Soccer players show signs of brain shrinkage

Small study suggests sport carries risk of long-term brain injury

Small sample, but still...

College-age soccer players may show some degree of brain-tissue shrinkage, a small study has found — adding to evidence that the sport carries a risk of long-term brain injury.

Using high-resolution MRI brain scans, researchers found evidence of reduced gray matter in the brains of 10 male college soccer players, compared with 10 young men who had never played the sport.

Gray matter refers to the brain tissue that controls thinking and memory. The significance of the relatively smaller gray matter volume and density seen in these players is not yet clear, the researchers say.....

On the other side of the world, my native Iraq has made shockwaves!

AFC Asian Cup Semi-Finals:

Iraq 0 (4-3 PK)
Korea 0

Will play either KSA or Japan, while Korea gets the loser in the 3rd place game.

Two suicide car bombings struck soccer fans in Baghdad as they were celebrating Iraq's victory in the Asian Cup semifinal today, killing at least 50 people and wounding more than 100.

Jesus Christ. And I was hoping this would put a cease to the fighting at least until Sunday, the day of the final.

Also, it's going to be Saudi Arabia heavily favoured vs. Iraq, a team which has defeated both Australia and S. Korea in this tournament despite the biggest setback in the current political state of the world.

we were wondering why henry's transfer fee was so low?

from news of the world:

THIERRY HENRY has walked out on his wife and two-year-old daughter, the News of the World can reveal.

The superstar footballer left devastated missus Claire after four years of marriage.

It explains why Henry was pictured in Paris last week, alone and not wearing his wedding ring.

The split came after he and 27-year-old Claire rowed over text messages and pictures on his mobile phone.

She and the former Arsenal skipper, who completed a £16million move to Barcelona on June 25, had a furious bust-up which led to Henry leaving.

A friend of the couple said: "Claire is devastated. It was almost as if Thierry wanted it to happen.

"He blatantly left his phone lying around the house and one day Claire picked it up out of curiosity.

"She started flicking through his text messages.

"There were also some pictures on the phone.

"As soon as Thierry came in Claire spoke to him and they had a full-scale row.

"Thierry told Claire that he was leaving and appeared to have a couldn't-care-less attitude. He just walked out and that was that."

Frightened

The friend said Henry—who starred with Claire in the famous Va Va Voom Renault car telly ads—marched out of their mansion in posh Hampstead, north London, two weeks ago and has not returned since.

The pal added: "He has not been back to see Claire or their daughter Tea since.

"He did call her three days after leaving and asked her if she was okay. Well how could she be okay? Of course she wasn't. He has not called her or seen her since.

"He has not been acting at all like his saintly image. Claire may have no choice but to consult solicitors about a divorce. She knows Thierry has been going out and that people have noticed he has removed his wedding ring."

Henry, 29, is spending most of his time in Barcelona, where he is earning £128,000 a week.

The friend added: "Claire dared not leave the house for the first two weeks because she was so upset and was hoping that Thierry would come back."

The friend also revealed the state of the marriage was one of the reasons the Arsenal legend decided to leave the club.

The pal explained: "It is definitely part of the reason Thierry is going to Barcelona. It is not all about football.

"The fact his marriage has gone Va Va Boom played a part in his decision to leave London." Friends noticed that Henry no longer seemed happy in his wife's company at the French Open tennis championship last month.

The pair arrived together at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris and, although Claire seemed happy, her husband looked bored and glum.

It was one of the last occasions the couple were seen in public together.

A few days after their split Henry travelled to Paris for the wedding of Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria and multi-millionaire basketball player Tony Parker.

Henry had travelled alone and was not wearing his wedding band for the star-studded bash at the city's ultra-plush Park Hyatt hotel.

The French striker was already secretly dating Claire—then known under her model name Nicole Merry—when he requested she be given the role as his co-star in the Va Va Voom telly ads for the Renault Clio.

The couple soon became inseparable, and married in July 2003 in a £40,000 bash at Highclere Castle, Berks. The bride walked down a 100-metre aisle festooned with white lilies in front of 200 guests.

The break-up of the marriage is the first real low point in what has been an idyllic life since Henry arrived at Arsenal in August 1999.

Henry, who rose from a childhood in a tough Paris suburb to become part of the French World Cup winning squad the previous year, was languishing as an underrated winger at Juventus when Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger bought him.

The star has taken pains to develope an image as a gentleman player who has not used his fame to cash in as a ladies' man.

At the time of his signing he told how he missed his then girlfriend Sabrina, who continued to live in Monaco with the couple's cats. He went on to date pop singer Jae Jefferson before splitting with her in 2000 and enjoyed a brief fling with stunning nightclub hostess Alexandra Slater.

Claire's friend added: "She just cannot believe that Thierry could just throw away four years of marriage like that. Their little girl is only two years old and has no idea what is going on or where her papa is.

"Claire is doing her best to cope but she is really struggling at the moment."

SOCCER ace Thierry Henry has told pals he quit Arsenal for Barcelona to get away from “everything English — including my wife”.

Henry, 29, walked out on Croydon-born model Claire, 27, days after joining the Spanish giants last month. The pair, who have a two-year-old girl, will divorce, The Sun can reveal.

And Henry is living the single life following his move to Barcelona — and his bitter marriage break-up.

Pals say he has been lapping up the wild bachelor lifestyle — partying and visiting casinos every night on a recent five-day trip to Paris.

The ex-Arsenal captain was pictured cuddling up to two girls at a concert by rapper 50 Cent in the French capital last week. There was no sign of his wedding ring as he attended the marriage in the city of Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria and basketball’s Tony Parker.

Last night Henry, 29, confirmed his four-year marriage to English model Claire — mum to his two-year-old daughter Téa — is over.

A statement through his lawyers said: “Thierry is extremely saddened by the breakdown of his marriage.

“He is anxious to move on with his life and maintain the best possible relationship he can with Claire for the benefit of their daughter Téa, whom he loves very much.”

The statement added that the star’s move to Barcelona was “entirely for footballing reasons”. But, in a break with tradition in such matters, it did NOT state that no one else was involved in the break-up.

Celebrities are usually keen to stress that the split was not caused by adultery.

Earlier Henry told pals he quit London club Arsenal for Spanish giants Barca to get away from “everything English — including my wife”.

He walked out on Claire, 27, and Téa just days after the move last month. It followed a series of rows and he has not been back since.

Henry, whose lightning feet shot him to fame as the Gunners’ all-time leading goal- scorer, told chums: “I didn’t really want to leave Arsenal — they’re my favourite club and I loved playing for them.

“But lots of things have changed recently and I had to get away from everything English, including my wife unfortunately.

“It’s a very sad time for all of us, but you’ve got to know when to move on.”

The France international spoke at Eva’s wedding, where he arrived without Claire — also known by her modelling name of Nicole Merry, and who starred with him in his famed Va Va Voom TV car ads.

Henry stayed alone in a Paris hotel for five days and was spotted out partying and visiting casinos every night.

His pal said: “Thierry was acting like a single man, letting his hair down with the boys. Everyone realised something must be wrong.

“There was no sign of Nicole — even though she was a great friend of both Eva and Tony. It was late at night when he told us about wanting to leave England for personal reasons.

“We were all very sad because we love Thierry and Nicole. They were a wonderful couple.” The last straw between the pair is said to have been secret texts and pictures found by Claire on the footballer’s mobile phone.

But they are only part of the problem and the striker’s gallic temperament is believed to have triggered the split.

Another friend of the couple revealed: “Thierry is very opinionated, headstrong and very much his own man.

“He would probably admit himself that he can be a nightmare to live with.

“He may have walked out, but Claire wasn’t running after him pleading with him to come back. A divorce is inevitable. It’s just a tragedy that a child is involved.” It is also understood that while Henry was keen to leave England for Spain, Croydon-born Claire preferred to remain close to her family.

Henry stormed out of the luxury family spread in Hampstead, North London, two weeks ago. He is spending most of his time around Barcelona, where he is set to pocket £128,000 a week.

One of the couple’s last public appearances together was at the French Open tennis championship last month.

But while Claire looked delighted to be there, sports fan Henry looked out of sorts. He and Claire had been dating in secret when he asked for her to be hired as his co- star in the Renault Clio ads.

They tied the knot in July 2003 at Highclere Castle, Berks, in a £40,000 extravaganza in front of 200 guests.

Henry comes from a broken home. Mum Maryles is divorced from his dad Antoine.

Darren Dein — Henry’s adviser and best man at his wedding — said last night: “To be honest, we don’t really comment on these things.”

Kid looks amazing in the video. But Man U is downplaying it. Apparently they recruit like 50 kids like this every year. Its just that this time there is a video

you are correct.

there are probably kids like him all over the world. i've seen videos of kids playing soccer in the streets and beaches in brazil, and it's amazing to see how good they are.

but yea, i think this just stands out even more because:

1. there is a video now
2. he's british....we all know that the british players aren't the most technical and don't play with a lot of flair
3. he's playing against a bunch of kids that are probably clueless.

but it'll be interesting to see how he does when he plays against kids older than him.

in the meantime, it looks like the tevez signing WILL happen today. and i guess he'll get the #8 jersey since wazza has the #10 shirt.

Oh come on now, that's a low blow. As if AS Roma wasn't good enough last year.

Didn't you see the fantastic 7-1 loss to Manchester in the Champion's League? Inter had some great competition...

Even without a point deduction, Milan would still be 21 points behind Inter. Not to mention Inter taking both derbies.

f'n inter haha. hopefully they meet each other in the champs league this year... although i have a gut feeling man utd will be playing barca.

serie a will be interesting this year with juve back and milan without points deduction and feeling cocky after winning the champs league.

also i'm def looking forward to premiership start because i think liverpool will offer some good competition this year with their much improved squad to help them weather multiple competitions, as well as arsenal (wait, but they have no henry, are you serious? case in point: man utd lost targetman van nistelrooy and they spread the goal scoring around, allowing their attack to free flow... i think arsenal actually benefits from this some, not to the extent man utd did though. van persie will have a great season i feel).

anyways, tottenham will push for their usual 5th but offer stiffer competition than usual this year, then of course man utd and chelsea as well. i also think there will be some surprises and interesting stories to follow: man city with new manager and squad really, i say they're top 8 or bottom 5, no in between ha. newcastle with sammy at the helm and some decent signings this summer, but not sold on them quite yet.

as you can tell, i'm getting quite excited. community shield in a day aaaand finally get to see tevez in a united shirt on wednesday (speaking of shirts, the black man utd away shirt is SICK i love it, especially the red stripe down the back). anybody started picking up the new jerseys for their team yet? where's that chelsea fan, is he buying the neon yellow shirt? haha

missed the community shield, but i'm getting amped too.

and the black man.utd jersey is very but i dunno if i'll be getting it. i bought last season's home jersey with giggs 11 printing and the white away jersey with giggs 11 in champions league lettering.

i'll have to think about it. but if i do get one, it'll be the away shirt. don't really like the new home. i want my next man.utd jersey to have g.neville 2.

Are they going to replay the Community Shield? I forgot to tape it yesterday.

I've bought every home Inter jersey for the last 10 years. I'll definitely get the new one, as well as the special away jersey for this year. I just don't understand why Nike doesn't include the scudetto on the jerseys sold in the US, which means I'm going to have to buy it off some website in Europe, which really sux with the current exchange rate.

the inter jerseys are always class. the new away kit is

http://www.onionbag.com/detail.aspx?ID=2384

looks like onionbag has the away with the scudetto. they have the home too but the scudetto's not in the pic. you can try emailing them and see if you can add it for an additional cost. they're pretty friendly and prompt with replying back.

or you can try www.subside.us.com and see when they'll get the 07/08 inter jerseys. in the past, you can pay extra and get the scudetto.

Thanks for the tip guys. Onionbag is only 6 minutes from where I live! Never even heard about this store before. Now I can save on shipping, too.

i've had very good experiences with onionbag. i'd definitely recommend them. i believe they have a sister company now with sporting-id.us and are able to provide authentic name and numbering for pretty much any team. i've even been able to mail jerseys to them to get them printed.

subside's great because they have pretty much everything you could want, and they have a great collection of older jerseys. ever since they launched their us site, a lot of their shirts have been a little cheaper - something about non eu's not having to pay a certain tax. but it's still shipped from england so it'll take 1-2 weeks for delivery.

i've bought from soccer.com who do authentic lettering as long as you choose the "hero" option instead of "dress like the pros," which is just block lettering. i feel bad for those that didn't know the difference and wasted their jerseys with just the standard block lettering.

soccerplus is a good site too. they have a huge inventory. but my last two experiences have been horrible and will not buy from him again.

I just looked up some clips of this guy and he can really move between defenders. We need a Robbie Fowler esque player that can work his way past defenders without relying on the infamous Liverpool Long Ball (looks at Crouch) .
Damn those Ukrainians are good
