Infiniti: Q70 news

Replacement for the Infiniti M-series.

Apparently the next gen Q70 is to be a boosted 3.0L V6 @ 550HP...

From here: http://pricinginsider.carsdirect.com/tag/infiniti-q60/

Quote:
Since the brand’s start in 1989 with the Q45 luxury sedan, Infiniti has used a letter designation for each of its model lines, followed by a two-digit number representing the vehicle’s engine displacement. Starting next year for the 2014 model year, this will change across the board.

Each passenger car will now be titled “Q”, with a two-digit designation representing the individual model. SUVs and crossovers will use the prefix “QX”, followed by a two-digit number signifying each model.

That means the G Sedan, in its new generation set to debut next month at the Detroit Auto Show, will now be the Q50. Current G Coupe and G Convertible cars will be renamed Q60, while flagship M Sedan lineup will now be called the Q70.

For SUVs, the lineup will start with the QX50, formerly the EX. The JX 7-passenger crossover will now be the QX60, the FX sport-cross will be the QX70, and the full-size current QX56 luxury SUV will be renamed QX80. AWD models will no longer have an “X” tacked on at the end of the model name.

Infiniti’s rationale stems in large part from other automakers already holding the trademarks for names that would have otherwise been used for the expanded lineup. Another just-revealed juicy tidbit: the Q70 flagship sedan will soon debut in an ultra-high-performance trim, with a boosted 3.0-liter V6 making 550 horsepower. Wow!

The name system is retarded...for sure. I must admit I love my M, it's better than anything else in the price range. We shall see what redesign the Q70 will have.

I still don't understand the name change - didn't find it confusing at all.

550 horses??? For bout the same price as a BMW 535? I'd take the Q70 with AWD!

I had been thinking of why they chose Q and QX and here's what I came up with:

They own the following trademarks that I know of: G, I, J, M, Q for cars and EX, FX, JX, QX for trucks ...

And if they wanted to go with a single letter for the car and xX for a truck then they couldn't use M because of Mazda (MX) and G because of Lexus (GX).

That left I, J, and Q.

I guess it's possible that IX might run into issues with BMW or at least IX looks like it's "Nine" and therefore more confusing. So I is out.

That leaves J and Q. The old J30t was not a particularly noteworthy car. And I guess if you're choosing between J and Q, the Q makes more sense.

But the numbering system runs into issues for a while ... And because of Audi they couldn't use single digits ... So I dunno.

I'm just guessing.

Perhaps....I dunno.

What is nuts is that the only great think Infiniti had going for it was the "G".
...and now they threw that name legacy away for the crazy Q scheme.

If there was any model that the buying market knew from the line-up it was the "G". Now that is gone, and all the models are clumped into an obscure "Q" moniker.

I can't find the logic behind it. Seems a big step backwards.

I agree. I don't understand it either. But if they were going to make a change, Q/QX seems their only option other than going to names which they have never done.

I had a J30 (non -t) for a while. Not a bad car & fun to drive, but it was around when Hurricane Ike came through TX & premium hit over $4/gal & I was poor back then.

When I worked for Nissan N/A as a fixed ops slave driver a few of the dealers I babysat on the Nissan brand were telling me how upset their Infiniti counterparts were when they heard the news the GT-R was coming over as a Nissan.

The Infiniti fixed ops guy who worked with me in the field told me the same story.

Too bad the 550hp Q70 will likely cost the same as a GTR, i.e. close to or over $100K.

They will sell exactly zero Ms or Q70s at that price even with that engine.

Good. I can't wait to buy a slightly used one or new one off the showroom floor for under $50K.

If Nissan can sell 100k GTR, i dont know why Infiniti won't sell 100k Q70 with similar performance but better everything else.

at $100k they will be competing with M5, so they better put the 3.8L TT in there.

I've been saying for a while that Nissan should have: a) incorporated a VK motor in the G (read C63, IS-F competition) and b) adapting a VR38DETT (or a variant thereof) in the M.

Infiniti needs a car to compete with the M3/RS5/C63/IS-F/CTS-V if for no other reason than to make the Q50 an aspirational car.

Obviously it has to be good too.

I think Infinitis are generally good cars and more interesting than a Lexus but not good enough that it can charge BMW money for a car that's not quite a BMW.

^ This

I'll just add that if a V8 is no longer in the cards then variants of the VR38DETT needs to be.

Its true.

I was working on an Infiniti DVD manual film for the all new 2nd gen G and M (at the time)....and the Infiniti rep was all pissy about the GT-R not being an Infiniti when I started asking him about it.

He said Nissan was stupid for the decision, it would never sell, and who buys a car like that at that price from a non-luxury marque and how the serivce network at dealers would suck...because while the car had a name with enthusiasts...most people in the states had no idea of its heritage.

I said...yeah OK...but you have heard about a car called the Corvette Z06 (and of course now the ZR1) right? Its a Chevy...its not cheap...and it sells quite well.

Considering its been several years since...I'd say he was wrong.

I agree.

I was just mad that I had to sign off on a few early transmissions on those things. Hurt my performance numbers as it shot my warranty approvals way up! IIRC, we were being charged 14k for parts alone on a trans. The dealers loved it, their sales went up, CSI, etc. I wished the Infiniti guys would have to eat that.

I really wanted that to happen. A V8 G

Not gonna happen with the new Q50 though, not with cafe.

Infiniti has revealed details of its latest Q70, updated for the 2015 model year with a subtle styling refresh and the option of a long-wheelbase model. These join a raft of standard safety features to ensure the Q70 remains competitive in an ever more advanced market sector.

Only the eagle-eyed will spot most of the car's exterior changes, the Q70 largely keeping Infiniti's signature flowing curves and sharply-contoured hips as before. The Q70 does get a new set of headlights though, and a redesigned "double arch" grille has a new 3-dimensional look thanks to its waved mesh finish. The front bumper has also been reworked, with new foglight units integrated into a chrome detail low on the bumper.

At the rear, there's more light-work, with a distinctive LED signature highlighting each unit. The top of the trunk lid has been flattened off and the bumper slimmed down in an attempt to make the car look longer and lower. Throw in a redesigned chrome strip and you're there, while sport models get a new, wider front bumper, a set of 20-inch alloy wheels and low-profile tires, and an "athletic" rear bumper design finished in high gloss black. The upshot of all this work is a low drag coefficient--from 0.26 for the hybrid, to 0.28 on the Sport.

The subtle changes continue inside--unless you opt for the new long-wheelbase version that is, where the extra 5.9 inches of legroom is much more apparent. Knee room is increased to 32.4 inches, a class-best figure, while clambering in and out is made easier by larger rear doors with an auto-closing feature. Other rear-seat features include heated seats, reading lights and a 12v power outlet.

All new Q70s benefit from extra sound insulation, improved sealing and stiffer wheels, in an effort to reduce road noise. This aspect has been enhanced further with Active Noise Control to cancel out exterior hums to those inside. Handcrafted wood and leather is standard across the range, as is a 7-inch full-color driver information display. Driver and front passenger also get 10-way adjustable heated seats. Features such as Enhanced Intelligent Key, Bluetooth, dual-zone automatic temperature control, Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System and Infiniti Connection telematics return for the 2015 car.

V-6 and V-8 gasoline engines also return. The range starts with a 330-horsepower, 270 lb-ft 3.7-liter V-6, and ends with a 420-hp, 417 lb-ft 5.6-liter V-8. Those figures are revised down to 416-hp and 414 lb-ft for the long-wheelbase model. For those seeking higher fuel economy figures, a 302-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid model remains available. In its 2014 guise, the Q70 hybrid managed an EPA-rated 31 mpg combined (29 mpg city, 34 mpg highway). All models use a 7-speed automatic transmission and most offer the option of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Click the image to open in full size.

As ever, tech features heavily too. New to the Q70 following introductions on other Infiniti and Nissan models, the Q70 features Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Around View Monitor (for 360 views around the car when parking), Backup Collision Intervention to prevent backup accidents, and Forward Emergency Braking to mitigate the risk of forward collisions.

Those engine specs are quite nice!

Too bad the exterior car design is still goofy looking.

I still like the design. The latest M56/Q70 looks pretty good in S trim.

I really like the exterior. Very aggressive and luxury at the same time.

however, those 20" wheels and interior are 8 years old.
Infiniti ruined that "stacked" interior design when they start putting the same design in their Nissan car.

but still better than RLX

The latest iteration of the former M does nothing for me. I wanted to like it but, given the competition, I think Nissan/Infiniti really whiffed on the Q70.
