Pagani: Zonda News

I've always thought this car was better than the Enzo or Carrera GT...but, that's just me (no Yumchah is 'tard comments, okay?!? )...
So purdy.....

========================

2003/04 Pagani Zonda C12-S Roadster
Story by Pagani Automobili

To be produced in a strictly limited edition of 40 completely made-to-measure cars, the Zonda Roadster will once again cristallize Pagani's philosophy: marry the most exotic technology - such as the never-seen-before carbon fiber/carbon textile removable roof - to the loving care of the artigiano handwork, to produce Una Macchina con Anima.

The new Zonda Roadster, like all Pagani creations, has been designed around truly innovative technology ideas, and with a special attention to safety - a key issue in the super convertibles segment, and a constant preoccupation of the manufacturer - as its technical specs show:

- the new carbon fiber central chassis structure reaches the highest structural rigidity level available in the segment, 18.000 Nm/mm in torsional rigidity, 9.000 Nm/mm in flexional rigidity, for a dry weight of 1280 Kg.

- the roll bar, elliptical in section, is built out of carbon and chrome-molybdene alloy and is linked to the aft section of the chassis through a finely handworked Ergal element.

- the full-carbon body shows a new engine hood configuration, and a new rear hood design where two NACA air vents work as air extractors.

- the 7.3L Mercedes Benz AMG engine transmits its 555HP/750Nm power through the ABS/Traction Control safety systems already used in the Zonda S.

- the wheels are forged in aluminum and the 255/35/19 and 345/35/19 tires have been specially developed for the Zonda by Michelin, adding to the car's unique styling and technology.

But the Zonda Roadster is not just a list of superlative safety and perfomance specs: according to Horacio Pagani, founder and head designer of Pagani Automobili: The new Zonda Roadster we will unveil in Geneva is a true expression of the Pagani sprit: we do not just build supercars, we build 'Una Macchina con Anima, a car with a soul'. What the public will discover is more than a beautiful piece of emotion turned into carbon fiber and aluminum: only 40 Zonda Roasters will be handbuilt, each one to the exact taste of its owner, like a perfect-fitting tailored suit. Each will be an original object of desire, each with its own story, each offering something way beyond technical perfection: a soul.

This search for the ultimate level of personalizzazione, a defining Pagani criterion, is especially visible in the car's interior: rare leathers, hand-tailored by Pagani's own team of craftsmen, aluminum and carbon-fiber, all chosen by the car's owner, producing a symphony of sights, touch, smells and sounds that matches the driver's tastes and personality.

Pagani @ the 2004 Paris Motor Show

Horacio Pagani, with his Zonda C12 in 1998, then the C12S in 2000 and the Zonda Roadster in 2003, has created a new generation of legendary cars. At the 2--4 Mondial de l'Automobile, Pagani Automobili reaffirmed its evolution by displaying a two-tone Pagani Roadster as their highlight stand.

Every Pagani is unique, but the Paris Show Car is the first with a two tone paint, very similar to certain cars built in the middle of last century. The upper part of the car is a beautiful metallic Red while the lower part is a metallic Black enlightened by golden dust. This special finishing allows a visual blending of the carbon fibre components with the lower body elements and produces a dynamic effect of the silhouette that is already particularly airy in this open version.

It is also important to highlight that the Roadster, as well as the two other cars displayed, is equipped with the new version of the gearbox produced for Pagani by Cima, the gearbox specialist. Thanks to the experience gained by this supplier in the Formula 1 field, this gearbox allows a faster and, simultaneously, very comfortable gear shifting, thanks to a shorter stroke on the gearbox lever, shortened by 20%, to a refinement of the gearshift mechanism and improved synchronisers, underlining even more the purism of this transmission.

It is a throwback to true exotics. The car can be ordered any way you want. Some have left the body in all carbon fiber upon delivery.

Pagani used to work of Lamborghini. He designed the 25th anniversary Countach.

Source: EVO Mag.

The car will be the most powerful Zonda yet, squeezing an awesome 620bhp from its 7.3-litre AMG engine, and will be priced at the same level as the existing Zonda Roadster. Details of the car, plus confirmation of plans for an all-new supercar to follow in 2007, have been revealed to evo by Zonda creator Horacio Pagani in an exclusive interview.

Even though sales of the current Zonda are going well, Pagani feels the time is right to introduce a new ultimate version of his supercar, featuring various aerodynamic tweaks and a heavily revised version of the existing engine. He wants the car to compete squarely with the new generation of supercars - notably the Ferrari Enzo - that have appeared since the C12S was first developed, and 600bhp is considered minimum requirement for joining this exclusive club.

Extensive aerodynamic work using the latest CAD programs has revealed certain deficiencies in the current design that Pagani is keen to rectify. He has particularly identified the need to redesign the rear spoiler and move the position of the rear-view mirrors from the A-pillar to the front wings.

Computer modelling has shown that airflow around the mirrors becomes disturbed at speed, causing turbulent air to flow directly to the twin rear spoilers, reducing the downforce they create. The fact that the rear spoiler was originally designed as two separate wings, with a large gap between them, also reduces the downforce effect.

By moving the mirrors to the front wings and fitting a one-piece spoiler right across the rear, Pagani has found a way of countering this problem. Further tweaks at the rear involve fitting two new wings under the venturi, to help smooth out the flow of air at the rear of the car and reduce the drag at high speeds.

The computer work also revealed a massive low-pressure spot just behind the front wings, which is causing increased drag on the car, as well as lift. This has been corrected on the new Zonda F by the addition of twin NACA vents on the trailing edge of the front wings whose purpose is to vent air from the front-mounted radiator. During all this aero work, Pagani also discovered that the radiator isn't working as efficiently as it could. The computer model showed that once air enters the front radiator intake at the nose of the car, it gets disturbed within the space between the intake and the front of the radiator. The result is very little air flowing through the top of the radiator. On the new car the front intake is much wider, as well as deeper, so the radiator now works to maximum efficiency, which is deemed essential given the massive power increase for the F.

Overall, maximum downforce measured at 320kph (200mph) has gone up from 700kg to 900kg but is much better balanced, front to rear, than before thanks to the big increase in the effectiveness of the rear wing. The drag coefficient has dropped as well, so top speed is expected to rise significantly.

The increase in engine power has come about from a complete re-think of the big V12's induction system. The standard Mercedes system (which will still be used on the 550bhp versions) was designed with a peak power output of 400bhp in mind, so it is operating way beyond its original design parameters. The completely new intake manifold on the 620bhp version improves breathing through the adoption of special oval-shaped ducts that help maximise the size of each individual tract and hence airflow. Combine this with a revised exhaust manifold, together with a complete re-mapping of the engine's ECU, and even Pagani is surprised at the jump in horsepower achieved from these basic tweaks. A new twin-plate clutch has been developed to handle the extra power.

The Zonda F will have the added bonus of weight savings, as the new intake manifold weighs around a third of the original weight of the standard Mercedes item. With other changes being made to the tubular frame around the engine on the new model and a revised use of carbonfibre in certain key areas, the kerb weight has dropped by a minimum of 20kg to 1260kg.

Other changes made on the Zonda F are the fitment of larger wheels (19in front, 20in rear) with 255/35x19 front and 335/30x20 rear Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres. The new wheels allow larger, 385mm front discs with six-piston callipers to be squeezed inside the rims. There is now also the option for buyers to fit 380mm carbon-ceramic discs to the car for the first time, available as a 15,000Euro option. These will reduce the kerb weight by an even greater amount. The wheels themselves are forged in one piece, weigh 1.5kg less than the current design and are fitted with titanium wheelnuts.

The existing Zonda C12S and Zonda Roadster will continue to be built in their existing spec alongside the new car when production of the Zonda F starts in the spring.

The F will cost approximately £393,000 (based on current exchange rates), which is identical to the current Zonda Roadster.

Pagani's next project after the introduction of the Zonda F is an all-new car that's slated for launch in 2007, details of which will remain firmly under wraps until nearer the time.

Why are they still making the C12-S if the F is faster, cheaper, and overall better?

In any such case, I've said it before and here I am, reiterating it. Pagani has encapsulated the true spirit of a supercar and by all means, the Zonda is most beautiful and hands down, the best supercar in the world.

Even if it may be a hair slower than 2 or 3 other production cars, it is a car unlike any other. The quirky but beautifully flowing design, the awesome technical specs, the light weight, and the exclusivity make this my first and most likely only "dream car."

Wellllll...you could make a case for the Ferrari Enzo and the Carrera GT...
And from the good ol' days, the McLaren F1 and Ferrari F50...

But, when you are dealing with this type of excellence, it's like trying to debate who makes better suits: Brioni or Armani.

I don't think any of those cars come even close to the Zonda in terms of kink and finesse. Maybe I'm too favorable to this car, it sure sounds like in it in my head... but as impressive as a the McLaren F1 is... have you ever looked at it while its standing next to a Zonda?

Of course not, you were too busy staring at the Zonda

Man, I'd kill to be in that place where a Pagani Zonda and McLaren F1 are next to each other.

I remember watching an episode of Top Gear where the Zonda went up against a lambo either Murcielago or Gallardo. It straight tore the lambo up.

guess when you're making a car as bad ass as that, you don't have to change much between 5 years... the thing looks pretty much the same as the old one... just has 19"s, and maybe some other things.
