Some tidbits from here: http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...4-spa-24-hours

Following the likes of Aston Martin and Bentley, Audi has now confirmed its lineup of race cars for the 2014 Spa 24 Hours taking place this weekend. Eight examples of the Audi R8 LMS ultra race car will be taking part in the grueling event, held on the beautiful Spa Francorchamps circuit, and these will be divided up among four teams: Belgian Audi Club Team WRT, Team Parker Racing, Saintéloc Racing and ISR.

The Spa 24 Hours is the highlight of the Blancpain Endurance Series, which is open to private teams, so major automakers aren't directly involved. However, some of the teams, such as AF Corse, M-Sport Bentley and Reiter Engineering, have close links with the automakers and have access to top factory drivers. In fact, in this year’s race, top Audi drivers Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer will be racing for Belgian Audi Club Team WRT.

Audi has already won two of the top 24-hour races this year, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Nürburgring 24 Hours, so we’re sure the automaker through its affiliates will be keen to clinch the trifecta. It won’t be easy, though, as 53 race cars from rival marques will also be on the grid.

The brand with the four rings will be going up against cars from Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Nissan, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. All of the race cars are entered in the same technical category—the GT3 class. Consequently, a victory in the Spa 24 Hours numbers among the most important single wins a GT race team can achieve anywhere in the world.

Following pre-qualifying, qualifying and a mandatory night qualifying session on Thursday, the top 20 spots on the grid will be awarded in the super pole shootout on Friday. The race then gets underway on Saturday.

Audi claimed its third Spa 24 Hours victory in four years courtesy of the Belgian WRT team and its all-star line-up of Rene Rast, Markus Winkelhock and Laurens Vanthoor.
The best of the WRT Audi R8 LMS ultras prevailed in a battle with the Marc VDS BMW Z4 driven by Dirk Werner, Markus Palttala and Lucas Luhr by just seven seconds.
The Audi and the BMW had swapped the lead back and forth through the night because they were out of sequence on refueling, but the Z4's better fuel efficiency and brake wear appeared to have put it on course for victory on Sunday morning. An ABS problem for the BMW handed the initiative to WRT and Audi, which looked on course for victory even after a change of front brake discs and pads in the penultimate hour.
Marc VDS rolled the dice at the final round of stops with 40 minutes to go by not changing tires. That gave Werner a lead of 20s, but Rast was able to close it down and take the lead in the space of 10 laps.
Audis also filled out third and fourth positions: Christopher Mies, Frank Stippler and James Nash took the final podium spot, a lap down on the top two; and the Stainteloc R8 shared by Stephane Ortelli, Edward Sandstrom and Gregory Guilvert was a further lap behind.
Sixth place went to the best of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMGs in the race, HTP Motorsport's late entry for 2013 winners Maximilian Buhk and Maximilian Gotz and GT debutant Jazeman Jaafar.
The WRT Audi shared by three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winners Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler and Benoit Treluyer ended up 12th after a long delay when their R8 sustained damage in a collision in the 20th hour.
Bentley missed out on a top-10 result with the best of its Continental GT3s. The car shared by Steven Kane, Guy Smith and Andy Meyrick ended up 13th after losing time with a damaged brake line early in the race and then an ECU change and splitter damage.

Info...

The fourth and final variant of the new Audi R8 has made its debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Following the reveal of the V10 and V10 Plus models, as well as the all-electric e-tron, we now have our first look at the new R8 LMS endurance racer that’s set to do competition from the 2016 motorsport season.
The new R8 LMS is lighter and safer than ever before. It features even more race car technology, clearly improved aerodynamics and, as a result, provides teams with an even more impressive package.

Power comes from a V-10 engine that’s nearly identical to the unit fitted to the road-going R8. The engine displaces 5.2 liters and produces approximately 585 horsepower, depending on the applicable regulations and the restrictor required.

Drive is to the rear wheels via a sequential gearbox, and the vehicle’s weight is just 2,700 pounds thanks to plenty of carbon fiber in its construction, a 55-lb saving over the predecessor. At the same time, the torsional stiffness of the stressed frame has increased by 39 percent.

Another innovation for the new R8 LMS is the first-time use of a fully-lined underfloor and integrated rear diffusor. As a result, the dimensions of the rear wing could be reduced without a corresponding increase of aerodynamic drag. The wheel wells, which are open rearwards via a larger cross-section, contribute to improved airflow, and the new radiator at the front also allows increased airflow.

Like Mercedes-AMG’s new GT3, also on show in Geneva this week, the new R8 LMS has been designed to meet new GT3 regulations being introduced next year, mostly relating to enhanced safety. We’ll see the car entered in some events this year, however, as part of an extended testing program. Confirmed events include the 24-hour races at the Nürburgring (May 16/17) and Spa (July 25/26).

Teams will be able to place orders for the new R8 LMS in the second half of 2015. Deliveries will commence by the end of the year.

Love it. It's starting to look more like its Lambo cousin.

From here: New Audi R8 LMS Ready For 2015 Nürburgring 24 Hours Race

Fresh from its debut at March’s Geneva Motor Show, Audi’s new R8 supercar in race car trim will be among the many cars at the Nürburgring this weekend taking part in the German circuit’s annual 24-hour race. The racing version of the new Audi supercar is the R8 LMS, and although it’s been designed to meet the FIA’s new GT3 specifications coming into force for 2016, in modified form it’s been allowed to compete in the 2015 VLN series, whose highlight is the Nürburgring 24 Hours race.

Power in the R8 LMS comes from a V-10 engine that’s nearly identical to the unit fitted to the road-going R8. The engine displaces 5.2 liters and has its output capped at 500 horsepower for the VLN. Unlike the road car, drive in the racer is to the rear wheels only, via a sequential gearbox.

Four teams will field the R8 LMS, including factory-backed teams Audi Sport Team Phoenix and Audi Sport Team WRT. Audi is also once again running its Race Experience program that allows car enthusiasts to buy a seat in the race.

In the field of 160 entrants taking part this weekend, the fleet of R8 LMS race cars will go up against 22 rivals from six other marques in the GT3 category. Some of the other marques competing include Aston Martin (Vantage GT12), Bentley (Continental GT3), BMW (Z4 GT3), Lexus (RC F GT3), Mercedes-Benz (SLS AMG GT3) and Porsche (911 GT3 R). Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus will also be there with its SCG003, competing in the specialized SPX category.

The Nürburgring 24 Hours is regarded as one of the toughest racing events of the year, and competitors race the full 15.77-mile length of the combined Nordschleife and Grand Prix circuit. Last year’s winner was Audi Sport Team Phoenix with the previous-generation R8 LMS.

Is it a LMS rule that allows only RWD entries, or is it the fact that RWD performs better than AWD in the dry ?

My guess is that it's a GT3 rule. All cars in the FIA GT3 championships are RWD, including the Nissan GT-R.
