Fender bender, rear ended a mini van at 15mph

just hit some idiot who slamed on his brakes on the freeway. luckly I was able to slow down enough but I still hit him doing under 15mph.

He just walked away with scratches, but my bumper is cracked in few places and driver side headlight looks like it got pushed back 1/2".. and hood latch won't open. so some light damage inside too I suppose.

Anyone know how much genine acura bumper and headlight costs from online retailers?

Check out ebay. What year car do you have? You can get a set for around 300-500 used and bumper at around 300-500.

Send me some pictures and I will possibly buy your old parts.

So you're planning on paying out of pocket and not going the insurance route?

Funny how someone who slams on his brakes to avoid and issue is the idiot because he was being followed too close.

Good luck with the repair.

LOL. My thoughts exactly. If you weren't too close and you were paying attention, there's no way a mini van is going to out brake a TL.

^ x3. There's probably some guy on a different forum who started a thread- "some idiot in a TL rear ended me on the highway......"

OP- are you trying to do this out of pocket and avoid the penalty that you would undoubtedly suffer from your insurance company? If yes, your probably looking at anywhere from 1k-1500?

The headlights are expensive if you buy new, if I remember right they are about $600 each, wholesale, more if you buy from a dealer parts counter.

this is exactly the same thing that happened to me on the fwy except a "sob" exit the carpool illegally passing the double yellow and the car in front of me stopped in time and i bearly made it. dameage my headlight and bumper since i was llowered.

the price it cost me was a deal
Passenger 2005 headlight - $80
Front bumper - 250
Front Lip - 150 (got to upgrade when you have an accident)
passenger headlight lower bracket - $40

that cost me 540 to do all that, i went the used route with everything minus the brackets.

for you if you said hood add about another 250

the headlight might be pushed back because your headlight bracket got destroyed. if u change the bracket to a new one you should be ok, unless u bent the radiator support =\.

Post some picture of the damage!

I agree with previous posts. If you rear end someone you were following too close. Even if they were cut off, hit a wall, it doesn't really matter there is no excuse. Leave some room.

hm not always the case..I got in a fender bender a month ago (light scratches) because I was making a right turn and the person in front of me braked almost halfway into the intersection because of someone making an abrupt U-turn while I was looking left to check the traffic so i could make my own right turn it sucked but it was pretty unavoidable

to the OP, prices for the bumper and everything are pretty standardly low from OEM sites, just try to work on the price for the paint

So, pretty much you were following too close and weren't paying attention, pretty much what everyone else has said.

I Lol'd when I read it.

Unfortunately my GF has had 3 identical accidents the same way this guy did. I think she learned after the third, it's been over 5 years.

It doesn't really matter what the car in front did you are supposed to follow at a distance that if they come to a complete stop in an instant you can stop without hitting them. That's what the 2 second rule in drivers ed is about. I don't think anyone follows it, myself included, but if you rear end someone don't blame the person in front.

There is one case where this doesn't apply that I can think of. If someone else cuts in front of you and slams on their brakes cutting into your cushion and not giving you time to brake.

That's what happened to someone on this forum...

Forgot who he was, though.

I guess I take special issue with this as someone who used to commute a lot. People follow so close on the highway that they would barely have time to realize they were following too close, much less react, before hitting the person in front. Lifted trucks were the worst and I guess they don't realize I would most likely come out better in a wreck than they would. It's annoying being behind tailgaiters too. I try and have a relaxing 45 minute drive down the highway by going whatever speed the car in front is going but not following too close. But there's always the guy in front that has to tailgate and it's constant brake lights in my face the whole way to work. I don't get it, I can usually go the entire way to work without hitting the brakes once I'm on the highway but the jackass in front of me will hit them 50-60 times because he's following too close. Way off topic, I know.

Really, the only time it's not your fault when you rear end someone is if they cut you off and then immediately slam on their brakes. Since they took away your assured clear distance, it's unavoidable.

Or, if someone has their car stopped in the middle of the road, around a curve on the bottom of a small hill to show his daughter the goats on the side of the road....yes, that happened to my wife, and yes the officer gave a ticket to the person she rear ended.

^ I would have to completely agree with this and then some. During the summers when I work full time I'm always in traffic for a good 30 minutes in the morning. My routes usually never include highway since they wouldn't lead to my destination faster or provide any benefit since they aren't along the way. Often when a tailgater in front of me taps the brakes every few seconds I give them around 2 car lengths so I don't have to tap the brakes until we come to a full stop. I find it so frustrating to follow behind these drivers as it is an absolute eyesore to see those lights flash on and off every 5 seconds like a preset timer. There have been instances where I do this and the person behind me decides to tailgate, swerve over into my left or right lane, gun it, and cut me off. All in all to lead to them repeating the same process as the driver previously in front of me, brake, let go of brake, brake, etc.

Yes, it's almost always the following driver's fault for a rear-ender.

However, I follow the 2-second rule; in fact, I use the 3-second rule because my reflexes are not perfect. Even on the Santa Monica (10) freeway @ rush hour, I use the 3-second rule while driving in the #2 lane (next to the fast lane).
It amazes me how almost all drivers respect the gap I use and don't cut me off or jump in front.

I feel bad for the OP with all the posts regarding whose fault it is.
