Metallic/grinding noises

Hi

I have a 2000 acura tl with 192K miles on it. The transmission has about 100K miles on it. Of late i have been hearing metallic grinding kind of noises from the front of the car seemingly from the under-side.

The noise is present when i start the engine and thru 1/2nd gear. It goes way as i speed up. the noise stays even when the transmission shift lever is in 'P'.

I do suspect the grinding noises to be the transmission. I got it checked by a mechanic who said the transmission is ok but it is actually a noise from "loose substrate" in the catalytic converter. The cat did throw the P0420 code. However currently the check engine light is off, for the past few days.

How can i know for sure the noise is loose substrate from the cat and NOT the transmission?

Thanks.

jack the left side of the car up and support
bang on the bottem of the cat with your hand or a soft mallet
if it makes loose rock noises.. its bad

A muffler shop will usually test it for free- with the same banging plus a pressure/flow rate and temp test if needed

ck our vendor Excelerate for excellent deal on replacement units
