man you posted about the same problem in 4 different places. It's better if you make one thread and wait.

your descriptions are prettty vauge though.

you say your idle goes from 1 to 2 thousand rpm. Does it do this all the time, or only when cold?

the car should idle well below 1000 rpm. It should actually be at about 700 rpm after warmed up.

how long have you had this car?

how has this car been maintained?

eny check engine lights?

the engine is supposed to have a plastic cover on it. The yellow numbers are from a junkyard. Ur engine, or intake mani has been replaced.

how can the rpm drop below zero? I don't think ur explaining that right.

I'm sorry to tell you, but an RL like you describe is nothing but trouble. Be prepared to pay a mechanic thousands to get it running right. If you just bought it take it back n get ur money back

old luxury cars are expensive to maintain, especially when they're as neglected as yours

Does the engine shake a lot while driving, too? Does it shake a LOT when you come to a stop/slow down? Is there a loss of power in the higher gears? Like let's say you're on the freeway and you want to pass the car in front you and you mash on the gas, does it barely pick up if at all? My 240sx did that because one of the valve seals broke so it was only running on 3 cylinders. The engine shook like hell at lower rpms.

just throwing out ideas, but could it be the iacv (idle air control valve) or fast idle air valve. i'm not really sure how they fail on these cars.

or maybe some loose, missing, or cracked vacuum lines? since it definitely looks like repair work was attempted.

i agree with old_hatch, the yellow writing on the intake manifold generally means used replacement parts.

is there any way for you to find out if it was just the manifold replaced or the whole motor?

in that video, was the car at normal operating temperature? Idle shouldn't drop like that or be at 1000 rpm when the engine is at normal operating temperature.

if your serious on keeping this car, I say start simple. Give it a good tune up and then follow with some trouble shooting.

if this engine was run on anything but premium it probably has alot of deposits. Run premium gas

change plugs, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve. Get some gumout Regane hig milage at walmart and run them through a couple of tanks along with maybe some seafoam. If your good mechanicly that it. It sucks when you have to pay others to do all this work.

Rpm rising and dropping when at normal operating temp is most likely a vacuum leak. Rpm rising and dropping during cold start could be fast idle valve but I don't think the 1999 is equipped with one. Also check the the mass air flow sensor on the air intake I think yours is equipped with one or if not the idle air control valve. Change the spark plugs to ngk platinums do not gap them you will ruin the platinum on them they are pre-gapped. You might even have a partially plugged fuel filter or fuel pump filter but not most likely.

I know my RL came with a fast idle control valve. You can clean them with some Deep Creap or carb and choke cleaner. Mine was sticking and i had a funny idle. Like Old Hatch said...do a basic tune up and then troubleshoot.

Probably a vacuum leak. Look for broken vacuum hoses around the back end of the air box, behind the intake manifold, the gasket on the intake manifold, and also check the check valve on the brake booster hose. Don't forget any vacuum hose going to the throttle body and last but most common if you take off the whole air intake assembly you'll probably see that the boot going onto the throttle body is torn that is most likely your problem.
