Overheating - Anything special I should know...

It's summer in California, my CL-s probably has the original antifreeze/coolant, i'm running the A/C and the car is starting to overheat just sitting in traffic.

I'm not worried, i'll just replace the coolant this weekend. Is there anything I should know about the coolant type, bleeding the system or otherwise?

FYI - turning on the heat full blast to relieve the overheated state doesn't work on our cars because of the climate control. You have to turn the a/c off, roll the windows down and crank it down to as cold as it will go in order for the fan to think it needs to work harder.

Exactly the opposite of what you would do historically.

How many miles? A bad fan could be the cause, or a stuck TS, or air in the system.
For coolant, a 50/50 mix with some water wetter added is fine.
Being in South FL I run more like 80/20(mostly water) & some water wetter.

I had an overheating problem once when I had my 01 CL one of the hoses had a slow leak in it causing the coolant to seep out. So check all your hoses.

i had the same problem in my 97 cl and it turned out to be my thurmostat was stuck open and the motor for my main radiator fan was shot. My car was over heating only when I had the a/c on because my a/c fan was working overtime but it still wasnt enough to keep the temp down.

Try putting an old tarp down on your driveway and pull you car onto it. Start it and let it idle to see if there is any coolant leaking. Just a thought.

Thanks for the thoughts. My CL has 140k+ on the oldometer. I haven't seen any leaks in the hoses, radiator or otherwise. The fan has started kicking on and running almost immediatley after the car is turned off, so the temp system works. The coolant's probably just old. I was looking more for locations of bleeders, special fluid types - that kind of thing.

I'm also a 50/50 w/ water wetter type of guy. Thanks!

If the fan runs after the car is off them you have air in the system or low coolant.

I didn't get to it this weekend, honey-do list was evidently more important.

I did check the fluid level and the radiator and resevoir were both full. Maybe i'll get to it tonight.
