Backseat head rest button

hi guys,

so when i tried to put the backseat head rests back to their resting positions by pressing the button on the side, the spring shot out with the button.

after fidgeting with it for a few minutes i just put it in and lowered the headrest. im sure when the headrest comes up again, the springs will fly out. anybody else have this issue? or know how to "lock" the button in there? i tried turning the button but it was difficult to rotate.

I have a related issue. On mine the Headrest button got stuck.
So I can't lower the headrest.
The dealer told me this is a common problem with TL's. He said they can take care of it in 30-45 min.

There's a TSB for this.

Good luck.

I just had mine fixed! I would give them advance notice when you take it in for an oil change so they can have the parts on hand. No downtime for you

I don't know if it was just the buttons or the whole heardrests but the invoice says replaced headrests. I took the car to the dealer and picked it up later in the day, and have had no trouble since.

SkC - I almost bought an 08 TL-S but couldn't find a 6MT in a color I wanted. I'm sure I would have been very happy with it, but I do love my SH-AWD.

I'm interested in hearing your impressions of your 08 vs your new TL.

you made the right choice.

i love the 2010 6mt a lot more because it handles way better, is faster, and more luxurious. the tl-s would slip through the whole first gear but the awd catches the road and goes almost instantly. the shawd interior is much more luxurious, but i did like the tl-s red ambient lighting. the awd is bigger which is great, but too bad the back can only really seat 2 people.

the tl-s is a great car, and i probably would be happy with it too. but the shawd is just better. i missed the tl-s for the first few weeks, but that's all gone now :P

Same thing happened to one of my rear headrests. I saw this thread and decide to try the rear headrests just for the fun of it. Sure enough, button and spring shot right out, and I can't put it back in the hole. My other rear headrest seems okay for now.

Guess I'll be taking the TL to the dealership. Does anyone know if they will replace 1 or both headrests/buttons?

Not the 6MT at least. Fastest 0-60 for the 6MT TL-S in any of the tests I reviewed when I was considering buying one was 5.5. Both C&D and R&T have logged 5.2 on the 6MT SH-AWD. The automatic may be another story, but I haven't seen any 5AT data for the TL-S.

That's the 5AT time, I believe. Check the R&T and C&D road test summaries - they each got 5.2 with the 6MT. A little surprising they got identical times.

I am the kind of weird customer my wife laughs about who visually inspects the car he buys front to back, top to bottom (and I do mean bottom; I assume the push-up position to get a look-see under the car), and I manipulate everything in sight that a driver or passenger would normally touch.

And that's how both rear headrest buttons and their springs popped out while I was picking up my shiny new 2010 TL fwd tech. The salesman had a technician replace both buttons/springs post haste. He said it happened to 3 other TLs he had sold that week.

Is necroposting ok when there is no answer? I haven't seen anyone say they have fixed it themselves.. I just cant see paying Acura for an hour of labor when the parts are dirt cheap.. Especially since I have just put $1400 in maintence into mine. Anyone?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if i broke some massive rule

push your dealer to do it under warranty. that's what i did even though apparently I wasn't covered. No idea how to do it myself.

Tried, he said they will charge me one hour of labor. Asked twice... Maybe when they do the front control arms, I will make him do the buttons. If he wants my warranty work, kick me a perk.

I would like to know how to do it myself as well. I posted a couple years ago that I had found the button in my car, but had not idea what it was. I was later able to point to the headrest buttons.

Typical stealership BS! It probably takes them five minutes to do it.

Good luck.
wow lots of great info here! so since I acquired my 12 TL last week we just discovered the button was missing on right rear headrest. looks like only the 2010 models were covered by warranty? really crazy that this is a known issue. Is there an inexpensive fix for this or a redesigned button you can buy and do yourself?
Thanks
Bill
