Recommended service @ 84k miles? Just follow Maintenance Minder?
Hello,
I've got an 05 TL that I purchased brand new. It's now got 84k miles on it and is due for a B2 service. My dealer keeps telling me I should replace the transmission fluid, spark plugs, timing belt, and water pump (ever since 60k miles, actually). The owner's manual says these aren't necessary until the Maintenance Minder says it's time. For the spark plugs, timing belt, and water pump it says to do @ 60k miles in very high or low temperatures. I do live in Florida, but it's not over 110 degrees here at all, typically, and my car is in a garage 23 hours a day on average.
I've done all of the regularly scheduled oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, and pollen filter replacements. Here what else I've had done:
5/31/07 39k miles: Replace Fuel Pump Relay (Warranty)
9/10/09 43k miles: Flush/replace brake fluid
7/22/08 57k miles: Wiper Motor and Power Steering Hose Recall
My plan is to schedule the normal B2 service and also flush/replace the brake fluid now. Should I really do anything else?
Thanks for your time/advice in advance

If you haven't done anything with the trans yet, I would service the transmission fluid. From what everyone on here says (and my service rep says the same), you don't want to do a machine based flush of the fluid. Instead do a few drain and fills. People on here describe a sequence of three drain and fills called the "3x3". Most dealers don't usually this, they will do just a single drain and fill. I scheduled three drain and fills, each a few weeks apart (again, my service rep agreed with this).
People on here seem to recommend replacing the 3rd and 4th gear sensors as preventative maintenance because they start to go bad and cause poor shifts which can cause early wear on the trans. I just got my parts on this and am going to have it done next week. We'll see how it goes.
As for the timing belt and other stuff, that is usually recommended for the 105k service.
Your 105k service would include:
- timing belt/tensioner/pulley
- water pump
- spark plugs
- perhaps a valve adjustment, but it seems this isn't absolutely necessary
Do some searches on here and you'll find quite a bit of info on all of these items.

Follow your MID and have your tranny fluid changed (3 x 3 method- more info in the 3G Service Department- sticky on the main 3G TL page).

Thanks everyone! I think I'm just going to do the regular B2 service along with the brake and trans fluid flush. I'll wait till 105k for the major stuff.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
