That issue is only with the Verizon Xoom and was one of the reasons why it got the External SD support so late (The European version can read and write and got the update way earlier.) The reason being, it was a developers tablet and Google made specifications as such because pure Android was not built to support External SD Cards in the first place (think Nexus lines). All the other manufacturers that have External SD support hack it onto the kernel to support it. With all of that said, I've had no problems with the ASUS Transformer and I certainly haven't read about the others with complaints like the Verizon Xoom. I have a 32 GB external on my tablet and another 16 GB on the dock plus the 16 GB internal. Everything mounts as a drive where you can read and write to it. The same thing happens if you use an external hard drive through the USB ports. It mounts as it should and you can read and write onto it without the need of a computer using the MTP protocol. If you want to write to an External SD on the Verizon Xoom without needing a computer you'll need root access.

What! You have an Asus Transformer and you can read AND write to the SD card? I just dealt with some guy that had the exact same tablet running 3.2.1 and when he tried to write files to the SD card it was greyed out

Then I read this:

Android 3.2: SD Card Support

Big picture stuff aside, one of the most noteworthy changes in Android 3.2 is the long overdue addition of SD card support. While some tablets -- the Asus Transformer and Toshiba Thrive, for example -- have supported external storage from the start, those instances have been the results of manufacturer-made software modifications. As Xoom owners know all too well, the pure Honeycomb OS has annoyingly lacked SD card functionality up until now.

Take note, though: With Android 3.2, SD card support means something slightly different than what it's meant in the past. Whereas Android smartphones treat SD cards like regular drives, with full read and write access, Android 3.2 tablets view external cards in a much less PC-like manner. In short, apps can read an SD card -- but they can't write to it.

The reason: Google has switched to a new protocol for SD card handling in the 3.2 release. The thinking seems to be that with the high amount of internal space provided on Honeycomb tablets, most users will be turning to SD cards for purposes like media storage as opposed to application and app data storage. With that mentality, writing data from a tablet to an external card becomes less important, and a simplified user experience -- one that's less dependent on a user's understanding of file system structure -- becomes a higher priority.

To be clear, you can still write to a mounted SD card via your PC, using a USB connection; you just can't do it from the tablet itself. That means in an Android file manager utility like Astro, you'll be able to browse through the SD card and access its files, but if you try to copy files to the SD card or edit any SD-card-stored files, you'll find those options to be grayed out and unavailable.

In my Android 3.2 testing, I did run into a handful of issues with certain apps being able to properly detect and read files on my SD card. Neither Photoshop Express nor PicSay, for example, saw any of the files on a card I inserted. A Google spokesperson tells me this is likely because the apps are using an API to detect only the first external storage source they can find -- which, in this case, comes up as the "sdcard" partition that actually resides on the Xoom's internal drive. The apps would apparently be better off using the Android MediaStore API, which would allow them to find all available media files on all storage present. Hopefully this is a kink developers will be able to work out sooner than later.

Weird. I do remember reading that article. But yeah, I've been reading and writing to my externals ever since 3.1 actually and I ran stock for a few days before they got kernel sources. I haven't seen anyone complain about it though that are running stock on XDA. Would be a big thread if there was. I know for sure the Verizon Xoom stock won't allow it. Do you know which File Explorer you were using? The Transformers come with one built in. I forget what its called cause I usually use Root Explorer but never had I ever had to force R/W onto my external. On my System partition sure but not on external. If its still a big issue, just root it. They have a One-Click root that you can install now for the Transformer. Very easy to use.

http://androidroot.mobi/2011/11/14/i...-razorclaw-v1/

Also if you read the comments in that article, you can see people claiming they can read and write to external.

SD Card Correction
You state "To be clear, you can still write to a mounted SD card via your PC, using a USB connection; you just can't do it from the tablet itself." On the Asus Transformer, you could (and still can) write to an SD card. I do move things from the main storage to the both cards, do card to card, etc. flawlessly.
I think the limitation to write to External is coming from which File Manager you're using.

One more note. Are you sure you went to the right directory for the external? The Transformer mounts the external in a directory called "Removable" at the root of the tablet. There you can access, read, write to the different externals. So to gain access to the external card you would have to navigate to ./Removable/MicroSD. I don't have the tablet in front of me as my girlfriend uses it as her daily but each corresponding external is given its own directory in that "Removable" folder. I know for sure its not called "External SD".

Probably the stock one. It was a case I was doing for Geek Squad. He tried to move his apps to the SD card and he couldn't do that either. I even whipped out my old iPhone 3G which is running Gingerbread ( Mind. Blown. Dat's right, I love da Androids, son!) and was trying to guide him through the setup and Honeycomb just didn't have the options that it had.

Yeah the stock File Manager is limited. I always remove that and replace it with another File Manager. At the bottom right next to the clock, you should see the External SD cards that are installed in the tablet/dock/USB drives and you can get direct access to them by clicking the corresponding "folder" icon. That'll bring you to the correct directory for the externals. You should be able to move files in and out of there. What probably happened is that you guys navigated to the wrong external sd folder which can happen if that SD Card was used on another phone as a remnant folder. Another option would be to unmount the SD card and use a card reader but that's a hassle to do. From what I remember, the stock File Manager defaults to /sdcard/ directory. You have to move up one level to get to the /Removable/ directory.

ASUS Transformer Prime reviews are in:

Consensus seems to be best Android Tablet to date. Wonder how much better it gets with ICS. I'm sure those Sunspider benchmarks would be better with the Java improvements ICS brings amongst other things. That SIPS+ screen looks pretty btw.

The keyboard is actually pretty awesome on the regular Transformer. Don't forget that its not just a keyboard. It actually adds a USB port (2 on the original which work with any USB peripherals such as a mouse, external hard drive, 3G Dongle, USB to ethernet, USB gamepad controllers and should work with a USB Hub though I haven't tried it myself), an SD Card slot for more storage, acts as a dock to sit the tablet up straight and another 10 hours of battery life. I use the keyboard a lot on my regular Transformer with Splashtop HD to connect to my PC when I need it and its awesome. TeamViewer is also there and I sometimes use it to connect to fix relatives computers or whatever if I don't have my laptop at hand. Also, Android has a lot of productivity apps for Office, Powerpoint, PDF, etc. I haven't tried Cloud Printing yet but its there as well.

I'd consider picking up a 16GB for 399 if they offered it...

Yeah $499 is up there but it is the first of the Tegra 3 tablets. Acer is already working on a tablet with a higher resolution, 1920x1200 , and some others will be adding NFC support. I'm sure there will be a price drop by the time the next iPad comes out.

Damn not bad. I am liking my PlayBook I picked up though last week. I actually like the interface. Now I can't wait till I can load Android Apps on it. I just can't see spending so much on tablets. I now have two tablets and I have only spent $450 total.

Google Working On Nexus Tablet Of ‘Highest Quality’ To Compete With iPad

When Apple announced the iPad, I didn’t rush to get the device. Why would I want a larger, over-glorified iPhone? Yet here I am with an iPad 2 lying nearby. The truth is, I didn’t need the device, but playing with the gadget here and there made me want it. When the second model hit the shelves, I picked one up.

Apple didn’t invent the tablet; they have been around for quite some time. Apple made them popular. Critics believed the device wouldn’t necessarily be a failure but predicted demand for it would be limited. Now most manufacturers are playing catch-up, competing in a market that Apple helped create. Unfortunately, none of them have been as successful.

The HP TouchPad was a train wreck. After disappointing sales, the device only become popular after HP discontinued then listed it on sale for the low price of $99. The BlackBerry PlayBook fared no better. Recently, RIM was forced to write off nearly a half-billion dollars in unsold PlayBook tablets.

Google Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt, believes he will have better luck. In an interview with the Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sea, he hinted to an official Nexus tablet to be released within six months. He praised Steve Jobs, calling him the “Michelangelo of our time,” but was quick to say that Apple and Google are in a brutal competition.

Google has had some experience with the tablet development process. Earlier this year, the search giant and Motorola joined efforts to create the Xoom, the first tablet to use Google’s Honeycomb OS. Unfortunately, critics found many drawbacks including a lackluster performance.

Since Google is well on its way in acquiring Motorola, the new tablet may offer a bigger bang for your buck. Google will have more control in the entire development process. Before, it was limited to just creating the operating system the device runs.

Schmidt didn’t offer many details but an official Nexus tablet will most likely run Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Android. He did confirm voice recognition support as one of the device’s features. You can currently use your voice to search on the Google Chrome browser. Something similar on a tablet will compete head-to-head with Apple’s Siri. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as more information is discovered.

I think there's some validity to that. Much more than the Atlanta Braves suing Disney because they are naming their next movie "Brave" and it's not even about baseball.

Best buy has officially killed off the HTC flyer It's still great tablet, but it was a pain in the ass to order the USA Tmobile version(but still worth it). Another great tablet has fallen due to the dual core/quad core craze.

Nah, that tablet failed all on its own with its initial price point and HTC's lack of effort on it.

Don't have one yet but will get one at some point. Not sure if I want to wait for the upgraded prime or pay the price for it either. I like the higher screen size however I am not sure it will be worth the performance hit it might cause due to have to render the larger images. Not to mention it probably won't be out till beginning or end of the summer.

So I "Samsunged" my ASUS Transformer yesterday:

Its a full port of TouchWiz Honeycomb onto the Transformer. Cameras and sensors aren't working but everything else is. I have to say, TouchWiz works quite well with Honeycomb and I can see why people like having it on the Tabs. The mini apps are really useful and functional. If they can fix the rest of the bugs on the port, I could actually see myself using it as a daily.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1447836

I also got around to installing Ice Cream Sandwich on my Transformer and it felt faster. I'm actually thinking of flashing back to the ICS port even though a lot of things aren't working yet. I'm hoping ASUS drops their build soon so the devs can start tweaking a proper ICS port. Can't wait for that to come.

Yes! Onskreen has become open sourced!
