Nailing or screwing a Coverlay dash cover into the dashboard?
So like most of you I had the infamous passenger-side airbag crack happen in my 08 Type S 6MT. I purchased a Coverlay dash cover this past summer and glued it on with little issues.
Now that it's winter here in Georgia (which really isn't much of winter but temps still occasionally drop to around freezing) the glue on the back side of the cover closest to the windshield has quit bonding due to the temperature fluctuations when I start the car and use defrost mode on the windshield. I've tried re-gluing but nothing will stick. To make matters worse, since it is loose, the cover rattles against the windshield in the passenger-side corner which drives me nuts.
If I were to drill two or three screws into the dashboard to hold the cover in place, and therefore stop the rattling, would that damage any components underneath the dash? Or is there a better solution to this issue? I can't reach very well back near the windshield.

why would you consider screws/nails before something simpler like wedging a piece of foam and using just good ol' friction to keep her in place?

Did you use 3M tape to begin with? That stuff in industrial strength and should hold up fine. Heck, people use it to hold their rear deck lip in place. And it gets exposed to all kinds of elements and high speed wind. No reason it wouldn't work on your dash. Just make sure to stick on a smooth surface and clean it really well.

But If you do go the mail or screw route, I'd suggest no less than 4 inch drywall screws

18 gauge too small.. 10 gauge to be safe

If you're at the point of considering screws and/or nails, how about just shooting some expanding foam in the crevice to take up the gap and stop the squeak?

Just tinker with it, try wedgeing it with something. Definitely don't use screws. My old goofball did that to his Yukon where the clip on the window switch broke... He said he'd screw it, but I didn't belive him until I saw it, lol! Sadly, he now has severe dementia...
if you insist on using a nail, use a small finishing nail and touch a little black paint to it after to hide it... If it's at the base of the windshield, no one should hardy notice it then.

If that doesn't fix it, I suppose filling the crack with some black caulk might fill it up and stop the noise.

Great! WAY better than giving it the nail!
It must have been annoying to consider nailing it!
Also, 3M tape is an appropriate repair for this problem, so atleast you can sleep at night knowing it's not nailed... LOL!!!

I'm in the market for a RDX and can't believe there isn't more coverage about this issue. Have there been any updates as far as fixes? I was looking to get an RDX by months end but I might hold off my purchase if this isn't resolved.

If you have a Coverlay, please ensure you use a sunshade. Mine warped just above the airbag, and now I have to try to tame my OCD ass and glue it back down. If that doesn't work I'm returning this to Rock Auto where I bought it.
