DVD Disk Reading Error
I got this error on my GPS recently. It's been persistant, so I brought it to the dealer. Rant to follow after the picture.
Okay. So I brought it to the dealer, and they pretty much told me that my car has a factory defect that the DVD unit in the trunk scratches the DVD disk somehow, so it can't be fixed by replacing the navi disk. They recommended the replacement of my entire navigation system, totalling $2000+ dollars. They then proceeded to tell me that my car is out of warranty so I hafta pay for the entire thing out of pocket. I am pissed.
This is a pretty good excuse to upgrade to the 2011 navi....
But it's pretty upsetting how this Acura dealership treats it's customers. Something that is completely not my fault, not anyone's fault but the factory's and they won't do anything about it. Not even a discount or anything. I mean, I'm not sure how replacing under warranty works, and not sure if the dealer would take the hit for it, but it kind of sucks. Can someone please explain to me how all that works, because right now i'm just kinda pissed off at the dealer. I read in the warranty booklet about items that can be covered after the warranty expires, and plan to write to Acura about it this week as well.
But this is just kind of a heads-up, some navigation units in the TSX may be faulty. I'm not sure how, but check yours to see if it's affected and take care of it before your warranty is out.

Have you actually taken out the DVD to see if it really is scratched? I would take it out and try to read it in a computer. Or, put the disc in a friend's TSX. Maybe the dealer is trying to pull your leg...

how is your 2010 out of the 3 year warranty... i thought i was pretty good at math... go to a different dealer and report this one to acura. if they say its a factory defect, do NOT pay. if another dealer wont do it, contact acura corporate and get them to satisfy the customer aka you. hell, tell them you want a 2011 navi for trying to screw you over lmao

And this shitty dealer is the ONLY dealer in my area. I'll be driving 2 hours to Acura of Baton Rouge for my next Acura if they don't do something to help me out with this.

I have extended warranty precisely for this reason. My car has 57K miles on already, but that's over 3 years. I have read somewhere there is a defect on some of the units and Acura had to replace them with another USED/Reconditioned unit. I will call/email your area rep first and see what they can do, if that failed, contact Honda in Torrance CA (it's their head office).

Our DVD unit is from Alpine, so I did a search in the forum and found something in the 1G forum.
https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-tsx-problems-fixes-128/navigation-dvd-player-error-676588/
Forum member Stevestr sent his unit to Alpine in March 2011 and got it fixed. Below is his writeup:
Called Alpine
They stated that they cannot guarantee ahead of time if replacement parts are available but the offer still stands:
1) Check or Money Order (he did not mention them taking Credit Cards) for $158 to Alpine Electronics
2) Return the unit to:
ALPINE ELECTRONICS OF AMERICA
2012 ABALONE AVE UNIT D
TORRANCE CA 90501
3) Include contact info, phone #, and brief description of problem
4) INCLUDE NAVI DISC
I sent it off today. Shipped through UPS Store and let them pack it. Shipping is $11.65 for Ground. Packing was $5.79 before AAA Discount.
My location offers 5% off for the shipping and 15% off for the packing materials with AAA card. My total was $16.27.
Alpine said 5-7 day for repairs. I'm thinking 2 weeks round trip. I have a 2004 TSX but my Navi box was stamped 3-2003 so I am crossing fingers that they still have repair parts!
Thanks to whoever found this information first. I did call the 888-628-4357 (M-F 7-5 PST) number and he confirmed the above information.

Thanks, Tech! I'll be sure to do both of those. I'll give Acura a call tomorrow.
If all fails, off to Alpine it'll go.
And If that fails. I wonder how much it'll cost for a 2011 Navi system or how long before I find one in a junkyard...
White, my car is out of warranty haha. 59,700 miles.

THis really works. Go buy a Memorex "Total Solution Cleaning Kit". FOllow the instructions on cleaning the navigation disk and take cleaning disk that you bought and put in unit 5 times. Put the navigation disk back in and it should work. I tooks someone else's avdice and it only cost me $13.00. NICE

I have the same problem on my 2008 RDX.
But talk about Acura Dealerships. Dishonesty must be ingrained in them from Day 1.
I purchased my RDX in Pittsburgh, PA one year before I moved to Canada, I intended to move to Canada and worked with the dealership to ensure it would be a smooth warranty and service event. The dealership told me that Canada would accept the warranty immediately! So I bought the car.
One year later, the Navi problem surfaced... The dealer in Calary told me I had to take the car BACK to Pittsburgh to get it repaired under warranty. MAYBE if I called a Montana dealer they might consider warranty service, but I would have to drive it there and leave it for repair.
I moved to Red Deer, Alberta. I got the same answer from the dealer.
This time they told me that there were swirls on the disk and this is due to a known defect in the drive system. Have to replace the Navi ($4000). Again no help getting my warranty transferred to Canada.
I moved to Edmonton, the car's 4 year warranty is now out, however the service dept told me exactly what to do to get the balance of my powertrain warranty moved to Canada. Thank You!!! Why couldn't the other two dealers do this. Also, when the service manager returns from vacation in a few days the service rep suggested I call and see if he can do anything to help. (But now I am two years out of warranty, so I really have to consider the reality...)
Now it took three months to work through Acura Canada, a LOT of attitude from Acura Canada about transferring a US car into Canada.
And my Navi is still intermittent, it only worked for a year....
