Just a heads up guys, if you have this adapter [or as he says, ANY adapter] it will not charge in our cars while playing.

Everything else seemed to work just fine.

Oh and i only waited for 2 hours on release day. Had to kill time before our movie started since we missed the showtime by 5 minutes >=[ anyways. Worked out nicely.

I hate apple with a passion, but its the best phone i've ever owned, and i've had just about every top of the line PDA phone since they were invented.

Can't hate on a good product even if you hate the company.

Well I REFUSE to pay any money at all to get my own rigntones on my phone, I'd cut my dick off before I did that! Anyways I found a free program that works, it's called techblogg.com ToneShop or just ToneShop either way as long as you keep the ringtone under 30 sec it's worked for me on my 3G.

look around on the net, you can get ringtones free. I got my phone on 7/12 in less than 2 hours.
So far I love it, does everything I want. Only issue for me is battery life.

Everyone at Giz has continued to test hardware and software in the <a class="autolink" rel="nofollow" title="Click here to read more posts tagged IPHONE 3G" href="http://gizmodo.com/tag/iphone-3g/">iPhone 3G</a> over the last week and we've updated our <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5024882/iphone-3g-reviews-hardware-software-and-apps">reviews</a> with the following nuggets:<br>
• <strong>Speaker Buzz:</strong> We've finally confirmed that the dreaded buzz you got with speakers and tape adapters too close to the iPhone with the GSM connection running during calls or data disappears when you're running 3G. (Thanks Damien for helping with testing.)<br>

• <strong>Battery Life:</strong> <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5025309/round-up-nine-iphone-3g-battery-life-test-results">gets murdered by 3G and 3D gaming.</a> Here are <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5026473/extending-the-life-of-your-iphone-3g-with-battery-packs">hardware</a> and <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5025150/how-to-maximize-your-iphone-3gs-questionably-adequate-battery-life">software</a> fixes.</p>
<p><strong>Software:</strong></p>

<p>• Safari has <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5025614/iphone-20-tips-firmware-20-has-a-new-url-trick">a new function</a> that automatically types .net and .org domain suffixes.<br>
• Safari also shows <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5025632/iphone-20-tips-safari-shows-embedded-youtube-clips">embedded YouTube videos</a> on webpages as stills that link to the YouTube app.<br>
• A lot of the apps aren't incredibly stable. Developers only had a couple months of play time with the platform, so stuff isn't nearly as stable as it could be. Most of the time when an app crashes it won't take down the system, but we've had our share of having to hold down the power and home buttons simultaneously to hard reboot.<br>
• Apple hadn't really allowed developers to chat with each other because of the NDA, so they couldn't share notes on how to do this function or that function in a smart way. So, the quality of apps will go up starting now.<br>
• Only about 20% of the apps are good. I'm not sure what people were expecting from the iPhone App Store, but like any open or semi-open development platform, there's going to be a lot of garbage apps that either aren't well made or are so niche that only a handful of people would use them. This is like that.<br>
• Because Apple has to hand-review every update to the App Store, it takes forever for developers to patch their software. Many apps like NetNewsWire have a handful of point-releases that fix bugs already done, but are waiting on Apple to approve them.<br>

• The "backup" portion of a sync takes a really long time if you've just made any changes to your applications. iTunes is taking a snapshot of your phone for restoring purposes (you get all your apps back when you do a restore). So keep that in mind if you want to do a really quick sync and get out the door.</p>

I've had this phone for a week now and I've logged quite few hours on this thing and I've got some peeves that are bothering me.

1. Stability - everything crashes, even notes. Really? This thing has been on the market for over a year you can't make a note writing program that doesn't crash. Safari still crashes, I had it crash 5 times on me tonight while just on AZ! Really annoying while writing out a post and then it crashes out of nowhere and you lose everything. Also I've had everything slow down on me to a crawl especially the keyboard it becomes basically impossible to type on and it won't be fixed unless you hold down the home and power/sleep button and do a force reboot.

2. safari - I love the full HTML browsing and zooming and whatnot, it's great but two other things annoy me. One, how the F do I add bookmarks to this thing? Am I missing this or is this feature really not available? I must add a favorite in Vista IE then sync to the iPhone to make one for safari, seriously? Why is there no support for Firefox it's literally about a 100x more popular than Safari is on Windows and yet you don't support that? Also what is the deal with when you have multiple pages open and when you switch to another page that has already loaded it then proceeds to refresh even though you didn't hit the refresh button. This means you have to wait for the page that had already loaded and was ready to view to reload again! What's even worse is that if you're in the middle of writing a post on AZ or filling out a form and decide to go to another page to view something and then come back to your post it will reload the page when you get back which will wipe out the post you were in the middle of writing which means you have to start all over again. I learned that a couple times tonight man was I pissed. If Safari wasn't crashing on me it was wiping out my posts.

3. copy and paste - I knew this going into it but damn do you miss it when it's gone. Probably about twice a day do I come across the need to copy and paste and it makes it alot more work when you don't have it I've even had to resort to pen and paper to write down a long web address so that could put it in the web browser. Another example, when I imported my contacts from my old SIM card it imported them last name first so I had to switch it around for around 100 contacts not having C&P made the job take way longer than it should've.

4. doesn't support hotmail or MMS - I knew both of these going into it but yeah they kinda suck. I took a pic of my friend on my phone and I said to her what's your email I'll send it to you, "she says email!? Just send it to me in a picture message" to which I reply ma'am this is the iPhone it doesn't do picture messages! Should've seen the look on her face. IDK who's to blame for no hotmail support but probably Microsoft, but it sucks cause I've had this email for 9 years and I'm not switching to another because of a phone.

5. GPS - I love the GPS but one problem is that google maps doesn't follow your location. For example if you locate yourself in maps via GPS the little blue dot follows you around but the map doesn't you have to manually scroll the map so that it will keep up with you if you don't once you reach the edge of the map the blue dot will keep going but the map won't it'll just sit there.

6. Exchange support erases other email, calendar setting from other providers. Meaning if you want exchange support you can't have a yahoo! or Gmail on your iPhone also it will overwrite them it's either one or the other! UNLESS you give Apple $100 a year for a MobileME account then you can have Exchange and MobileMe at the same time but not Exchange and Yahoo!. Seems like total bullshit to me! I'm not giving Apple an $100 a year. I'd really like to work with my Exchange server since I'm a learning student but not at the loss of my Gmail account or at the expense of a MobileMe account.

7 - Forwarding text messages. I can't seem to figure this out either and this is gonna be the death of me!!! Someones going to send me one of those chain texts and if I don't forward it on to 10 people in 5 minutes someone I love is going to die!!! Thanks iPhone!! I'll be seeing you in court Steve!

Luckily all of these things can be fixed with software updates and I'd expect stability to be improved shortly and then soon after that C&P hopefully will come but Apple says it's not high on their list of features to add. That's cause adding C&P won't increase sales but making some new like wiggling icons will! Other than these things I'm liking the iPhone its just when I run into these problems does it piss me off and unfortunately that can be a few times a day. The iPhone reminds me of that 18 year old asking if he has potential and the answer is yes you do just fix this basic shit that should've been fixed before you launched the damn thing and you'll be awesome!

I'm pretty sure Hotmail does not support POP/IMAP anymore.

I've heard firmware 2.0 has had issues, my 1g on firmware 1.1.4 is solid as a rock.

I'm actually pissed I can't get Hotmail on it...Flame if you want, but its my primary e-mail (I have the plus account at $19.95 a year. And no, stop right there, all the searching that say you can get Hotmail if you have the plus account with popmail are wrong. For whatever reason, pop doesn't work with Ipod).

I don't have the pay version and I have outlook support and 2gb of storage. I think you can attach bigger files though.

I've done some research and it seems Ms has cancelled support for POP and WebDAV access for hotmail accounts. They've switched to some new proprietary tech called delta synch. But I know my friend gets her hotmail on her blackberry pearl so IDK why it can't work on the iPhone.

If your shit is crashing heavily then reboot.

I have no more prgrams unexpectedly quit on me with 2.0 than before....and that is once in a blue moon, much like any computer.

Nope I'm pretty sure hotmail won't do auto forwarding either. and I find the spam is brutal there, it's gotten much better but it's still bad. I don't know how many time's I've added X3 Church to my spam list but it keeps getting through.

Whiskers are you able to log in to hotmail.com via safari with your iTouch? I can't even do that with my phone! I get to the main page and sign in and then I go through an endless cycle of safari trying to load these webpages. It switches from one page to the 2nd to the 3rd and then back to the 1st page over and over again. So hotmail is completely inoperable for me on the iPhone but it works fine in Vista via IE, FF or outlook!

Also I have another peeve and that is PDF viewing. A couple days ago I had to replace a laptop display for this girl I know since it was shattered. So what I did was download the 254 page PDF service manual for her laptop and emailed it to myself so I could view it on the iPhone as I was working on the display. This all worked fine except two problems. The table of contents for the manual when viewed in Vista acts as links to their respective pages. So in vista I had to get to section 5.12 I just click it and it takes me to that page but not in the iPhone the links don't work. So I had to scroll through a 254 page document one page at a time so that I could get to where I needed to be which happened to be pg 115. There's no option to type in a page # or click a button to get to the next page etc every page has to be scrolled one at a time!! Needless to say it took me a while to get there. Then once I got there I accidently hit the menubar at the top of the iPhone screen which immediately took back to the 1st page of the PDF which means I had to scroll all 115pages all over again! I like the idea of tapping the menu bar taking you back to the top for safari but not so much for PDFs. How often in a PDF must you go back to the 1st page and start over. I wouldn't have minded it so much if I could type in a page # or if the links in the ToC actually worked like they did in Vista.

I will say that I was viewing a Word document and the links in that document worked fine but not for the PDFs.

:ibsarlacc:
1. I've only had one app crash and i've owned this phone since day one, used it non stop. It was a third party app BTW.

2. RTFM, its right in there - Bookmarks.. see that massive PLUS sign at the bottom of safari? Try pushing it genius. Also, never had safari crash at all. Had 3G hang for a few then work again, but safari seems rock solid to me.

3. You knew this going in //delete

4. You knew this going in //delete

5. Mine works just fine and follows me no problem. User error again i'd assume.

6. No idea about that since i only use my comcast, and gmail account, but both work fine together. Sounds like the first legitimate complaint you've had yet possibly.

7. If you partake in forwarded text messages you deserve to be shot anyways. Sure, charge people money to send them stupid pointless things. Not everyone has unlimited texts you know.

MY complaints are actually good IMO:

- No flash support
- Have had the keyboard lag tremendously twice now while typing a text message. Rebooting the phone fixes this but the lag does not seem to pass on its own.
- Auto adjusting brightness does not seem to work right.
- Emails will stop being pushed to the phone, even if i open the email and wait for it to check. If i reboot the phone it will then pick up like 19 emails all at once like they were stuck somewhere. Sounds software related to me.

Other than that.. it wasnt free so let me whine like a child about that i guess.

He listed issues he is having with the phone. You come across like quite an ass when you reply as you did. How about simply point out the issues you have, and maybe why you disagree with him on certain points rather then just get nasty. Makes you look like the fucktard, not him.

I would not expect the situation with PDF viewing to improve any time soon. If you haven't kept up with the news, the business relationship between Adobe and Apple is actually pretty pissy right now. I wouldn't expect a full Adobe Reader for the iPhone any time before you see Flash on the iPhone. If I had to bet, I'd say that the licensing Apple currently has with Adobe for PDF on the iPhone either directly prohibits development of full Reader-like functionality or would require more internal development work at Apple than they are willing to throw at it.

Congrats on having on a stable iPhone but I don't and neither do a lot of people. I have to do a reboot at least once if not twice a day, I did one a 3pm today cause the keyboard slowed to a crawl. That seems to be the problem I'm having most often. It gets to the point that each key press takes 2-3 second to register and it won't get better unless I restart.

2. OH so it isn't in the bookmarks page, thanks!

5. So you're telling me that the blue dot AND the map follows you around! Cause I only get the blue icon following me around I have to manually scroll the map so that it will keep up with me but the blue dot has no problem doin it. I think you're full of it like you are about the bookmarks.
7. It was a joke re re but I do occasionally forward messages to friends but not those dumbs ones that get forwarded to me. If one friend tells me something in a text and I feel others should know then I'll forward it along.

meh i was cranky, don't lose your skirt over it. Its the intarweb take it with a grain of salt.

If your iphone isn't stable, which obviously it isn't, and mine is, as well as millions of others, why wouldn't you have returned it yet for a new one? Mass manufacturing does occassionaly produce a piece of crap product.

Now.. the keyboard slowing to a crawl DOES suck, but is software for sure, so i feel you on that one, but its surely going to be fixed.

Bookmarks was real easy. I hate apple but i love safari. Works great.

blue dot AND map follow me around. Perhaps its not working for you due to the execution. I open maps, then click the GPS button and don't touch anything afterwards. IT is slow for the first few seconds, but eventually catches up just fine. Also, are you using hybrid display or just maps, satelite, etc.. its possible you are loading too much?

The frustration from forwarded text messages is simply due to when i didnt have an unlimited text plan [was out of contract and didn't want to sign a new one just for that] and my brother kept sending me stupid jokes at $.30 a piece. I couldn't stop them since i needed texts to occassionally talk to the wife at work and he wouldn't stop sending them. So IMO its wasting others money most of the time and totally un-needed. Chain emails also piss me off. But yes as you've just explained it, no forward, or copy and paste, etc do suck. Once again its kinda something i knew going in so i live with it. With 90% usability of other phones its better overall somehow still.

Lol re-re.. nice. Anytime someone says re-re i picture britney spears bald.. makes me laugh every time.

Seems as if I may have been right. Apple has released a beta build of firmware 2.1 which adds increased GPS functionality, Apple's push service and possibly COPY and PASTE!! This 2.1 is different than 2.0.1 which will be released first. 2.1 I'd expect to be released in September which is when Apple said they'd release their push notification service. So reliability first and then new features hopefully including C&P!!

<span id="ppt1266863">iPhone roundup: Apple seeds 2.1 with new GPS features, possible copy/paste</span></h2><p class="byline">by <strong><a href="/bloggers/ryan-block/">Ryan Block</a></strong>, posted Jul 25th 2008 at 8:57AM</p><div class="postbody"><div align="center"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/07/webkit-iphone-copy-paste.jpg" alt="" vspace="4" border="1" hspace="4"><br></div>
Your morning iPhone news fix: looks like Apple's seeded a beta of firmware 2.1 (not to be confused with the supposed 2.0.1 that will fix the myriad bugs and issues with 2.0), which may have some new GPS features that would imply turn-by-turn directions. No argument from us if Apple really is including new Core Location hooks for tracking your direction and speed, which would both be needed for doing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/14/apple-says-turn-by-turn-gps-coming-to-iphone-copy-paste-not-a/">proper GPS navigation</a>.<br><br>Another bit which may or may not make it into 2.1 is copy/paste. We're still both hopeful and skeptical, but supposedly in the new version of the WebKit framework exists commands for "plugins," "copy," "paste," "cut," and some others. We can't confirm if these really exist (and if they do, we don't know how they've actually been there, or if they're simply holdovers from the desktop WebKit frameworks), so don't hold your breath. Also supposedly making its first appearance in the 2.1 beta code: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/09/iphone-push-notification-service-for-devs-announced/">Apple's push notification service</a>.

so I got gps maps to follow my position today. Idk what I did different but it worked. It worked in map, satellite and hybrid with edge and 3g and even with showing traffic it still worked. So maybe it's an intermittent problem idk.

Anyone else have this problem? I deleted an app on my iPhone cause I didn't like it and the next time I synced my phone iTunes goes and installs the app back again. WTF kindof logic is that I thought there was 2 way sync with this thing. If I deleted it I obviously don't want it so why would you add it back?

I've noticed that if your typing a text message and the keyboard is slow to respond all you need to do is hit the home key, then go back to SMS and continue typing your message. It should go back to normal typing speed. No need to reset the phone.
