Boxing: News and Discussion Thread

Took much longer than I thought. Tyson lost pretty much after the 2nd round. He just wasnt aggressive enough throughout it all. Lewis played it smart and kept him either really close (hold) or far enough to poke him till he bled.
Tyson's only aggression only comes out at the start of each round for like a few seconds, but then he fades.
Even without a knockout, Lewis would have won by points by far.

what do you guys think?

hey he fought clean, took the beating like an out of shape man

i think in between rounds 5-6 maybe someone overheard him say
"I got nothing"

and still continued.

Lewis is a super heavyweight, out classed out matched Mike

Looked like Tyson quit after the 3rd or 4th nd round to me. Too much inactivity over the past few years...

Yeah, Tyson was getting pretty beat up for sure, but am I the only person in the world that saw Lewis PUSH Tyson to the floor on the "knockout"??

Even though he was definitely hurt, Tyson may not have hit the canvas if Lewis didn't lean on his back and push him down.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a protest from the Tyson camp about that. Plus, it would help set up a rematch$$$$

Tyson didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of beating Lewis. This was very obvious after round 2. But Tyson seems only the shadow of his former self. Where is the raging bull? Where is the homocidal maniac we have come to expect of Mike Tyson? Didn't he seem a little too humble and serene before his fight with Lewis? Oh well...he made a ton of money and hopefully, he learns to spend wisely in his retirement cause his career is definitely over.

"Hey, smokey..... you got knocked the Fuck ouT!!!!"
It was all about a paycheck... Tyson is $15 Million dollars in debt, and the $20 M he got last night will keep some people from killing him. Did you hear him at the end? he said, 'Thanks for giving me a paycheck."

I didn't read in too much detail... but does anyone really believe that the "push" did anything??? Tyson has a strong chin, but he was going down from that punch.... directly on the chin, twisted his head about 30 degrees, and dried all the sweat from it too.... He was lucky he went down, b/c lewis was teeing of on his head for that entire round

Tyson was just trying to get paid.

He behaved himself... he wants to look like a pussy. Thats the only way he can get his licenses back in other states...

Once he gets his licenses back... he can pull off at least 2-3 more fights that will draw in crowds... and GET HIM PAID.

He didn't try at all... Tyson is in much better shape then he seemed to be during the bout... it looked as though he spent the entire time trying to behave himself.

I think he got frustrated over all the hugging & not being able to get inside early on... realized he couldnt win without a ton of effort... and just said... instead of getting mad and doing something dumb... imma just get PAID.

You will see him again... whether youll see him actually put up a good fight... i dunno... but youll see him in at least two more big name fights. $$$$$$$

When I see some use the term "hugging", I tend to discount their boxing opinions.

To me this pictures sums up for a shorter fighter like Tyson against Lewis:

If Tyso and Lewis both retire it will mark a new era (which would be welcome, IMO), with these guys:

David Tua
Chris Byrd
Wladimir Klitschko
Vitali Klitschko
Jameel McCline
Fres Oquendo
Kirk Johnson
Hasim Rahman
John Ruiz

The Klitschkos may do well depending on US exposure. Tua is still young but has a Tyson - esq style that will always lose against boxers like Byrd. McCline is an interesting prospect.

Heavyweight division is shot for now, let's focus more on the lower divisions, I know it will never happen as a Heavyweight titlefight is still a HUGE spectacle...just look how the Lewis Tyson Fight had top billing among this legendary sports weekend.

Super Welterweight (154): Fernando Vargas, Oscar de la Hoya, Winky Wright, Roman Karmazin and any one in Welterweight below that moves up.

Welterweight (147) with Vernon Forrest, Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga;

Superlightweight (140) with Kostya Tszyu, Zab Judah, Micky Ward, Arturo Gatti, and Ricky Hatton (Ward and Gatti are old, Tszyu, Judah and Hatton are the top);

Featherweight (126): Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Naseem Hamed, Johnny Tapia and maybe Manny Pacquiao if he moves up from below.

oh please pull_t

you dont know shit about my boxing opinions... and you havent demonstrated that you know jack shit but a bunch of names that most of us know just as well too.

lose the holier then thou attitude.

what is your problem with my opinion exactly? the fact I said lewis was "hugging" tyson? so now you want to fight over semantics? bssh please.

tyson got his ass beat... but lewis fought like a bitch like always. regardless of the style thou... he fought fair. so not much I can say more then what I already did... I dont think tyson was trying to fight. Sure, he threw a couple big punches... He was just hoping for a freebie.

So... now that you spit out all these names. Do you have a point?

That's what I disagreed with. To me it read like Tyson could have won, but he just wasn't trying.

Wasn't trying to insult, I should have put a wittle smiley at the end of my comment. , etc....

sheeeesh....

threw a few big punches hoping hed get lucky... but otherwise... didnt try at all.

why? I havent a clue. I'm just making a guess like everyone else...

lewis should retire after this. there's no one left for him to fight in this division that's worth his time, and to end your career w/ a KO of tyson is jus gravy. imo he's a good fighter, but it's really hard to measure him since his opponents haven't exactly been high caliber heavyweights like those of the past. actually, it's been that way for quite some time. even when tyson was champ.

tyson on the other hand, will be fighting for quite sometime. heh heh. he's so far into debt that he can't aford to retire. and really, like he said in the interview, he'll fight anyone/anything for the right price. jus a matter of time till they put him in the ring w/ a bear/lion/tiger/shark...whatever... i wouldnt mind watching that....hahahaha

That's a silly statement.

Lewis has proven that he's ALWAYS just one punch away from getting knocked out.

It's already happened to him TWICE. He has a glass chin. If he fought Tyson again tomorrow, I'd still give Tyson MORE than a chance to win. One good punch would do it.

That being said, ANY top ranked heavyweight can beat Lewis.

i'm not saying that he doesn't have a glass chin. hell, i was betting that tyson could connect one just one punch to test it out. fact is, lewis is 35-36 yrs old. if i were him, i wouldnt wait another 2-3 yrs just to wait and see if another top ranked heavyweight contender will test out my chin. there's no bigger name in boxing right now than tyson. he brings in the $$$. for lewis to risk his title/legacy/reputation on the line for some nobody w/ a lesser reputation than tyson makes no sense at all. the payout would be smaller, the draw would be smaller, and the downside/risk outweighs any upside that would benefit his reputation as a heavyweight.

How was it a silly statement? Everything you state here is exactly why Lewis should retire. Every fighter is but one punch away from being knocked out...obviously...

He's beaten all the quality fighters in his era and now has beaten the monkey on his back, that he hadn't fought Tyson.
