New member - new Acura TL - question

Hi All,
New to the forum but not to Acura. Had a 1989 Integra that I bought new and drove for about 8 years. Now, I've picked up on a 1999 Acura TL 3.2 for my daughter. Know the seller and the car has 96K pampered miles on it. Well cared for - motor mounts replaced, timing belt and water pump, etc. No tranny issues that I could find in a lengthy test drive. Should I leave well enough alone or give it a 3 quart drain and fill? The last one was at 67K so it's due. I'm assuming Honda Z1 is the drink of choice yet? Anything else I should check out?

Welcome to the forum!

Honda no longer makes their ATF-Z1. They've replaced it with a fluid called ATF DW-1. As to my understanding, the DW-1 is synthetic, where as the Z1 was not. The DW-1 is compatible with the Z1, so there should be no worries there.

As for the fluid, what kind of condition is it in? 30,000 miles is about the service interval (depending on who you ask) for the transmission fluid. To take an accurate reading, ensure the fluid is up to operating temperature and ensure the vehicle is shut off, and parked on a level surface.

If you're going to replace the fluid, you might as well go the extra mile and replace the bypass spin on transmission filter. Chances are this was never replaced. It is cheap and easy to do. Here is a link to the DIY thread:

You should also think about seafoaming the car to remove carbon deposits that have built up over the 15 years the car has been on the road:

You also might want to change the interior cabin air filter. These are also overlooked more times than not. Here is a great video on how to do it:

Lastly, ensure that your daughter always uses premium gasoline. 91 octane or higher. It really isn't that much more expensive than regular gasoline and keeps the engine running very smooth. Welcome again, and congrats on your purchase!

reg as owner with acura care 1 800 382 2238x5 ask if all recalls are done
2 main ones for 99 are ignition switch electrical part- which will fail again and easy diy
and the single egr port intake manifold clogs, so recall cleaned the passage and installed a smooth thing in the port/hole but it all still needs recleaning every 75kmiles and not found in maintenance schedule! another diy

dw1 is semi synth from what I read, 99 4 speed has a different capacity, ck owner book for sure - free download at www.owners.acura.com
need cars VIN for both those places

because the atf has been changed it should be fine with a changeover to the new stuff
only cars with high miles never been changed atf have issues
