Checking out this car. HELP ME!
Ok hey guys. Im new to the forum but always knew about acurazine. I crashed my 2002 maxima and got 6000 and with the extra money i have i can now purchase the car ive always wanted. Today i just met with a guy to see his 2002 TL-S. He was originally asking 10,200 but i dont think id pay that much. I am offering 9000. The guy was really cool and seemed to know his stuff (would never buy off someone who didnt know there car). The car has 170,000 KILOMETERS ( i know most of you are from the states) and also has a bunch of mods. Here is the add for the list http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...373290350.html - Do you think this is a good deal for me? Also what are some things i should look for? Ive heard about transmission problems so what should i check to assess the transmission. Also one more thing, my friend has a 03 TL type S and when i rev his car from a stop it has a more full sounding, more "torquey" feeling/sounding rev then this one...why could that be? Please help and thank your for advice in advanced.

The guy has definitely put some work into it. Another good thing is that the T-belt job has already been done.
I'd worry about the transmission. He says it's never been replaced, so it's probably the older shitty design. That means it will fail. Might be in 10k miles or 60k miles, but it will definitely fail.
If your willing to put in an extra ~3k for the car (not worth it imo), then it seems like a great car.

dont care how clean or whats been done to it--unless you have 3 grand sitting in your pocket at the end of the deal for that transmission,,,its not a good deal
few of us would buy a gen2 again without a full trans warranty-
aftermarket or however, but dont risk it on your own
differance in cars rev/sound- maybe this one has a clogged cat

your insurance money is about what i'd pay...
keep that other 3K to replace the shitass transmission later...
or just buy one for 6K and go ahead and put the 6 speed swap in it.

im a bit worried about it. Karanx7 had advised me that all 2nd gen trannys are gonna go because the defect sooner or later. The owner explained that most of these tranny issues happen at 70-100km and hes at 170 000 kms. Would an acura dealer be able to check for problems foreshadowing tranny failure?

My 1st tranny went out at 125K shortly after I did my late 105 T-Belt Service. If hes just telling you that just becouse he´s hasnt broke your Safe, Hes playing with you!.
I would care less if he had 200K just to know hes on his first tranny it tells you so it will brake sooner or later..
Perhaps hes just damn lucky or is Lying to you.
Dont believe the Seller, Believe your fellow 2G Owners we Damn know best...
The Amount of Miles driven doesnt matter at all when talking about our Suicide Transmission, Its a MATTER OF DAMN HEAT.

2006 NBP TL MT6/ 02TL-S
I've got some mild lowering springs in mine, but that car, IMHO, is slammed so low as to make it impractical for normal driving, at least around here, and our roads are not as bad as some places. You try driving that thing fast around here and you'd rip something off the bottom or ruin a tire & wheel.

while many of us suffer trans failure between 60 and 110kmiles
thats just the `early failures` and reason for the special extended warranty to 109
At some point in any auto trans life, you will wear out the clutch packs
and it wont shift anymore
those people who got-based on reading here- 140-200kmiles before failure did very well on a stock TL trans!! kept up fluid changes
other makes of cars with similar trans are lucky to get 50! see audi with no warranty after 50! 5000 dollars please!!
stop looking at this car as a good deal in any respect!!!
--sure it may look cool, and the current owner is certain it will be trouble free at least to the end of his street~
By now you should see the general consensus--if no aftermarket trans replacement warranty = no good reason to purchase the car!!!!
get a nice honda and fix it to your liking--better trans- regular 87 gas- easy maitenance

lol yesterday it was noted that after I posted a line about bike led lights- an ad for a specialty light store appeared in the thread!!
as if by magic~... and not some fancy program that sniffs out different words for targeted advertising...
today, the Canuks with a question- and what does appear:
an ad for Alberta!

dude. looks nice, smells nice, drives nice...doesn't mean it's nice.
I love my TL to pieces, but I hadn't bought it brand new (well my dad) I would never have bought a used one. 197k miles on it and on my 3rd transmission.
I take MUCH better care of it (fluids and shit) than the previous drivers (dad/sister) but still man it was covered once under warranty but the other one was 3000 bucks!
If I was more technical I would have definitely put in the 6 speed. not only more fun, but I could have gotten an '04 6-speed, engine, harness for around 900 and had a faster, more exclusive and trouble free ride.
alas..
