RV6 V2 J-Pipe Sneak Peak/Feeler
#407
Installed the J-Pipe and test pipe yesterday using a lift at my friend's shop. The hardest part of the install was getting one of the nuts off the stock J-Pipe.
Somebody at the Acura dealership (3rd gear synchro prob was fixed under warranty a month ago) must have lost one of the stock nuts and kluged one together by welding a washer to a nut, but the nut they used was quite thin. Then they installed it in the most difficult position, at the front pipe above the frame crossmember, and torqued it on like crazy. The socket we were using kept slipping.
Finally the mechanic at my friend's shop took a slightly undersized socket and hammered it on with a small sledge. That and an impact gun got her off. Thanks to Richie for including a set of replacement shouldered nuts! I enjoyed chucking that bastardized one into the garbage bin!
Everything else went very smoothly. The alignment of the bolt holes between the front and rear pipes was a bit tight when getting them over the studs (prob due to the way they sit when tightened down) but a bit of tapping using a hammer and socket (to contact the flange but slip over the stud) got them to seat.
One tip I would suggest: Unbolt the exhaust hanger bracket from the frame and use some lube. Makes removing and installing the hanger on to the J-Pipe much easier.
I only drove it briefly to get home from the shop but initial impressions are improved response at throttle tip in and eagerness at higher rpms.
No change in sound volume but there seems to be a slight change in sound character. It's slightly more metallic and "zingy" than before, if that makes sense. This will change in the next few weeks as I plan to replace the stock rear mufflers with some straight through 2"in/out Magnaflows, but I'm going to leave the stock resonator, mid muffler and most of the pipes in place. I want to improve flow a bit and add some more character to the sound without making it a lot louder. The car is my wife's daily driver and I'm trying to do this without attracting too much of her attention.

I finally installed my RV6 jpipe v2. Actually I had it installed at a local shop. I drove around a little at first and noticed only a small gain. As I drove around more the performance really seemed to improve. This has been debated on this forum, but I think there is some ECU relearning.
Overall, I am pretty happy. My only other mod is the UR pulley, and this definitely has more significant gains. I can't say it feels like a new car, but it is noticeable. Is it me, or is most of the difference in the mid range, say 3-5,000 RPM? The very top end seems about the same.
I think my mileage will improve. I can achieve the same acceleration as before with less gas. I suspect that if I set the cruise control at 65mph, there would be a minor improvement, but in normal day to day driving in traffic, the mileage increase is from feathering the gas more, instead of greater engine efficiency.

^^^ wrt exhaust.....the closer you are to the engine you will get the lower power band to increase.....
for example.....precats and jpipe give you an amazing lower band increase.....where are a catback exhaust will show you more higher band gains.....

Regarding the gas mileage -
I hope your results vary from mine. I thought the EXACT same thing. Wow, I barely touch the throttle to move, so I should be using less gas. Not in my case. My mileage stayed exactly the same as before having the J-pipe.

I thought if your closer to the engine it affects more on the lower power band (<3500rpm) and the farther away you go.....you see gains on the higher power band (>3500rpm)
so well if you only have a catback you tend to see more gains at higher rpm.....whereas the precats and jpipe will show u more gains at lower rpm....
thats why when u throw precats on....u car has a lot of get up and go.....where as a catback exhaust help you when you drop her into 3rd gear from 4th or 5th.....

you say there were losses in the torque in the low end.....(i dont think PCD's would bring in losses....you just wont gain anything....you wont lose anything either)......but yeah between the 2 dyno's, can u mention what all you installed !!! ???
