Today marks the day my transmission officially died. I would like to thank ErickUa5 for the SS trick. I was able to survive the week thanks to that trick of skipping 3rd gear. I took it to the transmission shop and they couldn't get it to duplicate what I told them it was doing. They ran some errands and it slammed into 1st coming off the highway. They had to drive 20 mph and were able to make it back without towing. Id also like to thank 3.2 TLc for the possible solutions to fixing what was inevitably going to happen. This trans did have the blue marks and the trans cooler. Trans shop quoted 1595 for a rebuild or 500 to install the AV6. I have a budget of 1500 so hopefully I can find a good trans with low mileage for under 8.

Try to go with the '06>'07 Accord V6 tranny if ya can locate a good low mileage donor to replace your old one with.
$500 for installation is a good deal vs rebuilding the original, unless the shop has a really great warranty on it's work.

Im in Dallas. I found a few decent deals. Nothing too great. They offer 12000 miles 12 month warranty on rebuild. I dont think they will offer anything on the AV6

Don't rebuild it unless you like paying 2x for the same thing..

Rebuilds are like Russian roulette, You might get lucky and have a trans that will last the same time your original lasted or you can get really really unlucky and the trans just might hold half the time < Greatly Depends on the New Clutch Materials.

AV6 Trans is PROVEN, Its a complete fix to our problems since its completely re-designed internally.. Your rebuild will have exactly the same design flaw it had before it died, You are just replacing the damaged clutch packs which worn out prematurely because of this flaw in design..

So:
New Clutch Pack + Design Flaw = Another Dead Trans walking.
New Re-Designed Trans = FIX! FIX!! FIX!!! = INCREDIBLE RELIABLE CAR Like it had to be from factory!

Your welcome GraveDigger, Go for the Av6 dont bother with rebuild or used trans from the same car.

My friends 99 2nd gear just gave up, so I advised him to use the ss to skip 2nd and its worked for him to get around.
So for those suffering slippage on a certain gear just use SS to skip that gear.
If its a 2000 and up and 2nd is slipping your out of luck since 1st and 2nd is controlled by the ECU, unless you accelerate fast enough on 1st for the ecu to let you into 3rd gear after 2nd.

Just did the AV6 swap for under $1500. It's worth it and affordable. And it's an easy swap. Do it!!!! It's worth it!

1999 Acura TL 3.2 trans failed 3 days after buying it from private seller. Rebuilt trans has 60 months/100,000 mi warranty. Shifts fine, but disheartened by this thread.

Hey Letsski.....welcome and don't be totally disheartened.
The '99 TL's actually were much more dependable with their old school 4 speed AT. The 2000 and up 2nd Gen models with the 5 speed tranny had a poor design and tended to fail prematurely.

So, with that being said, ya got the more durable tranny.....along with a 5 year/100K warranty. Chances are that ya won't have the car any longer than that. But, that's a great warranty !!! "3 days later....gotta suck."

Welcome letsski!

The 99 Tl does have the better transmission. The 2000-2003 TLs had major issues not all failed but a large majority did. With that rock solid warranty you shouldn`t have any problems.

Update on my situation. I bought my TL a month and a half ago. The dealership I bought it from tried to wash their hands from my situation. I couldnt get anyone to call me back and they assumed I would go away. After a sales manager assured me he would get me an answer on what they could do by the end of the day and never called, I had enough. I wrote a review about my experience about how bad my experience was and how they would not return my phone calls after trying 3 times to get an answer. That monday the sales director contacted me and informed me they would pay half my bill to fix my transmission. Its still to be seen if they will but needless to say they have begged me to retract my review but I wont be removing anything until after this whole experience is over with.

Gravedigger- that is great that they are going to do that since by now even the 2003's are a few years out of the extended warranty. When I bought my first 2nd gen TL back in 2003 as certified (a 2002 and 1yr old), I hadn't noticed the car had some paint blemishes on the trunk and roof. It had a bunch of pencil head sized pits in the clearcoat as if something had sprayed on the car and etched in. Not really noticeable until under fluorescent lights indoors and then very noticeable. I brought the car back the day after I bought it and they tried everything to ignore me. Anyways, after a week or two of complaining to acura corporate, I finally had to say I would be going to the media with my story. Things changed real quick then and the top half of the car was repainted

Yo gravedigger, I'm also in Dallas (my car is resting in allen) and my trans crapped out this morning. What shops are quoting you these prices? I'm looking at the AV6 swap.

$600 labor plus parts and fluids cost is what I charge people for the swap.

I'm not the cheapest, but I make sure it is done RIGHT!

You should be able to find someone out there to do it reasonably, don't settle for a shop that either charges too much, or knows nothing about the platform.

I just bought a 2001 TL. I called Acura to get the radio code and was told there is an open recall on a 2nd gear issues. I am having it looked at Monday. Are these problem transmissions? Any input would be great.

You may have had the transmission rebuilt or changed, Whats the mileage on your TL?
If theres a rubber hose attached to the fill hole then the recall was already done to it.
Theres a lot of threads regarding the failures of these transmissions and the proven replacement from the Accord V6 06-07.
You should head over there and see what they tell you.

It has 136000 on it. Runs and shifts just fine. I was not looking to invest a trans OH so early in our relationship...... Wish I had found this site before I bought it. I think if it passes at the dealership I will send it on it's way. Shame it's a nice ride.

epiles - I got the trans from LKQ off car-parts.com. It was cheaper on carparts then LKQ site but it cost about 1000 after tax. You might be able to find cheaper somewhere else. You probably can find a transmission shop by you. The one Im going to in Garland is taking forever on it. They're only charging 500. They had it a week and it hasnt moved since they parked it. If your not in a rush they might be suitable.

Update - I got my car back. They removed it and replaced it within 5 hours. The only differences is the power steering and the shift points. Neither is a bad thing but its just something that is slightly different. Hopefully this is the last time I mess with the tranny ever other than maintenance.

Yeah it was a mess. The guy from the tranny shop wasnt there to rewrite my invoice to have the amount of the transmission on there so I had to go with the receipt I had. They paid the labor the 500 labor so I cant complain
