Removing Resonator on Stock exhaust (Summary Post #1 & #1811)

I was planning on doing the 2.5" but I have gotten sick yet again. I'm pretty miserable, just moping around the house for now. Hopefully I'm better soon and feel like doing the 2.5" piping.

OK. I had the resonator removed and not the mid-muffler. It sounds really nice. Very suddle and only noticeable under medium to heavy acceleration. Don't know what the mid-muff would sound like removed but I am happy.
Worth note... Make sure that your shop installs stainless steel straight pipe and not standard steel or aluminized metal. I went by Midas and one other local place in Denver and neither even stocked stainless.

IT's done! It's done! Got my Magnaflow mufflers and resonator installed yesterday. Removed the stock resonator, installed the 12640 resonator/muffler and the mid muffler was removed. Installed 14362 mufflers and retained stock tips. They were brought out about 1". Sounds like a G35/350Z. Under hard throttle, sounds real deap from about 2200-3000. Wife hasn't ridden in the car yet. I think the only thing is this new resonator looks really big (O.D.) wise, hangs a little lower. The guy charged $160 to do all the work and replace some straight pipe with stainless. He said he could fabricate a cat-back exhaust in stainless a lot cheaper than Comptech. He also said that he could develop downpipes (what everyone is calling headers) a LOT cheaper than what is being talked about now. I will see if I can work extra and have him make me a set late summer/early fall.

Installed my AEM CAI last night. A buddy and I took about 2-1/2 hours to install. Directions were lacking in a couple of areas. But OMG! I put my foot into it, and I have an eargasm! Harder to tell what sounds better-the intake noise at WOT, or the engine/exhaust lighting up!

Had my mid-muffler and resonator removed today. Sounds great. I have a friend with a GX35. I think my TL sounds just like it now. Sidenote... The mid-muffler is actually a resonator as well. Cheapest mod I have done so far!

I did remove both and replaced both with straight pipe. I get about half a second of rasp at the apex of the first gear band just before it changes to second gear. It doesn't sound bad though, just throaty.

I just got this done today. Mine is actually pretty noticeable. Med to hard acceleration, and it just gets louder. Under slight acceleration, its really quiet. It's deffinitely noticeable though even inside the cabin with the windows up. Looked at the welds to make sure it was done right and does not seem to have a leak, so not sure why its kinda loud. no whistling either.
Gettin used to the volume, but I think some of you guys complaining that you want more volume would like it.

Did you just remove the mid-muffler or the resonator as well?

One on the right for me
you can call them whatever you want actually, it seems that the only agreed upon term to use for a piece of the exhaust system is muffler...and it applies univ. to only the rear most sound dampening piece.
i always thought the mid muffler had less of an effect on rasp and was more for tone. i bet the TL sounds pretty good with both of them out and just the rear mufflers in use

Based on setups that people on here have been trying out, I narrowed it down to that if you keep the stock rear mufflers, and remove both the resonator (round piece) and mid-muffler (small square muffler), you will have a slight rasp. Someone had that done and put back his resonator the the rasp was gone, but it was a bit quieter.
I based my setup on that, and wanted something a bit louder, but did not want any rasp at all. So I took out the mid-muffler and the resonator, but replaced the stock resonator with one thats a bit more free-flowing. (Magnaflow)
The sound I have now IMO is perfect. I have no rasp at any rpm. Its noticeable, and very sporty. Similar to a G35, but a lot smoother sounding. Luxury sport is where its at. =)

Just did this mod, had the mid muffler removed, 35 bucks, sounds fantastic, a bit more growl, definately has a nice tone, no rasp, no drone. To describe it verbally I would say it has an understated G35/350Z tone. More refined, less blatty.
You guys aren't going to swear at me if I don't post a sound clip are you?
