Prospective: 2009 TL w/ Tech - What to look out for

Hey guys,

I am taking a look at a 2009 TL w/ Tech Pkg. It has only 36k miles. What should I be on the lookout for?

Going to look at it tonight after work...

Thanks,
Julian

From my own experience, check to see if the torque converter recall has been addressed, and if there are any issues arising from that (though the warranty for this has been extended). Also check the front door speakers to see if they are still playing clearly. And I needed to have a heating element in the driver's seat replaced under warranty, though I don't believe that's too common.

Many have also had paint problems...the "crows feet" issue...plenty of threads here addressing that. And while you're at it, have a look at this thread.

If you buy it, you'll want to look out for speeding tickets. They will happen.

Propeller shaft. Listen for a sound like a tea pot whistling when you take it above 45mph.

Well the car checked out decent but the dealer wouldn't budge on the price of either the car or my ridiculously low-balled trade price so I walked...

I guess I'm just going to have to suffer until my lease is over (I have clearly have commitment issues...) At that time I will either get the 2nd year of the new TLX or the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe!

Honestly I think it's best you passed on it. 09 is the first year from that gen and they had a few issues. If you're buying a used TL I would stick with a 2012+.

Disagree. There are some issues, but for the most part, it is a VERY solid car. I have an '09 with 131K miles on it and have had it since it had 22k.

Can we ask what they were asking and what you offered? I was looking at a 2012 myself when I decided to go new because they were discounting them so heavily that buying used didn't make sense.

09, TL w/ Tech - 36k miles asking was around $22K.
I wanted them to do better on the price in combination with the trade-in because with the low-ball trade in I would have been too upside down on the lease. Plus a handful of other things that pissed me off during the "deal" part.

seems very reasonable. It's a lot of car for that price. I'd go for it. minimal complaints about the car.

Sounds about right if the car is problem free. I'd try to get them to discount another $1k so that at least I am covered if the prop shaft goes bad. It roughly costs $1200 to replace it.

The torque converter is still under warranty for the 2009 model so nothing to worry about there.
