Hey guys,

I was coming home today from Houston to Austin and the weather was horrible. Rain was coming down so hard, even the fastest setting for the wipers was barely doing the job. I could barely see in front of me and had to drop at one point to 20 mph. Long story short, some dumbass somewhere dropped a small metal pipe and I was fortunate enough to have ran over it, by the time I saw it, I could not veer and had to eat it and run over it.

I got home safely and wanted to see if there was any damage. Sure enough, the rear quarter panel was a little dented and some paint chipped off. Its nothing that cant be fixed, but I was curious to find out if this could be fixed with paintless dent repair? Is this something that can wait to be fixed? Or should I fix it asap because the area where the paint came off can become rusted?

Ouch! Don't let it stay like that too long, because as you said, it will start to rust.

Only the dent can be fixed with paintless dent repair, not the damaged paint work.

You shouldn't wait to repair it unless you cover the exposed metal with primer in the meantime; rust can start overnight.

BTW, the repair would be covered by comprehensive insurance since the damage was caused by a loose object on the roadway, although you probably would have to pay your deductible.

Ummm. Don't know if I want to drop a 500 deductible :-\ how much is this work going to be? A guesstimate? I'm taking the car tomorrow to my friend that does body work and see what he tells me.

turns out, it was worse than I thought. Went to get an estimate, going to be at least 2500k to fix it. Mostly labor and paint. Not replacing any parts, just a lot of work to fix it
Probably wait til income tax and fix it. I have temporary paint over the metal part so it wont get rusted.

That sounds much too high for just that rear quarter.

Get two or three estimates from different shops that do body work for new luxury car dealers.

$2,500 seems absurd. That's new suspension, wheels, and an a-spec kit. Id go get some more estimates.

That's an astronomical price to fix that little chip. Shouldn't cost more than $300 at a honorable body shop. Less than an hour to take out the ding and work the metal back to shape, then some bondo and paint. The paint is the most expensive part.

As an example, I got a quote to fix chips/paint my entire front bumber and rear bumper, including blending up to the rear doors and trunk (I have white pearl paint) for $1220

@PDR when the dent has taken off the paint.

Call insurance.. that's going to be an expensive fix. Or buy a hammer, a couple of forms and a spray can.

$2,500 is a lot, but to fix it properly, it will cost a lot... well.. not $2.5k

Like I said, make a claim, take it to a reputable shop that will fix it the right way and not cut costs. You're out the deductible.

My car got its first door ding last thanksgiving in a hard to reach spot on the door. $150 later it was as if it had never existed.

With that said, PDR is not the route to go here. Most of the cost is the fix the paint. The dent is a minor fix compared to the paint. $2500 is dumb but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up costing close to $1k to do it right.

I usually like replacing parts over fixing old ones but I had to have the rear quarter replaced and its major surgery, definitely not something you want to do to the car.

I have a ding in my fender from some dingus. It was an angled parking lot and the asshole opened his suv door into my fender.

Definitely fixable by PDR.. but I've given up already.

I'm more upset that I found out after the fact. I would have drawn a penis on his hood with brake fluid.
