the recommended service is at 105k miles; which includes spark plugs, timing belt, water pump and all of the timing belt pulleys

I think some people have gone as far as 140-160k without changing it but just because they made it that far doesn't mean you should neglect your car the same way.

I wouldn't test my luck on it

Sure, people have done it..

No point in putting it off tho. Just change it. Its more likely then not it will last well over 150k, but why not just change it when its due? Not worth the risk. Are you looking to purchase a car with high mileage that hasn't had the TB service done?

Can ignore it, but eventually it'll bite you in the butt. If you can get it done around 105k, just get it done.

Honda uses an interference engine, that sucker snaps you are sol... change a timing belt = $1k or less, change a motor = $3K or more depending upon what motor you get and if you can do it yourself or not

Your walking on thin ice.

Is there a reason why you are trying to hold out on doing the timing belt? Do you plan on keeping the car?

I would hate to see you post another thread 6 months from now about a timing belt that broke

My friend didn't do his until about 200k without any problems. But like YeuEmMaiMai said - intereference engine means a broken belt means a lot of problems.

I don't see anything wrong with missing the 100k mile mark, and doing it at say 110k. But why put it off?

A TB job is what, $800? How much would a rebuild or engine replacement cost?

It's not even remotely close to the same as not changing your oil. Oil lasts about 5000 miles and then it begins breaking down. If you don't change the oil for 15,000 miles you are absolutely putting undue wear on your engine as the oil breaks down over time and usage. If you wait until 150,000 miles to change the timing belt there is no additional wear done on the engine, however, if it breaks you get instant damage. It's a gamble some people think is worth taking. I myself waited until 135,000 on my 11 year old CL with 0 consequences. Timing belt failures are few and far between on today's smoother running low friction engines. My son's 98 Civic had 252,000 miles on the original timing belt before we changed it. If you are thinking of selling the car, changing the belt will give the new owner piece of mind and make it easier to sell, otherwise it's just a low percentage gamble to wait.

almost as in if you neglect maintenance, it will come back and bite you.

How about the transmission fluid? Is your car automatic or manual?

FYI - cars come with owner's manuals, and those manuals include a maintenance schedule.

Change the timing belt. I had the timing belt break on my 91 Honda CRX right at 100k and it cost me good money to fix the engine. I always ran full synthetic oil in it, but the low friction didn't make a difference on the timing belt.

When my 2006TL was 7 years old but had only 65k miles my dealer insisted on the 105k service and I complied. It was worth the money. After the service the engine idles quieter, the ride is smoother and I have the peace of mind that my timing belt and water pump are OK for another 7 years. When I sell the car in a couple of years, someone is going to get a really well maintained vehicle for a well justified premium price.

Again, you're talking about almost 25 year old technology. I don't know how many years that 100K was but that certainly could've played into it as well. I had an 81 escort that the timing belt broke on at 78,000 miles. You can't compare older technology to the newer stuff. Change it, don't change it, he's talking about a car that is maybe valued around $4000-$5000 tops. Spending 25% of the value of the car on that maintenance that may or may not break is a personal decision. I personally would ride it out if I wasn't selling the car.

105k is good enough for me, like very one else said $800 is better than new motor. Why risk it?

I'm at 130k. Been putting it off since the stealership originally quoted me $1300 at 105k. This thread has been up for a week now and got me worrying again. Thus just scheduled it with a local performance shop which quoted me "premium quality aftermarket parts" for $875 installed.

^^ You're doing this service once and want it done right...I'd personally source the Honda/Acura OEM parts myself and get an installation estimate vs. 'premium quality aftermarket parts' (which may be cheap knockoffs) but that's just an opinion.

Yeah you can get the timing belt and water pump kit for around $200-$300 which are all nearly OEM Honda/Acura parts (the exact same parts that are on the car when they assembled the engine from factory) and than just pay the shop labor to put it on.

You might end up paying the same price that they originally quoted you but to me I would much rather have the piece of mind knowing that they are performing the service using actual OEM parts and not "OE Equivalent" parts...

Everyone throws the word "premium" around to make something sound much better than it really is.

My light came on at 103k for the timing belt. I found a dealer who only wanted $650 so why not? Had them perform a valve adjustment as well and she runs and sounds like a new car. Do it!

i changed mine at 125k...the belt still looked great, no signs of cracking of fraying. Im sure it could have lasted until 150k but I guess why take the risk?

Yes sir, they put a very reasonable package together for me that included the timing belt service, spark plugs, valve adjustment, oil and trans fluid change. Not only was the service excellent, but i saved atleast a thousand bucks by going there.

They also found a giant crack in my intake tube and a busted axle seal. They didn't have the parts that day so they gave me a loaner to drive 90 miles back to my house.

Your belt may last, but your water pump seal may not.
Even a little engine coolant is bad for your timing belt.

There isn't any scheduled maintenance for the TL.

It is all based by the MID. MID tells you to do something you do it.

For 'peace of mind', I'd do it. Even though I'm in the same boat as you, but I had my engine replaced by Acura at 40k mark and I'm at 150k now, I assumed that they replaced the belt as well.

Nice!! They have run specials from time to time on the TB and there are AZ members from New England that have driven down to get the work done there and save some $$

I did the belt on my 07 at 110k the belt, pulleys and water pump looked like they could go another 50k-100k miles. It is a major maintenance on the car but it is up to you to decide if it is worth the risk. I have done Google searches for timing belts breaking on Acura TL's the only ones I saw were people who changed the original and used a non-OEM brand belt and I didn't see many of an OEM belt breaking even with high mileage. Age has a lot to do with the belt as well I wouldn't let the belt get more than 10 years old.

what about TL's that have lower mileage?? my '06 only has 78k miles on it... the dealership recommended i do the service in 2013 (7 yr mark) but i didn't do it...i have been thinking i would wait until the car had 105k miles on it minimum to do the service...i am driving an avg of 12k per year right now...so would probably hit 105k in a little over 2 years from now...so car will be 10 yrs old at that mark...y'all think i will be ok?

I went 105,000 on my 06 TL and had the timing belt, water pump, pulleys and plugs changed. All the old parts were returned to me and looked new. Probably could have gone another 20-30k but why risk it?

I just got this car about maybe a year ago, 04 TL 6MT and to the best of my knowledge the timing belt has not been done. I just hit 155170 miles. I am planning on doing it very soon. I want to get the Aisin kit. I am planning on driving from the cape to upstate New York tomorrow night. Hopefully she’ll be ok. I took the timing cover off and the belt “looked” good. But you know.
