Floor jack lifting points

Looks like the search is down, because I cannot pull up any search term with it.

In any case, I need to lift the front/rear ends of a 01 3.2TL. Are there designated lift points that I can use with a floor jack to lift the whole front or rear end of the car up?

i use the tow hooks for the rear and sometimes front. will the jack points on the sides not work for you?

Feel under the sides of your car for "tabs". They hang down about 1 inch. They clear the body kit (if you have one... )
[Or, they could be like mine and be bent over and pointless now *tear*. In which case you need a block of 2x4 to space it out.]

^^i can't either - had to get a low profile jack after the drop.

Someone suggested one to me and it was $179
It would be nice to not have to drive up on wood to get my jack underneath.

thanks for the replies, all. On other cars I typically I lift the entire front from a central jacking point, and then slip the jack stands under those "lips" just rear of the front tires.

This is the most stable way to keep the front of the car off the ground evenly. Does the TL have such a central lift point up front?

^^^thats what i do too.

except add a step where i have to drive up on blocks of concrete so the jack fits.
i'm ok w/doing that rather than spending 150 on a low pro jack.

I sure did! I am losing my mind today

Thanks, I'll check it out. On lighter cars like Civics and my older Accord, etc, I am less concerned about lifting from the towhook. I'll try that out. I'm doing some work on a neighbor's car which is the reason I was asking ahead of time. Thanks for the help!

Any ideas why the search here is acting up?

search has been messed up ever since the conversion and upgrade of the software.

i've used that tow hook to raise the entire car (front and back with jackstands on the sides for stability) for hours without any issues. good luck!

There is one jacking point under the front end of the car, between the two wheels. You'll see a little bump there where you can lift from. Other than that, there are two mounting tabs on each side, one near the front wheel and one near the back wheel.

Be careful when using the rear tow hook, if the jack ever slips or the metal somehow bends there, you can puncture your gas tank.

If you can get your car onto a lift you can actually hammer the tabs back into the correct position. I had to do that twice already.

The Helms service manual for the CL has an illustration that designates the center of the front cross member ('...front jacking bracket...') as the floor jack support point.

If you literally go to the front middle of the car and follow the center line (underneath) back slightly, you will see a 'bulge' in the cross member. It has a hole present for drainage. You will see it easily, that is the 'front jacking bracket' for a floor jack.

How are you going to puncture the gas tank from there??? The gas tank is under the rear seat. If it were to come off the rear hook it would only dent the spare tire well.

get a ramp...i've got one from schucks for less than $40...
it's designed to work with lowered cars and it supports up 8,000 lbs
it's safe and cheaper way to go...
you can ask them for clearance of the ramps if you are lowered...
but i don't know how high you want it to be...i only got it for oil changes...

So you're saying the Rear Tow hook is not designed to be a lift point on the 2G, even though it *is* a lift point on the 3G? Why would they do that?

Its a designed lift point. (though any one using a jack with a 1.5" lifting pad is just asking for trouble)

Oh and it would have to be more than a freak accident to fall off and hit the gas tank.

Sorry to b ring up this thread again. Did anyone have a problem lifting it up fromt he rear tow hook? It doesnt raise enough for me to put jack stands under.. My jack is from harbor freight and raises 20 inches... Is anyone else having the same problem?

Sounds like a jack problem.

If you can't get it up enough when you jack it, you might need a helper.

Do you think another 4-inches would help get you there? You could try using a piece of 4x4 lumber between the jack pad and the tow hook to get it up a little bit more.

How high does your Jack normally go?? And yeah I tried the 4x4 to.. I tried with two diff harbor freight Jack .., so everyone jacks the rear okay??

Yeah the smaller floor jacks won't get the car up high enough in the rear to get jack stands in place. I've got this one, works great: ACDelco 34700 - Garage Jack | O'Reilly Auto Parts

I got it when they had a sale for $149.

I've got a 3.5 ton jack that maxes out at about 22".

It works fine to get the car up but I can only use one set of stands with it. I have a larger set of stands that are too tall even on the lowest setting so they're no go. I have a shorter set that I can only use up to about the second setting. Any higher and I'd need some sort of helper.

i find that if i'm jacking up all 4 corners, i have to raise the rear first, or else my harbor freight low pro jack wont raise it high enough.

and if i forget and raise the front first, i just use a helper block to help raise the rear high enough
