Question When to change brake pads?

My 07 TL NBP has roughly 28K miles on it. I am starting to wonder about the brake pads. There is not any problem with braking or any screeching. I just don't know when do most of you guys change your pads? And what do you use for stock suspension setup with performance matching stock pads and minimal dust? Thanks!

Asked and answered literally thousands of times. Please do a search. Plenty of good pads out there, you decide....

FYI, service limit is 1.6mm. If you can see 1/8 " pad material, you don't need new pads.

I asked about my pad life @ 25K miles during an oil change and my mechanic laughed at me when he checked -- said I had "a lot" left. Then I looked at the pads myself when he put the car up on the rack @ the next service to confirm that I had over 50% left [warning: YMMV].

BTW, I just had the OEM front pads changed, for the first time, @ 60K+ miles.

The lesson here: look at each pad yourself (to account for potential uneven wear), or get the estimated remaining pad life in writing if the car is at a dealership where they won't let you into the bay to do a visual check.

My 05 TL has 102,000 miles on it and it's running on all original pads. I keep bringing the car in and asking if they're worn down yet and they keep saying no. So, just have them check occasionally.

Thanks for the information about the mileage at which you changed your car's brake pads. That is what I needed. I am going to look the next time I rotate my tires. I was asking because I can't see the remaining pads with the wheels on in the front. The rear pads have a lot of material left.

I always thought it was 2mm, but there's no way to see .4mm just by looking.

Huh? What kind of wheels do you have where you can't see the pads?

Brembo Front Pads at 50k

A big part of the need to change pads is how and where you drive - which I'm sure you all know. I run 100 miles a day round trip and because of the highway driving, I can stay off the brakes for a quite while. One thing I would have done differently was a brake service around 35k. Turns out the right front inside pad was dragging enough that it prematurely forced a change a 50k, which required new pads and resurfacing. So if you do a lot of highway, there's a good chance that you can get some strong mileage out of the stock set. Next, I'm considering Ceramic pads to lengthen the life and eliminate the DUST!! Any comments on what's best would be helpful.
