Tires for Winter in GTA
Good Day all,
Could I get some help in picking some good tires for this winter from the GTA area, and they don't have to be the most expensive
Thanks

I still have not made up my mind. If you do a search you should be able to find a few threads about winter tires jrod05.
Im thinking I might just say screw it and call the dealer and tell them to put tires on Steels I have. Will this be a lot more money than if I buy tires somewhere else and get them put on the steels where ever?

I used Hankook Zovac W401 on my Accord before my TSX, was planning to get them again for the TSX, but wanted to try the hardcore Nokian Hakka 2.
The Hankook Zovacs in 215/60/16 are $500 shipped from 1010tire.com , and I'll be paying around $785 for 205/60/16 Nokian Hakka 2's locally.
I drive aggressively and the Hankook were quite good in the snow, treadlife was extremely good. A bit noisy on the highway and quite firm at high speeds (160-190km/h, they are rated at 160km/h).
Tireguy had very good recommendations on the Hakka 2's, so I'm gonna entrust my TSX to them for this season.

Forgot to mention that there's a winter tire thread in the wheel/tire forum:

Anyone tried the Dunlop Winter Sport M3's? Thinking between that and the Pirelli Winter 210 Snowsport. I had the Pirelli 210 Asymmetrical for 4+ seasons before with my old A4 and that went pretty well, not sure if the Snowsport is any different. Heard good stuff for the Dunlop, but mostly off the A4 owners, and quattro might have been a factor there as well. Looking to get in the 205-60-R16 size, with steelies unless I can find some cheap alloys. Anyone got good experiences with a local shop in the GTA that I can go and check out?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Go with Toyo Garrith HT... IMO it's not as good as a HAKKA-4 or HAKKA 2 but it's damn good.
By the way, I'm not sure the HAKKA-2 comes non studded. I know the the HAKKA-4 come studded only. Since you're in Toronto, you're not allowed driving with studded tyres.
Good luck

You have to ask yourself what winter tire is the best for the GTA driving conditions. In Toronto you have a lot of bare roads during the winter, but when you do get snow it is usually quite a bit and it is wet. You don't get a lot of ice on the road compared to cities like Edmonton. (I lived in the GTA for over 25 years)
You are looking for a tire that has good dry road performance, quiet, good in both light and deep snow and has good wet traction.
I would recommended either the Dunlop Winter Sport M3 (no personal experience with this tire) or the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2. (I have had very good experience with Michelin). This is the Tirerack real world survey: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...sp?type=W&VT=C
On my Escape which has great all season tires (Michelin Cross Terrains) I always change to winter tires because as good as the Cross Terrains are, they are no match for a true winter tire like the Michelin Alpins that I use.
Good luck with your choice. I hope that you have a good winter.

I've got 195/55-15 Toyo Garit HT snows on my 03 Protege, with automatic (ie. there's not a lot of power for a quick launch). These tires are great in the snow, and perhaps a little bit wider than ideal, given they're 55 series, but they work.
Their big weakness is that if the temperature climbs above 5C (about 41F), they loose their cornering and braking abilities, and the car slides around every corner, without trying, and a low speeds. After two winters, treadwear has been minimal, but then again, this car has no real power, and I've been treating them carfully, so that they'll last.

A friend of mine got Dunlop M3s for his S60R and loved them. I'm getting the M3s this year on 16" steels. It provides enough traction for the conditions we get in Ottawa, without sacrificing too much dry traction and handling.

The cheapest quote I got for Dunlup Winter Sports M3 is CND $147.00 balanced + tax. Is this good?
The tirerack wesite survey says that the Dunlop is better than the Michelin Alpins but I wonder how acurate it really is. I think the ratings are all subjective unless those poeple who voted tried all of the brands.
I picked up a copy of Consumers Reports yesterday. CR rated Michelin X-Ice #1, over Bridgestone Blizzard WS-50.
