Car Buying Advice/Opinions Please

Hey guys (and gals),

I currently have a 2005 Acura RL as my daily driver. Mechanically it has no problems, will be paid off in the next 1.5 years or sooner, and still looks fairly new. In other words, nothing is wrong with it.

However...The new car itch has hit me and I have a feeling this may be the last time I buy something for a while (planning to have children in the next 3-4 years). I figured I’d come to you guys for some car ideas or options I may not have thought. Any and all help/feedback is appreciated!
With that said, I have a few routes I could take.

Option 1 I have debated on keeping the RL and buying a fun coupe. Requirements for the coupe are have a nice interior, RWD or AWD, and a V6 or V8. I have toyed with the idea of Camaro SS, or waiting for the new generation Mustang but those interiors do not really impress me.

Option 2 I really like the 09+ Audi A8L so I have debated on selling the RL and getting that. However, I would not want this to be my daily driver. If I go this route, I would buy a low priced, high mileage, fuel-efficient vehicle for my daily travels. I have thought about a 2004ish TSX or a 02-06 Audi A4 Avant (wagon)

Option 3 This option would have me selling the RL and getting a large bodied vehicle that also has a bit of power such as a new Dodge Charger RT AWD or something similar. This option is pretty impractical but figured I’d list it since it is an option nonetheless.

Option 4 Give me a suggestion.

Again, any and all help/feedback is appreciated!

Option 1. BR-Z, 370/350Z, or Genesis Coupe.

Option 2 is pretty far fetched as low-priced and the luxury you are expecting don't jive.

Do you want a car payment and a newborn at the same time?

If your RL will be paid off in the next 1.5 years, and you are going to start a family, it makes the most sense to keep it.

I had two car payments and 2 newborns...it can be done.

Keep the RL, save the money if you are gonna have kids right around the corner.

There are a lot better things you can do with that $$$.

Keep the RL ... You can get many, many miles out of it. It can stay your DD and fit kids in teh back. If you get rid of it for a coupe, that'll be gone the first minute your wife gets pregnant

Hi,

I have a '07 Legend (RL) and a S2000 AP1. Loads of fun (in both), fundamentally different, and yet zero problems of frustration and adaptability when switching either way. Hunting for a NA1/2 NSX, and would be a perfect combo for you (in my humble opinion).

If you don't mind me asking, what's your budget?

Everyone thank you for your opinions and suggestions. Very helpful in assisting me with my decision. I ultimately (at least for now) have decided on keeping the RL and buying a fun coupe for weekends and stuff without children (when I finally have them).

My fiance convinced me (didn't take much convincing) to scout a CPO 2010-2012 Audi S5 that fits my budget. So I've been researching all of the pros and cons of that car and Audi's in general.

First off are you seriously 16 years old with an S5????? If so, thats badass I'm looking to spend between $30-40K. At this point on a CPO 2010-2012 Audi S5 in Ibis White with Tuscan Brown leather. Prestige Plus model. Currently I seeing them for about $43K on average. So I'm thinking and hoping in a year to year and half's time, they will be in the $30-40K price.

Thanks! I love Honda's so the first car that came to mind for me was the NSX. I will probably look into those as well. but for nwo the Audi has my attention. I've loved Audi's since my grandfather had a late 80s Audi 5000. Pretty good car that lasted around 20 years.

I was going to put S5 on my list, but didn't realize you had that kind of budget.

As for the 16 year old with an S5, meh. Vancouver would put that level of spoiled to shame.

CTS-V Wagon would get my vote. I know they're a bit off on your price range but I would imagine that if you give it a bit more time, the price for a pre-owned one would be a little closer to what you're looking for.

Yes i am 16 and driving an S5. Mine is actually Ibis/Tuscan. My cars has an AWE exhaust and it is the most phenomenal sounding thing ever highly recommended if you buy a 5. I dont see why it would take any convincing. The B8 S5 with a stunning exterior/interior matched with a NA 4.2l V8 with a proper 6mt theres nothing better IMO. You could always go with an '08-'09 the only big differences are the tails and the MMI as well as drive select. The MMI is nothing special over the '08-9 just a few visual upgrades. Tails are 1000$ bucks. The drive select is nothing special IMO my Dad's '11 S5 Cab has it. Its only worth while for Auto's as well because if brings shift points in dynamic mode. Also i wouldn't recommend getting a auto in '08-'12 (Coupe only) because the Tiptronic transmission is not very good. Sluggish shifts, not responsive at all. But the '10-'12 cab has the S-Tronic DSG which they only put on the 3.0T.

I say keep the RL (like others have said), and set aside the money you would be spending on the sports car. In about a year or two, you will have a nice savings for emergencies, or a good down payment for what you want.

Plus, it will be your only car payment, as the RL will be paid off.

Yea with the RL paid off, a refinance on the house, and getting a substantial raise I set myself up pretty well for the future. It definitely took me ALOT of patience (was an intern for 5 years) but that tree is starting to bear fruit.

Never been to Vancouver but I can only imagine

I actually want a Wagon and after seeing Bob's CTS-V, it had my vote as well as an Audi S4 or S6 Avant. But the fiance has been fighting me hard on the wagon, it may take a few more years and some kids to sway her to that point.

Thanks man and beautiful color combo, certainly my favorite. I won't stop searching until I get a 09-12 Ibis White with Tuscan Brown or Magma Red interior with Tuscan being the favorite between the two. I have heard the AWE and it sounds pretty damn good. I like the Borla on it too. Especially since it comes with the downpipes.

Getting the 09 would save me money but I really want to upgrade the MMI to the MMI+ and for the 10-12 S5 that only requires one or two items while its a redo of the whole system on the 09 (at least thats what I've read). Also I'll want to get some EuroCode headlights so the tailights already being LEDs is a plus. However, if getting the 09' over a 10' would save me a great deal of money I will just have to suck it up.

I'm probably going to have to find one with ADS too because my fiance doesn't know how to drive a manual. I loved my manual Accord (and manuals in general) but I know she'll want to drive the car sometimes too.

You've given me something to think about with the auto though because that's not the first time I've heard that. I will have to test drive both and if the manual blows me away I may just have to tell my fiance she'll need to learn (I've offered this a million times)or just not drive the car I appreciate the words
