Ok, I THINK I got this right... I got the image in correctly, this is my boot sequence... Tell me if its wrong...

1. Turn on car
2. New splash screen comes on instantly
3. long Pause
4. "Go" button appears

is that correct? should i have a long pause before the "GO" button appears?

In order to get the bitmap to 113,068 (which will not create a lag when loading, at least not on mine it didn't) you need to change your RGB created image to an Indexed Color (Image > Mode > Indexed Color). Once inside the indexed color dialog box, chose Local (Perceptual) from the Palette drop down menu. Then input 173 in the Colors field. This will alter your colors in your image because you are limiting the palette, so you might have to make some sacrifices or changes to the image. Then save as bitmap, 8 bit. BTW, this pertains to Photoshop.
once you get the size smaller, then the "black" will go away alot quicker.

Reading is fundamental my friend

sounds like its fine. you cannot completely take off the nag sequence.... not yet anyway

its the nag text that has been able to be removed. you still need to hit ok

the way it was before, the startup image loads, then the nag text then the 'go' button appears

now, you have it as startup image, then blank screen(nag text in the past), then the 'go' button.

got it?

the only lag that people were complaining about is after you turn the car on and before the new image appears. at this point, the system is trying to compress the image so that it fits (if the image was too big) thats why there was lag

My image did lag before when it was the screen from acura... I just resized my new image 2 pixels smaller and now i have no lag whatsoever and i think the GO button comes on faster then before. I could be wrong, but it seems that way.

This was too easy

After the splash it takes about 3sec to the go screen(mod'ed). I wish a command could be writen to auto the go button.

That may be a problem. I would try a shareware like Paint Shop Pro which will alow you to lower the color depth to 8 bit (256 colors), but I had to use Photoshop to shrink the 256 color palette. Paint Shop Pro will redude the colors used, but still keep the full palette leaving 113,398 bytes which are too big.

If you really want to get this done... Someone here can probably send it to you or you can always (try it before you buy it) off a Morpheus or the like

PM me, I think you want the pic I used as a test, no?

When I get it right I can email the bmp to you.

i just sliced off a thin piece of image off the left side. when you slice it out. make sure you actually cut it out and not just make it black. ie. in photoshop, CROP a thin piece off one side.

result: no lag and still 256 colors

oh, use a brand new disk to burn on too and reupload the bin file from the original nav. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT MODIFY THE BIN FILE THAT YOU ARLEADY MODIFIED WITH THE PICTURE BEFORE.
Ahh that may be the problem, I keep forgetting to save an original set of the bin files and I was lazy to go get the DVD out again and just updated the already updated bin.

I will try it from scratch. Also I noticed that resizing to the smaller size (to keep aspect ratio) really made it fuzzier, so I will just crop it to the correct aspec size.

That worked

Using the original bin with the 238x133x256 image gets rid of the black lag and keeps the best color depth.

Now I can try other images.

ayethetiense, thank you! This tip you gave above was my problem. I was using the original BIN file, but I wasn't using a new disc. I was using a CD-RW and for whatever reason, the system didn't pick up the new file. I also tried renaming the system volume. Regardless, I have no lag and a nice crisp picture.

For those of you looking for a "free" picture tool. Someone on the TSX board suggested GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/). I used it and it worked great!

Solved "Unable to open BIN file" problem

No one has posted this problem yet but I'm going to be proactive and tell you how to fix it. If you try to use the windows or command line program to modify your bin file you might get the error "Unable to open BIN file", If you do then I found out you have to take off the "Read Only" flag on the files. In windows just highlight the files and right click on them and select "Properties" then uncheck the box "Read Only". This should solve any "Unable to open BIN file" problem. It fixed mine. The error I got is below

C:\Orginal Bin Files>dumpnavi BNHH401A.BIN list

Unable to open BIN file

Intresting menu in you get when you hold the Map/Guide, Menu, and Cancel buttons. Some stuff on their I have not figured out yet. Like the info on changing the tire wear. Might be a good thread to start.

My 05 TL w/Navi had the bin file of BNHH401A.BIN.

I would also like to try putting in a PCMCIA card with 128meg or higher compact flash card in it into the the DVD navi PC Card slot. On the memory card put the .BIN files and load from there. Then try the load from pc card button. I don't have any hardware to try it.

Thanks a whole bunch to bysin! Keep hackin buddy. Thanks for open sourcing your code!!

Angler67 I’m confused by your post. Maybe I’m missing something here but would the 238x133 be extremely small? I did mine (although I screwed up and used the TSX) at 478x232. I have the long black screen after the splash too.

Can you please elaborate on this some.

1 More hint.

After just doing the mod it works great on my 05 TL but one more thing.

Right after you get to the "load" screen go to the trunk and take out the Navi DVD and put the CD-R with the moded BIN files in. You have to run fast back and hit the load button or the screen goes away. We are talking a few seconds. So move fast.

Also, yes the text is only gone on the nag screen. You still have to hit the "GO" button. Hopefully this will be hacked to bypass it soon.

Got it to work. I don't care so much aboutthe nag screen showing up or the text on it, but I would like to "automate" the nag screen. I've written software for apps like this before, and it could be tricky to reverse engineer.

Anyway, here's what I did and didn't have to "rush":

Bring up the version screen
Take out the DVD
push the load from disk button
put the CD in
it found it and away I went

Good luck and I hope somebody figures out how to skip the OK button press on the warning screen soon.

hypertech, I agree. I finally stumbled across this same procedure too as a result of loading so many CDs of various images.

Thanks, ayethetiense for the cropping tip. No more initial lag.

I must have still been asleep still. The correct dimension is 478x233x256. I got the 478x233 by initially doing a resize with aspect ratio retention. Then I shaved the 2-pixel width and 1 pixel height off the original image for best quality.

.jpg files are 24 bit by design, using lossy compression, while .gif files are traditionally 8 bit, using lossless compression. .bmp can be any color depth using no compression.

Most posting services only support jpg which forces 24 bit color depth. They may support gif's as well. The reason is the compression makes the images smaller and more friendly for upload/download. These technologies were designed while 33K/56K modems were the norm

I also have the same issue as u guyz. I got the startup pic to work though. Now got a sweet pic of Beyonce welcoming me to my car and telling me to drive it like I stole it. Everytime I start up my TL - I think to myself LOL!
