Both are fine cameras.

But first, $900 for a "USED" D70 (assuming not D70s, but even then this can still apply) is too much money.

This really comes down to the user.

I know canon and I have EF lenses, so my choice would be the xt. If you like Nikon and nikon lenses, then go with the Nikon.

Both cameras offer a great bang for the buck.

If I were you, I'd probably find a nice 20d Canon for around $1,000-1,200 dollars. The frame feels more substantial and the added speed of 5/fs v. 3/fs is a huge plus.

What you need to do is shoot with both cameras and see what you prefer.

Likewise, it doesn't matter what body you have, it comes down the the glass you put on the front of it as well as the person hitting the shutter.

With that said, you could look into a used Canon 10d for that matter for around $500-600 dollars.

Best,

Dustin

If this is your first SLR, you probably wouldn't benefit from the added features of the 20D over the XT. Buy the XT and put your money towards glass and other accessories like a flash or a good tripod.

If the choice were Canon Rebel XT v. Nikon D50, I am more than certain I would go with the XT.

The D50 always felt a little too small. No doubt it is a fine camera. Again just personal preference.

I have do doubt, however, that you will enjoy the Rebel XT very much. Don't chimp out on lenses though. Make sure you buy the plastic fantastic EF 50 1.8 II for $79.00 as one of your first lenses.

That's what I did, you still get a great camera with lots of potential. Once you start buying good EF glass, no matter what Canon you upgrade to in the future you will still have good lenses.
