Aston Martin: Cygnet news **Discontinued (page 2)**

The Cygnet.

Aston has announced plans for a new Aston Martin that will take your breath away, but not in the manner you would normally expect.

The new Cygnet, still a concept at this stage, is based on Toyota’s iQ – yes you did read that right. According to Aston’s CEO Dr Bez, the inspiration came from luxury yacht tenders. The car would be offered as an option with the purchase of a Vantage, DB9 and DBS.

The idea is that the Cygnet will allow customers to drive their proper Aston Martin from their homes in the Cotswolds to the outskirts of London, before continuing their journey to the centre of town in similar luxury but in a more 'city-manageable' package.

hmmm, on one hand, its cool if they ONLY sell this as an offer paired with a 'real' aston. that way you have a second car/billboard that gives evidence that you own a vantage, DB9, etc.

do i think this will be greenlighted? NO. unless AM has a legal clause that disallows an owner from selling their cygnet seperately from their vantage/db9, etc...or else AMs entire marketing concept will come crashing down. scenario: owners who already dont care much about their cygnet, as it was received promotionally, will be even more provoked to put their cygnet on the market for a huge exclusive price. (the demand for the cygnet will be astronomical, if they could not be purchase inclusively). in turn, buyers will start taking private ownership of the cygnet without having a 'real' AM in their stable. what good will that do for aston?

is that a detachment from the real aston martin like the motocycle that comes out of the batmobile? u know something like in case of emergency or crash, it'll ditch the rest of the body and come out in one piece like this

I don't understand. Is Aston Martin aiming to become more than just a niche sports car manufacturer?

Aston Martin has a knack for producing some of the most beautiful cars in the world, but the firm’s latest project could bring that reputation to a screeching halt. In order to pass more stringent upcoming fuel economy regulations, Aston Martin is readying its own version of the Toyota iQ city car.

As strange and blasphemous as it sounds, Aston Martin is indeed working on an iQ of its own, officially dubbed the Cygnet. The tiny hatch is still in its concept phase, but is reportedly being strongly favored for production. To prove the Cygnet is not just a vaporware joke, Aston Martin released a single teaser image of the dressed up iQ.
The teaser image reveals the Cygnet is basically a Toyota iQ in Aston Martin clothing. Up front is Aston Martin’s signature grille, with hood louvers giving the Cygnet way more bark than bite.
Although the standard interior of the iQ is rather sparse, the Aston Martin version will be completely revamped. Expect plenty of fine leather with quality standards up to those of the company’s DBS supercar.
Although the Cygnet wears the Aston Martin badge, don’t expect much in the way of performance. The iQ’s drivetrain will remain essentially intact, which means a three-cylinder will be the Cygnet’s source for motivation.
Although Aston Martin has yet to release specific details on the Cygnet – such as price and a release date – company CEO Ulrich Bez is high on the project. “Much work is still required, but I am confident that this project could become reality in the not-too-distant future,” Bez said of the Cygnet. Surfacing reports suggest the Cygnet will list from 23,000 euros ($32,300), with 2,000 examples slated to be produced each year.
Unlike supercar makers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini, Aston Martin doesn’t have a parent company to leverage fuel economy averages. As such, Aston needs a car like the Toyota-sourced iQ to bring its emission average in line with new standards slated to take effect in 2012. The Cygnet is said to be reserved for current Aston Martin owners, which should give the volume model a bit of exclusivity.

Emission regulations will make you do crazy things.

If they ever do another Austin Powers movie, I guess they'll have the perfect car for Mini-Me.

I'd take it just because of the exclusivity. I mean, cmon guys, if you have one of these you already have an AM, so who cares how gay it is?

Guys who have a problem with this... How ELSE would you expect AM to meet the fleet requirements for AVERAGE fuel economy across it's line of products? As the articles have pointed out, unless AM does "something" like this they won't be allowed to be sold here in the states once the fuel economy restrictions are put in place.

The other thing you guys might just be missing here is that many yacht owners actually DO have a small car on the rear deck (or sometimes even IN the hold) of their yacht. This car would fit that function pretty well whereas a large (i.e. regular Aston) would likely be too large and too heavy. Granted many with those types of toys have people pick them up in limo's but their 16 year old children could probably use a 'toy" like that to get aruond on the islands they visit (Bahama's, Hawaii, and those in the Met). When I was younger, we had rather large boat on Lake Michigan and others (with more money and larger 65+ foot yachts) often had small cars ((anyone here remember the AMC Gremlin?) which we could neither afford nor had the space on the baot to carry. They may have been little cheap POS's but they were certainly a lot of fun for us kids way back then (some 40 years ago).
