Replacing stock HID ballast with third party ballast

Hi, I have an '03 CL type S so it comes with stock HID.

Most kits out there seem to be made to convert standard headlights to HID and not necessarily to replace existing HID. I'm wondering what kind of connectors to look for in a new kit.

Has anyone replaced existing ballasts with third party ones and if so what did you buy and how did it go replacing them(I've already taken the bumper and headlight housings out)?

The factory ballasts are fairly decent, but they're a minimum of 11 years old at this point. Add to that the fact they were designed in 1999 and there's definitely room for improvement.

To adapt them to your factory harness you are going to need to cut the plug off of the bad ballast and adapt it to the new ballast. Or, if your new ballast integrates the plug into the housing, then you'll need to do the reverse and adapt the wiring harness on the vehicle side.

That seems fairly easy to do, but what about the electric signal that the ballast is expecting? I don't know much about what kind of signals are used in automotive systems, is everything just 12V on/off?

Replace them w/ Morimotos & you'll never regret. They'll supply you with all the moisture resistant connectors needed. Just splice them from the original power source (for the original ballast) to the new connector. See the link below. After applying GE silicone, put original gasket back on the cap.

I got mine from The Retrofit Source Inc

Thanks for the info, also do you know if our CL type S cars use D2S or D2R, Because the retrofit source only seems to have kits for D2S and I think we have D2R in our cars.

CL uses D2R. Called them up. They have it in stock except it is not on the web.
