Hi All,

Ive done some searching for specfics on this particular question i have, but couldnt come up with much. I know how the install goes, what i need etc. And honestly, i cant spend hour over hour continuing to search.

i recently just purchased a new rear license plate peice (housing with reverse lights) which includes the 2008 OEM backup camera still on it, and going to install on my 04 TL.

My question is, has anyone used the 07-08 OEM camera and integrated into the 2004-2006 Nav Drive? with aftermarket cameras they plug right into a Navtool or dom's unit, but this camera has the factory plug which connects to the 07-08 nav Drive. The 2004-2006 didnt have this plug option. Can i use the factory harness and split the wires for power and connect to the doms/navtool?

any experience or insight into this is a big help.

I dont have the part yet unfortunately. It's being shipped right now.

Its probably just a matter of cutting off the oem connector and putting a composite video plug on the end and running the power/ground wires. I dont know how its setup but it should be easy.

That's what I was thinking. Guess I'll find out. I know someone's had to have done this before.

This is what wire goes to what,

White wire- power for camera 8V
Red wire -ground for camera
Yellow wire- video ground
Black wire- video signal
Grey wire - shield
Green wire - control signal cameral

So I guess fuse power wire with appropriate 8V fuse and spliced into 12V power wire for the navtool. ground to ground. The video ground and video signal to the composite video connector. That plugs into the navtool "video in" port. And the green signal wire to the reverse light wire. So for the reverse camera to be displayed on the nav screen the navtool must be switched on everytime.

Sounds good but if the camera only accepts 8V your going to need a voltage regulator on the line to bring down the 12V accordingly. A typical 9V regulator should work as they have a voltage drop depending on which one you use.

So with this setup, the camera wont kick on when put the car in reverse? i would think that it would if the Navtool is hooked up to a constant power source?

Oh yeah you're right there is a reverse sensing wire on the navtool. It
Gets hooked up to the reverse signal wire, so I guess those two get hooked up together to the reverse light wire. That should power the navtool and oem camera when in reverse. My bad, it's just that I forgot about it since my car (07) already has the oem backup camera.

with my 2006 there is a reverse trigger wire already at the navigation unit so u didn't need to run another wire to reverse light. this may have been done in preparation for the 2007 that came with the reverse camera. ill need to confirm if the 2004 has it. one less wire to run is always good !

darknight- are you interested in the ability to activate your reverse came whenever you want with a switch? while still maintaining normal reverse triggered operation? I can provide a diagram if you are.

It does have it Roger.

Yeah, Darknight. Roger is correct 04 nav has the reverse signal wire at the DVD drive unit it's on the 8pin blk/wht connector. It's square shaped with 7 wires. The wire you're looking for there is in pin #5. Its the green wire.

I just tried to hook up the stock back up cam to an aftermarket LCD, doesn't wanna work. Put a component connector on the black and yellow wires, left all else connected and Im not getting anything. Im spliced in right before the connector on the trunk lid on the camera side.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Hey Guys, sorry for the delay. been real busy and havent had a chance to get back on. Thanks alot for all the feedback, i havent got the camera in yet, but will be jumping back to that in a week or so. In the meanwhile i ran into another problem.

So i mentioned i picked up the entire garnish with the OEM camera on it from a 2008 TL base with Navi. My car is a 2004 with Navi, which they didnt put the cameras on until 2007.

I thought the garnish would be 100% compatitable. the clips match up, the 4 bolts holding it in line up, however the 2 upper bolts for the license plate (which are welded to the trunk) must be placed just about a half an inch lower on the 2008 models. I had no idea, and i dont think many people had to get a replacement(my back up light is also cracked - part of the reason i am replacing)!!!

The 2 holes for the bolts on the garnish are not in the same place as the '04. The 2004 are about half an inch higher than the 2008, so i cant get the new piece to sit in flush because of them. This only leaves me with 2 options. Sell and buy an 04 and do an aftermarket camera, or customize the 2008 panel. I was thinking of taking a dremel to the existing holes until the bolt fit thru. Nobody would see this as the plate then covers it up. This would be the cheapest route as i got the part for $100, and thse panels are about $400 everywhere else ive found them. Any body have any other ideas or suggestions? please let me know ASAP
