Thanks.
Yeah, I've had the itch for a while now as well. Looking into both the '03 E39 M5 & '06 E46 M3... Lurking the forums educating myself as to the pros & cons of owning one. As of right now, I'm leaning towards the E39.
The CL is an AWESOME car and will definitely be missed.

kept up and started to walk on one of those 05 and up m5 with the v10, 7 speed, it had exhaust and a few other mods, they nice cars tho, I just hate the maintenance, for the money you would have put in it in say 2 years you could have built a nicer Japanese import and made it faster, well that's the way I look at it, some people are diehard BMW fans, I do love there stock stance tho, and you can only improve on that

Driven an E46 M3 also. It's a good car but probably wouldn't feel any faster than your blown CL. One of the vrtues of the E39 M5 is the instant torque it has over such a wide spread of rpm. The M3 doesn't have that.

I've been living over at m5b for weeks now lol
As for maintenance, I'm covered... So.FL Motorsports FTMFW!
My co-worker has an '06 e46 and it doesn't feel at all quicker than the CL, just more refined. After sitting shot gun at an auto-x event, it accels where the CL does not. Period.
I test drove a mint condition '03 e39 last week.... couldn't wipe the grin off of my face. 11 yr old car still managed to turn me on..... true story . Owner was super cool, but wanted entirely way too much for it... Still working that deal.
After driving the M5, you're absolutely right... it's a completely different animal.
With power comes responsibility; respect the throttle and she'll respect you in return. Cliche statement, but oh so true!

Yeah too true about the 11 year old car that can still run well with the modern stuff. The E39 M5 is so easy to drive. You forget about having to keep the motor in the V-tec to make it move LOL like on most Honda's. I noticed with the BMW over the Acura & Honda cars, that BMW feels so much more solid & planted in a high speed bumpy corner.
See if you can find one that you know has recently had all the sensors replaced, like O2's, all 4 cam pos sensors and both MAF's. I did all this to mine, improved the mid range torque a lot. Made the difference between being able to drift a low speed 2nd gear turn at full throttle, can now do it at half throttle. Much more responsive on the top end too.
Another thing about the E39 M5, I've had so many near misses screwing around trying to drift when it was safe LOL. But the car is so controllable that as soon as it starts to get away from you and you back off, it goes right back where you want it.
Good luck with the E39 purchase and selling the CL. I kept a CL as a daily beater as I drive 70 miles a day to work. I'm looking to sell an E39 M5 but it will need work, but will be cheap, just an FYI if you want one that needs some TLC. I'm also selling the CL & a 6MT TL too, just to let you know if you want a daily beater.
