With the 2nd Gen TL's getting some serious age and miles on them after 10+ years.......tell us how long that ya owned your TL. It's definitely a love-hate relationship as most longer term commitments normally are.

So, who has had their TL from day one off of the dealership's floor ? Original owners hold a vast amount of experience and loyality with our cars and should be acknowledged for their steadfast ownership of a somewhat problematic and tempermental vehicle.

Took my 02 TL-S out of the dealership in Dec 2001 (Single Owner )... Don't know the exact day but it was my Xmas Gift. I have it for almost 13yrs now.


What sold me was that it was a Honda Underneath and I knew them for their reliability which is ironic because of the trans issue. It took 6 years and 114K for my first trans to go out in 2008 which then lead me to investigate about the trans issues and eventually discover this forum. Pretty much aside from the Trans the car hasn't give me any problems, Its easy to work on and pretty reliable when everything is well maintained.


That's my beloved story with my TL-S.

02 TL-P, September 2001. Original owner. Now at 98,000 miles.

Second replacement transmission. First under warranty when it acted up at around 35k. Second was under warranty in 2008 when I took it in and said "maybe" it was acting up - hoping I could claim some assistance if it actually did fail after the extended warranty expired. They replaced it saying they found no shifting issues but it was a bit noisy. I suspect they either knew it was a suspect transmission, or the shop needed work.

Biggest out of pocket expenses have been the CD changer and 2 engine mounts along with the timing belt change.

The longer I have owned it, the more I have learned to like it for the rock-solid reliability. So far. And it's much more dependable than our 2006 BMW 3 series.

^ Same here.. Jesus those Bimmers.. I have done more to my Wife Bimmer in 4yrs of ownership (2nd Owners) than all I did to my TL in 12yrs. One will think that BMW do quality cars but from experience the Japanese do Better.

And Seabright, even though your car is relatively young in miles......you've stuck by the old gal and it'll definitely pay off down the road, IMO.

Bought my '03 TL-S in 2010, 3rd owner. Fortunately for me the past 2 owners took GREAT care of the car, both old guys. The brought it to the Acura dealership for everything - oil changes, and any service. 2nd owner had the "trans overhaul" on the CarFAX, 7 mo. after I bought it that trans went out, replaced it and 2 years later it started crapping out and did the AV6 swap a couple weeks ago Other than going through about 5 sets of rotors I haven't had any major issues. Love my car and love this site!

Got my 99 TL-P in march 2011, as a graduation gift from grandma, who bought it new. She took it to Acura for everything, including the transmissions (yes, multiples). When I took ownership, the odo read 177k, now it's at 225k. Driven it across the country and back, poked around phoenix for a year in it, even did the full Apache trail in it, from Tortilla Flats to Roosevelt and back, suffering only a few sheared plastic in pan clips. Aside from maintenance and mild mods I've made, I've only needed to replace a cv axle, an altetnator, and a battery!

I Love my Acura, born and raised as a die hard Mopar guy all my life, and this has been by far the best car I've ever had the pleasure of owning as far as comfort and reliability. Also love this site! I honestly don't know what I would do without the knowledge and respect presented here, and I thank you all!!

We were young and in love.

We've had good and bad; a few surgeries...
Sometimes high maintenance...

In the end, the 220k miles have been unforgettable.

Original owner of a 1999 TL. This is the model with the 4sp auto. I still have the car and drive it almost every day. It's got 257,000+ miles on it. Still has the original transmission, shocks, struts.

So far the only thing broken is the driver's heated seat. Never bothered to fix that. Over the years, I've had to get fixed: IACV, climate control hot/cold modulator, new hood struts, and one new coil pack. As with all the cars I currently have, I plan to drive it until it falls apart. The clear coat is gone and the paint is beginning to crack but from a distance it still looks very good. Unfortunately this car is parked outside so the paint issues will only accelerate. My garage is also taken up by a 2008 RDX and a 2006 RL, both of which look brand new and are in pristine condition with absolutely no dents or dings.

Bought the car at 112k~ and I just rolled over 188k yesterday. So far I've replaced both CV shafts, calipers, rotors(x5 sets), both upper control arms, both wheel bearings(x2 sets), all the bushings and a battery. I also have the busted driver seat heater, meh..

At 188k I feel that I maybe shouldn't invest in any performance parts, besides the couple I've already done - drop in K&N filter (I would like CAI) and NGK plugs. Are any of you guys around this mileage and still buying performance parts? Some DC headers would be lovely....

Bought it new in April 2001 - 115k miles later still going strong, though on it's 2nd transmission which is my only 'big' expense for the car.

Yeah, lots of guys buy these cars and mod them.....even with what would seem to be higher mileage.
The key is to have a solid well maintained car and then go from there. With your recent "AV6" swap, your TL has plenty more of spirited life left in it. Our motors are nearly bulletproof and now that ya have the tranny replaced with an AV6, I'd say go with your gut and let the good times roll. .........

I JUST put on brand new Goodyear rubber all the way around too.. I'm just starting to get a little bit of rust peeking through the paint around the bottom of the driver door, sadly.. I got a $500 quote to get rid of it, but that seems ridiculous...

Clean out the door's bottom drain vent holes and spray some WD40 inside the lower door panels.

So a little history so you can understand why I bought it and what I do. I bought my first Honda in 1994, it was a 1986 CRX Si. My friend had a 1994 Civic 4d that I just loved the way it ran. I sold the CRX a few years later with 169K on the clock, for a profit. I then bought a 1992 Civic Si, Greddy turbo and a custom paint job (supersonic blue pearl) that won me best of show 1998 NOPI national at Moroso Motorsports Park. I then bought a 1996 Integra GSR, and a shitload of mods later including a JRSC @ 13lbs, sold it for a profit to a guy on Ebay from New Orleans. I then bought a 1991 EF hatchback, bought a JDM B16A2 with LSD and did the swap in my garage (as well as a full Integra interior). Custom turbo and again sold for a profit on Ebay. I hope you are starting to see a pattern. Then my next car was a 1998 Prelude, all motor mods, blew a rod just over 100K (I had done the least mod wise and it died on my way to work). I was done with Honda's. I started buying VWs, had 2 GTI's, and then a Jetta (GLI) which at 90K miles I traded in on a New KIA Optima Turbo (because it was a POS). I loved the power and room of the KIA, but nearly a divorce and a DUI later, I found my self the proud owner of a 99 4runner with 179K on the clock (back into Japanese quality). Long (too late right) story short, the 4Runner was totaled last month by a texter who failed to see me stopped at red light. Wanting no car payments, I looked for M46 3series, 2003+ accords and with only $6k to spend, bought my 2003 TLS for a mere $4800. Accords are going for more, and don't have the options. I do not understand why the TLs have such low resale, but I am not complaining as I love my S. I have already done a K&N, Headers, HID fogs and a few other things. With only 144K on it, she's gonna last a while. The previous owner had ALL the work done at the dealer, including a full tranny service at 138K. Happy to be back in the Honda camp, my Prelude was bought used, so there is no telling what the previous owner did to cause that rod to blow, and after my ugly stint with fixing VWs for a few years, I am happy to be back in a car that reminds me of my KIA (a car 10 years newer), is paid off, and I don't feel like I have to worry about it leaving me on the side of the road.

Gotta wish ya all the best with coming back to Honda products.
Hopefully ya won't have the opportunity to realize why our 2nd Gen TL's are such a bargain in the used car market. All I can say is that with the money ya saved, keep it in a safe place for buying an "AV6" donor tranny. Ya gotta roll with the dice on our TL's weak original tranny's. Good Luck !!!

Got mine back in 2007 when I was 16. So I have had it for 7 years now. Second owner and was my first car. Paid $12,000 with 42K miles on it. Now has 170,000 miles. Still own my TL but it is not my DD anymore ever since I got my 2014 Chevy SS Sedan with the big boy LS3. LSMafia Baby!!!!

bought mine around 3-4 yrs ago from original owner. the couple was in there 60s lol. It had 270km on it when i got it as of today she's got 303km motor still running super strong. only issue is this subframe rust

Well I currently have a love/hate relationship with mine but here's the quick story.
I bought it from the 1st owner who took care of it at the dealer where it was purchased at. She bought it in end of 2002 year as a 2003 model already. It's a Type S to begin with. I love the way that it's treating me good so far. Engine and transmission are original which surprises me. I bought it in September 2012 with 123,300 on the odometer. Now it's July 2014 which is coming close to 2 years of owning it. I hate myself for some stupid decisions I have done when it comes to it. Was supposed to do the 6 speed project and comes down to it that I sold all of the parts. Recently tried putting it up for sale and had low ball offers and rejected them.. Crazy thing is my dad owns a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero from the dealer the year it came out and 12 years later it's having problems and the TL-S is an 03 and knock on wood no issues besides general maintenance. I'm figuring of keeping her going and doing the 6mt and fu*k it!

Purchase mine in January 2007, certified pre-owned w/37K miles.
Just crossed 138K miles this week. Transmission replaced by Acura in January 2010. One of the most reliable cars I have owned which still runs and looks like new.

Bought mine August 1, 2012 with 201,000 miles on the clock. It just rolled over to 210,000 miles recently.

Two years later I've only had to get the timing belt service done, along with the oil pump seal. It could use motor mounts, though. I plan on getting that done soon.

The paint is starting to go, but I don't think I'm going to be bothered to fix it.

I treat it like it should be treated!!
Rarely do I ever test her limits!

I jus do regular maintenance for the engine/tranny!
Regularly check/change my fluids...
check for leaks..
just minor maintenances to keep her running and in return she keeps on going...

Looking to do my Water pump/timing belt etc and replace my engine mounts soon though!

Dad bought my WDP 02' TL-P in August of 2001. I grew up getting driven around in that thing. In 2009 when I was 17 he gave me the option to buy it dirt cheap and I did, had it ever since. Had ups and downs and I've hated it and loved it but looking back on some of my favorite memories it was always involved. I hope to make many more too with only 124k on the odometer and it's 2nd tranny.

Got my 99 TL in February of 99 after waiting 4 weeks. No haggle price just get in line and when the next Silver one comes in with your name on it we'll call.
15 years, 245k and a new warranty trans at 107k (after 7 years no less!) and she still runs great. Changed the trans fluid often and only been running Amsoil since switching from Mobil-1 about 2 years ago. Last (2nd) valve check at 180k and all were within spec with only ONE exhaust at the loose side of the range! pretty impressive.

Purchased 2012 with 186K miles on the odometer from the previous owner who purchased it brand new in 2000. Car was in rough shape, but drove great, so we picked it up and I started bringing her back to life.

220K+ miles and still runs strong! Other than the trans rebuilds, I have no complaints with this car. Going on 15 years young and all electrical components still work (except for the heated seats) and that shows these cars were built to last.
