ok this is really annoying me, but im currently using my old win 7 pc as a sort of file server and sharing it with my mac mini via SMB since my win7 PC has an assload more storage space.

but whats annoying is that the connection is VEERRRRRY slow. I cant even stream videos, movies and prawn from it because the transfer rate is slow.

i used the blackmagic disk test and got about 1MB/sec something doesnt seem right about this.

BTW i also did a quick search and saw that if i connect instead with "CIFS://" instead of "SMB://" it would rememdy it. nope.

I was reading that there is some issue about SMB2 vs SMB1

any clue on how to fix this?

Try playing with the channel of what the router is on. Macs get weird that way.

Use istumbler!

Make sure none of your wifi channel isn't conflicting with any other channels nearby. Use channel 1, 6 or 11. That's only for 2.4ghz.

Try testing with FTP. You can install filezilla server on the windows box pretty easily. Report back on if transfer is fast or slow.

If transfer is fast I would suggest that you ensure that your windows box and router has the latest drivers/firmware. I used to have weird problems like you describe but it went away. It was probably fixed by some update.

Also check some basic stuff like making sure that your Win7 PC is running its nic at 1Gb/Full duplex. Check the MTU also.

with my 2010 MBP, is it okay to keep it plugged in at all the time? Or I should occasionally unplug it and let the battery run down?

With any laptop, best to unplug and run down. Keeps battery "fresh" if you will. I had a HP, that was basically a desktop. Battery died, just the same from never unplugging.

...got myself the SSD and RAM upgrade... finally had it installed (by my wife... yeah, she's the geek in the house lol). So far, with browsing, it's quite noticeably fast! It'll be interesting to see how post processing photos will be with Lightroom

The best part about it is loading apps. For me at least it's almost instant on some.

Question about my new MBP.

It takes a few seconds longer (like 10-20) to shutdown than I would like.

I run teamviewer at start up and I think this may be causing the delay during shutdown. Any way to speed up the shutdown time?

Warren, previously you said to get a good case for the MBP, so I got one of those plastic shells with the piece that clips on the top and the second piece for the bottom.

It drives me crazy. It sticks up above the edge of the front of the laptop body and when I type it digs into my wrists.

Do you have any suggestions for a decent one?

Macbook has carbon fiber skin full body, with a Moshi screen protector the case is from Thule and on the bottom is a neat kickstand from - Click the links in my text for info.

The Iphone 6 plus has a carbon fiber skin and a clear full case - looks great and the Ipad mini has an origami carbon fiber case as well.

I have carbon fiber as the wallpaper for all three devices and they look very good and protects well.

Technology should be beautiful.

I knew I would get what I paid for for $16...

Apparently the Speck hard shells have their two attachment points for the front bottom piece on the sides so that the entire front edge is lower than the MBP itself... $50 for a Speck or a skin...

So, the GF's Mac is giving her a ton of issues lately. I think its mostly because she's running an old version of OSX and can't update Firefox to a remotely current version. Chrome isn't an option either. I think it's an Early 2008 Intel C2D 2.4 Macbook. Currently she's running OSX 10.5.8.

Please correct this if I'm wrong, but I read somewhere that 10.7.5 is the highest version of OSX that I can install on that particular machine. Really wish I could remember where I read that. Anyway, I'd like to update her to the latest version possible. What's the upgrade path from 10.5.8? Do I have to install an interim version (10.6.x) or can you just jump straight to whatever the latest supported version is? I'd prefer to jump to whatever the latest version is as it seems Apple charges for each upgrade. Its also important that she not lose anything in the upgrade process. She has a lot of job related stuff on there that it would be next to impossible to replicate. I'm going to try to scrape together an external hard drive for her to back everything up on before we do anything, but if we can avoid losing anything in the first place, that would be preferable.

I know she should just get a new one and move on, but in reality she doesn't need it. She really doesn't do anything with this one other than surf the web, use iTunes to put stuff on her iPod and use MS Office.

Since it's Intel you can certainly upgrade. How far depends. If it's a "Late" 2008 with 2+GB or ram Mavericks is possible.

You'll first need to upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6.x) to get the app store app. Then you can use the app store to upgrade to Mavericks.

Edit: I should read everything first eh? Snow Leopard -> app store -> Lion. You are correct.

Edit 2: And as usual, loading those things up with memory and a SSD can make a HUGE difference and add years onto it's useful life. I'm talking $150 or less.

Litesout, depending on how much "stuff" she has, you can just find a cloud storage service like Google drive or dropbox to upload it to for backup purposes. Negates the need for an external hdd if you have less than 3-5GB (Dropbox) or 15GB (GoogleDrive) of actual data.

Stogie, I had completely forgotten about cloud storage. I've got Dropbox set up on it already. We used to use that before I got Plex set up. Heck, she could probably get it all backed up onto a flash drive for that matter. I don't think its that much.

How does the upgrade to Snow Leopard work? Do you have to burn it to disk and install it that way or is it just a .dmg that I can mount and install directly? I'm assuming future updates will install through the app store. Also, will she need to track down any licenses for Office or any other installed software before we do this?
