Question Any suggestions for buying pre-owned G1 MDX-2002-2006 ??

I am beginning the process of searching for a pre-owned MDX between the years of 2002-2006. I estimate mileages will be between 90,xxx and 140,xxx in the price range that I am considering. And I would prefer a Touring or better version, but will take a Base if its right.

I have never been an MDX owner before, but have liked the MDX ever since it came out.

I have owned Honda's and love the quality of the company, but really want to find the right MDX.

I am looking for any suggestions regarding what to look for and what to avoid in a pre-owned MDX. I also need some guidance on what the critical components that need replacing in these mileages, such as timing belts, shocks, paint issues, power accessories that might fail, etc.

Thanks again for any thoughts or ideas you may have.

-look for trans or torque converter issues

-A/C operation, leaks, compressor condition

-oil pump/oil pan leaks

-axle seal leaks

-Inner CV boot leaks both sides

-front and pass side motor mounts

-lower control arm bushings splitting

-radiator trans line fitting for corrosion

-front and rear shocks leak

-cat convertor (rear) go bad

-alternator goes bad

Basically these model MDX's trannys can go out at anytime and really at no warning.
So its best to find one that already had a trans done.

If you need any help let me know

Thanks

ECRD,
Thanks for the info. I appreciate the list of things.
I will plan to purchase an extended warranty, which may cover some of these things after purchase, but of course I don't want to buy a vehicle with these items wrong from the beginning.
I know motor mounts, transmissions have been mentioned before, but I didn't know about the torque converter and other issues of the suspension mentioned.
I hope to find a one owner vehicle without collision damage as well, but regular maintenance is always a key I look to.
Thanks again!

I'd avoid any model before '04 because of transmission issues.

2005

I bought a 2005 MDX with very low miles (55K). Lucked out with an older lady driver, who--according to CarFax--maintained it well.
If you know what you want and stay current with the various Websites, you'll know a good deal when you see it. I think the 05s and 06s are very nice, and you should be able to find one with 80K, possibly less.

Thanks, I seem to hear that from people with Honda and Acura as well as owners.

I had the beginnings of a transmission problem with 98 Accord at about 120,000 miles.

Wow sounds like a real find. I haven't seen many Gen 1 MDX of any year so far that are very well maintained. I am surprised dealers don't clean and detail these cars often enough. If the mechanicals are sound and well maintained, I have found the exterior or interior to be neglected. I know they are out there, but the less cared for seem to be priced as though they are worthy of Certified vehicles, and they are not.
I am beginning to think a luxury badge like Acura and Lexus (while great cars) often get the 'benefit of the doubt' and get a higher price even if they haven't been given any TLC. There is more to good ownership than getting an oil change every 5,000 miles. Cleaning your car goes a long way in my humble opinion. When I see a dirty car, I wonder what else is wrong under the hood, and everywhere else.

Thanks for the reply!
