My Center Console Gets Really Cold

My Center Console Gets Really Cold
I live in an area that stays warm all year so I practically always run my AC. I've noticed my center console gets REALLY cold when I do. Sometimes there's even condensation on the outside. Touching the aluminum strip on the side is almost like touching a metal freezer. Also, things inside the cup holder get cold. I keep coins in a little cup in one of the cup holders and they are icy cold whenever I have to fish some out. I haven't taken it apart yet but I'm wondering if some AC hose or duct is loose in there. I notice there are two AC vents on the back of the console but I checked and the air seems to come out fine. Has anyone experienced this or are currently experiencing it? If it's not normal I'm guessing it's an easy fix. And except for the occasional condensation, it's really not a critical problem with me. It just seems kind of odd.

LOL. It does at that! Good to know there's nothing wrong. I would have thought there would be some kind of insulation though. Oh well, one less thing to worry about. Thanks!

yep perfectly normal, I love that "feature". keeps my drinks cold haha. I have never gotten any condensation in the center console though. But that really has to do with the humidity in your area I guess

I will be another to say that I love the "feature"
I didnt notice it at first, but I drove about 2 hours into Charlston, and I usually keep my firearm on me at all times.. but on the longer trips Ill leave it in the console. The slide was freezing!

Yes. Put an LED in there for it to actually work. A regular bulb is practically useless.
Edit: Bulb type 2721

Get a pair and replace the one inside the glove box too. You'll need to trim a bit off the bulb to get it to fit. But its a GREAT improvement.

I too love that feature on the center console.. for me it's not so much the drinks. For me is chocolate bars or chocolate in general.. as you know at 90 degrees here in DMV chocolate melts in hot air.. lol... so the center cubby becomes my fridge for the chocolate to keep them cool and not melt... haha..

Found both bulbs. Never realized they were there. Replaced them both with just regular halogen units on my lunch. Total of a full minute. I ordered LED's now too... well cuz, I wanted em. Yay thread!

Same bulb type in the glove box as the center console, yes. That's why it's super convenient to get a pair!
Lol nice. The regular bulbs barely light anything up at all. The LEDs will absolutely make a difference.

You get condensation? Wow your AC must blow really cold or it's really humid over there.
Your console shouldn't get TOO cold, there is a small chance the air is not flowing directly because the ducts are not perfectly aligned and the air is flowing into your console. In case you ever took your console apart, you have to make sure that the ducts reconnect properly. Put your HVAC blower on max and feel the air coming out of the rear vents to make sure that you are getting strong airflow.

I was surprised the first time I noticed it. I was looking for a little air vent in the cup holders, but found none, and it gets even colder in that compartment. A great "feature"

LOL! Probably sucks if you're a hot coffee drinker though...which I'm not.
The condensation thing only happened once or twice that I can remember. We don't get that much humidity in Hawaii. It's mostly coo but it could have been a little humid on the days it happened. I remember the first day I got it, my wife noticed and said, "No wonder you got such a good deal. There's something wrong with it." Haha! Well even if there was a problem, I wouldn't have regretted buying it over a small issue like that.
I don't think there's anything seriously wrong. It sounds like it's pretty much the same as the others have posted here. If the condensation starts to happen often then I'll open it up and see what's what.
Not the direction I intended it to go but glad to see it wound up helping somebody. I too have to take a look at the console light. I didn't know there was one either.

Must be cheapo bulbs if they flickr. Even though they are a bit pricey, go to Walmart or Autozone and just buy yourself two of the Sylvania/Osram LED 194 bulbs. Quality bulb with perfect color output.

i bought the superbrightled(or whatever they're called) ones. And i got it from them(not ebay).
Spent like $30 for them
definitely not cheap, and they sit in my center console...
Was thinking of trying V-Leds, but i will be upset if i spend another $20 to get the same results.
Well, if it does happen with those, i know it wasn't the bulbs then, i guess.
edit: is Sylvania what you use?
I'm going to Autozone friday to pick up all my brake parts... maybe i'll give them a shot. the yellow stock bulbs are hideous ...
andi i couldn't even find my glove box light!
3G garage time i guess...
