B16 service-I did it myself.

Hi Folks-
Couple of days ago, I did the B16 service myself. It wasn’t that bad.

Engine Oil change was easy, no special procedure.

Tire Rotation--Man these PAX tires are heavy, torque them to 90/found pounds.

Checked these times visually: Air filer was good and the rest of suspension links were good and tight.

SH-AWD differential:-drain the old fluid, didn’t need a special socket for the drain plug or the fill hole. Just the 3/8” ratchet did the trick.

-For adding fluid in the SH-AWD differential, I bought a little pump for $10 at the local parts store and used 4-quarts of Honda’s ATF-Z1 that bought from a local Honda dealer.

-After adding roughly .8 quarts of ATF-Z1 to the Hypoid chamber, the ATF fluid started to pour out of the fill hole. But after adding roughly 3quarts of ATF fluid to the Clutch camber the fluid did not spill out of the fill hole.

Did everyone experience the same thing?

Also-when should I flush the front differential? The front differential is not built into the transmission housing in this car.

Overall the whole B16 service took 2 hours or so and it was easy.

I used this link for reference.

How to reset maintenance minder

To deepdezal:

Hello! My congrats!
Taking this opportinity, I'd like to ask simple question:
I'm about to due my first A1 service (RL 2008) and gonna do it
myself like you did. My question about resetting car's service minder:
how did you reset it without the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS)?
Technical ACURA RL guide says that maintenance minder should be
resetted after the service is done. I know how to reset Oil Life
minder, but not a maintenence one. How did you do that?
Thanks!

I reset the maintenance minder for B16 service thru MID. I don't have the exact directions, but it was easy.

--MID=Main Information Display--

Good luck with the oil change.

I got to do the same for my wife's MDX. To me, I'm worried about screwing it up, especially since its the SH-AWD. They do charge me about $180 for the damn service so it definitely makes me wonder about fleecing the customer and it hurts the wallet.

Car service for me falls under my heading of "Things I Pay Someone Else To Do". Unfortunately I have read some threads about people being quoted rediculous amounts for basic service, that's where shopping around comes in handy. But for all those who enjoy it, money saved is a good thing!!

I found out a long time ago, that the master tech, who is more than qualified to rebuild your engine from the crank up, is not the same guy who is changing your oil. Its some semi-skilled guy, who has a real propensity to screw it up. Not trying to bash the oil service techs out there, but I have had a few drain plugs come back torqued to either 2 pounds or 75. I also enjoy doing it!

well considering that a case of atf-z1 costs about 80 (ebay)-- definetely not the dealer...and can last for 3 transmission drain and refill...so it is best we do it ourselves with care.

My question is-- did you guys also do a transmission drain and refill for a B16 service as well? and if you did, I am trying to do it myself first time...is the transmission plug under the plastic cover? thanks--

First off good job.

-For adding fluid in the SH-AWD differential, I bought a little pump for $10 at the local parts store and used 4-quarts of Honda’s ATF-Z1 that bought from a local Honda dealer.

As you painfully found out it is difficult to get the fluid in. Thank God for the pump with a flex hose.

If memory serves correct, Clutch chamber get's 2.8 liters of fluid. each qt=949 ml so 3*949ml=2.85L. Therefore, 3 qts should have filled it. I suspect your car was not perfectly level and a little more drained out. Never the less, always refill until it pours out the fill hole. So hmmmm., I would refill until it pours out.

Also-when should I flush the front differential? The front differential is not built into the transmission housing in this car.

When you say front differential...Are you referring to the transfer case that drives the propeller shaft. If so, I change transfer case fluid every other time I change the transmission fluid. But I did a 3X3 transmission flush and now change transmission fluid at every oil change. Note: Transfer case uses hypoid type fluid not ATF. I believe it's GL4/GL5 type hypoid gear oil.

How much sludge did you see on the transmission drain plug's magnetic portion?

Overall the whole B16 service took 2 hours or so and it was easy.

I used this link for reference.

Yes drain plug is under the cover. You have to remove the splash shield. NOTE: Before you drain make sure you can get the fluid back in. Use the dipstick port. See my thread on 3X3 tranmission flush for specifics.

I absolutely positively love your Avatar's picture. Where can I get this (the picture). I wish I could mod my car to look like it. I would spend up to $5k to look like that. I 'll bet it's an artist rendering of a concept.

Yea. I think that was the concept for the 2011 or 2012 RL.

Tampa,

Thank you, I appreciate this. I have already made my desktop background this picture and tomorrow will change the office desktop to it too. Wife is mad because it was previously our wedding dance picture. She told me I was "Sick" and needed help. Believes I love the RL more than her.
