The download manual on this site has a good description of the process. Doesn't look terrible, but no walk in the park either.

Are you sure your heater core is leaking? You want to be absolutely certain before undertaking this job, as it requires discharging AC charge and removal of evaporoator also.

I keep smelling this odor in the compartment area and can't locate the source, and after talking to a friend who's a mechanic he suggested that it may be the heater core. I will keep looking for more evidence that this is the issue before i attempt to do it, if I can hold off until it gets warm again that would be fine.

What else should I look for, there was no fluid on the floor or anything.

Just went to the store and as soon as I pulled out of my driveway the smell came in, thought it would only do it when the car was warm, guess not. Does this sound like it's the heater core to you or are you thinking something else. Also, if it is the heater core and it goes while i'm driving will it stop running or will I just loose heat?

i made a post on this but nobody helped. i have same issue. your friend is probably right- there is mildew in your AC vents and evaporator core. i purchased a product called Klima-cleaner (my profile has a photo) but still haven't got around to using it because I can't seem to find this evaporator core.

Almost a year ago I was loosing about a cup of radiator coolant a month. After several months I noticed that the floor mat under the drivers right foot was wet. It was coolant and I suspected a heat core leak. I estimated heater core replacement at $1500-$2000 because it is a labor intensive task and parts are expensive. Unwilling to spend that kind of money on a 12 year old car, I decided to hunt for the leak myself. With the service manual's help and several hours of labor, I found a leak at a hose clamp. See picture below - taken from the drivers side floor looking up after full disassembly.



Here is a pic of what the car looked like after full disassembly.



I tightened the hose clamp and am still loosing coolant but at a much slower rate. Unless it begins leaking significantly, I'm planning on running it to its grave without further repair.

Here's what it looks like after re-assembly. Not bad for $200K+!

looks great, but also alot of work!!! now i'm not sure what is going on, because the other day when I first started the car, the smell came in and when I got out and went to the front of the car I could actually see the smoke comming out of the front grill so now i'm thinking may be an exhaust leak. I may just have to take it to the shop to get it diagnosed although I don't want to do that.
