Will be driving down to Houston at the end of July for a long weekend and will be staying in downtown next to the convention center. Any recommendations of things to do (walking distance or driving) with 3 year olds? Also, any recommendations of restaurants and/or bars within walking distance of the convention center?

Discovery green is in walking distance of the George R. Brown Convention center.
it's like a little event venue/park that you can walk around. there's a playground, but may be too HOT for kids to play at the moment.

Looks like there is going to be a Flea Market on July 24th.

along this "strip" there are bars and restaurants

I enjoy MKT BAR along this strip, but I bet any of the bars are going to be pretty cool.

Minute Maid Park is very close by if you wanted to catch a ball game

H-town is sorta like D-town in a sense that any other event/location will be 30-40 mins away. meaning you gotta drive to reach other places

BBVA Stadium is very close by if soccer is more your style!
also, expanding a little bit out past midtown into the medical center, there's the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Houston Zoo. about 10-15 minute drive from Downtown Houston

Houston zoo in the summer is a bit hit or miss. But more towards "miss". Even the animals think it's too damn hot to be out.

There's something called The Color Factory, which might be fun for a 3 year old!

Thanks for the input.

Will for sure check out the Discovery Green since our hotel is next to it. MKT Bar is literally a minute walk from the hotel so could check that place out . Wil probably be going to a concert at Simply Orange Park. Might check out the Zoo or Museum of Natural Science....will keep the kids attention at least for a while.

What exactly is the Color Factory? Like a colorful modern art thing where kids can't destroy stuff?

If you're thinking Zoo/Museum area, the Children's Museum is right in that area. We went to 4 year old birthday party there and my kid had a great time. There's lots of cool stuff for the kids and I have a blast there too whenever we go.

You can go ride the train in Herman Park, near the zoo. Last time we did that, I got to explain to my kid what drugged out bums were on one part of the trip. But in whole, it's pretty neat. Just running around Hermann Park can eat up a few hours; although in the summer it might be miserable.

There's always Galveston for some beach time. There's a smaller, more "quaint" Children's Museum there too. No where near as cool/big as the Houston one, but for the the price, it can be a fun few hours. On the island, there's Schlitterbarn if you want to do water park. And Moody Garden Aquarium which is pretty cool. Or just go to the beach and let the kids eat sand.

idunno, i never heard of the color factory...I just sat on google maps looking for fun stuff for kids.
looks like an "insta" worthy place to take lots of photos. each room has different colors and textures that kids can play in. it's inside away from the heat
