After 3 years, why do I still suck at driving my 6MT TSX?

And I'm not a manual noob. I've been driving manual cars forever now but every time I go a week or more without driving the TSX, the next time I drive it, it's like I'm learning to drive stick all over again.

I recently drove a new Civic Si and it was so damn easy to drive smooth.
Hop back into the TSX and I'm met with the most jerky 1 -> 2 shift, my gf nearly got choked by the seatbelt.
There's times I feel like the engagement point is constantly changing, from shift to shift!
The throttle is so inconsistent, sometimes I'll be met with clutch chatter by not gassing enough, sometimes I'll over rev on a downshift. It's frustrating to say the least.

I almost always had some trouble with the 1-2 jerkiness as well.

If you think TSX is bad, go drive an M Roady. I learned how to drive stick in this car and it wasn't easy.....

same here. everytime i think i've figured out the balance between gas and clutch, it always changes. i've noticed that you need barely any gas to get going, no matter what gear you shift into. frustrating.

My wife has been driving the car a lot lately, so I hadn't driven it in a few weeks. I had exactly the same reaction, with a shifter so precise, why then is the clutch engagement point alway feel tricky. Don't get me wrong, I have only ever driven manuals and refuse to drive auto - unless it's a rental- the TSX transmission is one of the best out there, but it does take some steady use. Can this be a case of the DBY throttle interfering with your input to the accelarator?

It likes fuel, don't let off the fuel too much when you shift and you'll get better shifts. Feels weird, but works.

like most have already said, feather and fuel. That does the trick for me. Once I am past the 1 to 2 its smooth sailing. The gear ratio gap is so big between those two, and honestly the synchros could be better for the change. If I try to do it fast and aggressive I get a good transition in car performance (no jerking) but there is a smidgen a grind. I also have noticed if I don't drive for a week or two it takes a bit to get back in the groove.

its the crappy dbw system. i can adapt to any manual car with a throttle cable system in a couple of shifts except for cars with puck clutches...i hate those!

is the dbw system the one that "learns" the drivers' style and adapts accordingly? If so...i hate it too...i have the exact same issue in my 04 TL. 1 and 2nd is always a task to get thru smoothly...and forget when you're punching it...lol...unless of course you turn off VSA...then it's much better.

Same here, drove my friend's '08 Si and even though it had DBW, it was so much easier to drive. Even when letting off the gas, it wasn't as jerky hitting the throttle again compared to the TSX.

yep. clutch does not need to be pressed all the way to the floor and don't let off the throttle completely and you will be smooth...

I thought there was an earlier thread about this...but in any case, from what I have read it is the DBW (i don't think the dbw learns your driving btw). I have the same "problem", but what i find is that I have to be making a conscious shift from 1st to 2nd. In other cars I have driven, the shift occurs mindlessly, as in: I just shift without thinking about it. With the TSX everytime, I have to remind my self, dude, this is 1st to 2nd, give it some more gas while the clutch is being depressed. I still miss it and have a shift not that smooth maybe 30% of the time.

I'm not that bad, but after driving my car, when I get in my gf's Echo 5MT every few weekends, I have to remind myself to shift. It's a little klutzy for the first few miles.

Hmmm...I've been trying to not depress the clutch all the way...like move the seat back a bit and just press the clutch enough to engage the gear smoothly and it's been much better. Maybe it's that little peice in the slave (there's a thread about removing it) that creates that lag in actual release of the clutch. So when you let go of the pedal there's a slight lag between actual engagement of the gear which gives that jerk. By pushing it all the way to the firewall it takes that much longer creating that much more of a lag. In other gears we tend to not push the clutch all the way in since they go in like butter.

Thoughts?

Our 3 vehicles all have manual transmission so each has its own way to use the clutch and shift. Two of the vehicles have 6MT and the one is 5MT. Have to remember that also.

Clutch engagement and throttle response are not good for smooth gear change. This has been a problem since day one on our 2004 TSX. It needs a lot of gas to make the 1 to 2 shift smooth. When driving slow (like in a parking lot), the car will jerk like riding a bucking bronco. Still a great car.

Yep, gears change a lot easier, when driving fast.

I totally remember the "bronco" felling when I had my 05 6MT TSX. PArking lot driving was the worst!!

rockstar is spot on.
I have my seat adjusted so that I can push the clutch down to the floor only if I use my tippy toes, which means I have to be pretty deliberate if I want to actually use that last inch or two of clutch travel. I've positioned my seat forward just an inch or two for the last few days, just for ha-ha's - and I've been sucking at driving my TSX ever since!

I'm making a huge assumption here guys...that the TL and TSX use a similar clutch system. If so...
do yourselves a favor and read this thread and do it or have it done for you. Your car will finally be the dream to drive you always imagined. Tried it last night.

I came in here hoping to see someone else who bangs against the rev limiter still too...

But yeah, I get a jerky start here and there too. Had the same problem in my Civic Si ('til I wore that clutch down, lol).
