02 Stock TL-S 5AT vs 05 RX-8 4AT with Mazdaspeed Intake
I raced my friend's stock 2005 RX-8 4AT with a Mazdaspeed Intake (CAI I believe) with my 2002 stock TL-S 5AT. It was 10pm at night and there was no traffic in front of us as we were sitting at this intersection, waiting for the lights to turn green. My friend looked over and asked if I wanted to run, I said sure why not, as I wanted to see what his newly installed intake would do. We both knew I was going to win despite his new intake since stock his RX-8 is rated at 197hp at the crank. Also his 4AT and lack of torque means he really had no chance. Lights turned green, he got the jump, while I spun the tires a bit for 2 seconds or so. But I pulled hard on him, not car lengths, but bus lengths. I only turned off VSA and used SS mode, so the car shifted at 6000rpm in 1st gear and I was too busy looking at the mirror so forgot to shift to 3rd gear (bouncing off the rev limiter..ouch). But it didn't matter, I won by a large margin, it wasn't really a race..really..lol. So after that we talked for a bit, and he told me he turned off whatever stability/traction control system his car had, he brake-torqued to 2500rpm or so, he shifted at the redline, but the funniest thing was.he didn't go WOT, just 3/4 ...... I didn't bother to brake-torque (well I did, to 1000rpm only though as I didn't think i had to do that to win...). He said his car is never going to beat mine, and I told him to get the 6MT model or turbo it. lol.

lol, yea, seriously, I think my 133hp 2.2L I4 Camry has more torque at low rpm (below 3000rpm). But his car pulls pretty well from 5000rpm, but still not enough to challenge us (for the AT model at least), and by the time it's at 5000rpm, I would be long gone. haha

I don't really have a preference right now, AEM or Injen would be fine, I think I'd get some XS headers first though as that mod alone would free up a lot of power for the money.

any less restrictive exhaust would free up a lot of power and would probably sound good. i would like to get an exhaust but i dont want anything loud..btw check out the TL in the new Traction mag, i just picked it up

Actually exhaust doesn't do much for power in our car...sadly...like a few whp at most. Yea, I saw that TL on the 3rd gen forum, some guy scanned the whole article!

Yea, I mean, that's what I've heard most of the time, I mean it's no match compared with some headers, which many have claimed to gain around 25whp....$80 +shipping for XS headers and you get around 25whp...but for sure, there are more benefits with the exhaust, such as the sound.

Headers are only $80? Damn, I'm jealous. I've got $1500 into the J-pipe back.
There was a mechanic at the dealership who said he had an '02 S with just headers and that it was 300 at the crank. I didn't have the heart to tell him that in reality his car isn't quite 250 crank, in stock form, so maybe 275 if he's lucky. Crank numbers don't mean much though. What do those dyno, around 200-205?

It's about 200whp for the 2nd gen TL-S, 212whp for the 3rd gen TL 5at (you can find the dyno plot at TOV), and 220whp for the 3rd gen 6MT (again, this can be found at TOV, but this run, the car wasn't running at its best condition if I remember correctly). The $80 headers are actually a replica of the comptech ones, those ones are like $1000. But the $80 ones are fairly good for the price and most people don't have any problem with them.
I think 300hp at the crank is a stretch, may be 290hp if you make many assumptions, such as using the old standard (ie, assume when stock, the car has 260hp). But like you have said, crank numbers don't really mean much.
Here is a link to a guy with headers and spacers:
https://acurazine.com/forums/audio-video-electronics-navigation-22/rattle-rear-deck-174522/
As you can see he's making 225-226whp, and the moderator said his numbers could've been higher in better conditions. Spacers by the way, add about 2whp, while removing the resonators, and the k&n air filter don't add any power, may be 1whp together.

haha i really want to fix mine up, but it has 145000 miles and ive put about $4000 in it towards repairs in the last two months. The sales manager at fresno acura booked mine at 13,600, and he has a used 07 Type S for $28,000. i just dont know if its worth the money to fix up my car when im sure my engine will go south at 200k or so
