Thanks guys! Damn, if it had been a 500+, I'd have needed long-term therapy. Yikes.
Yes, insure your gear. Even if you're anal & take good care of it. I know my brains are a little scrambled, but I never thought I'd be distracted enough to do anything like that.
I heard from an adjustor yesterday. She said it'll take 3-5 days to get confirmation of replacement costs, then they'll send me a check. Just like that I thought they'd need my receipt or something. Cool.

I almost destroyed my 40D and 17-55mm this weekend.
I was hiking near a river/water fall and slipped on some wet rocks, luckily as I was falling I remembered my camera and fell on my wrist/arm instead
when I checked the camera thou the hood and body got scuffed up, I swear I saw dollar signs flying out of it.

As a point of reference I have a rider on my home insurance for my camera gear - XSi, 100-400mm and other lenses and flash, about $4k. The rider costs $65/year.

^That sounds in line with mine - I want to say it's around $100-$125 for ~$8K worth of gear.

Your both (wndrlst and mizouse) better off then i am. while in africa, i only brought my n5005. riding in the back of a landcruiser, i was snapping shots of a herd of elephant. we hit a bump and my camera smacked me in the chin. it was enough force to crack my lens reflex and the rest of my shots from the trip (~300, unbenknowst to me) had light leak all over them
