i just broke my second axle in the 7 months ive had my car. this shit is getting old. the original axles were clicking, and im not surprised they broke. i just snapped a brand new ps axle from o reillys. the outer joint just exploded. wtf. had to pay 65$ to tow to my house and 70 for another axle. is this a common problem with cl-s6?

Aftermarket axles for this car seem to be a no go. They don't have the open balancer and can't seem to handle the abuse our cls6's can dish out. I can remember stories from members here breaking them easily.
Its common for our axles to get the death wobble after years of use. Especially if your lowered. I had really bad vibes with mine whenever I gave it gas at highway speeds. After being lowered for many years I knew it was coming, but once I put new tires on there was no denying it.
The oem ones from Acura used to be ridiculously expensive. But they recently lowered the price down to about $150 each. If you break another axle I Suggest a original replacement.

Autozone replaces the axles for free with a lifetime warranty I believe. However, the OEM axles are pretty cheap now, so I would just get those to avoid the hassle.

i cant launch my car or i snap axles. i broke 6 axles all in 2weeks. twisted two more axles. all life time warranty. takes me 10-15min to swap them out now

Yea easy job to replace them. Just like all other hondas. It just gets old. Ive never had a car that breaks axles before let alone a stock car.

Are you guys running bajillion HP engines? Seriously I have 131K on my original axles. I have had to replace rubber suspension and end links and my axles are still pristine...

OEM axles are tough...more so than the crap they sell at [insert nation wide auto chain here].

Transmission guy replaced it with this, saying it has a lifetime warranty.

The problem is people buy the crappy aftermarket axles to save money. Oem are only 150 each so might as well get those.

They are good enough for pretty much any N/A setup.

If you are boosted Oem can still be ok, or you can get custom ones made. You can get custom anything really if you just know how to research and have the money.

The Oem will eventually snap after about 10 years from rusting under that vibration damper. To avoid this run a bead of silicone along the edges before installing. Also make sure the boots are the right tightness or axle grease will fly everywhere. If you make them too tight the boot will rip and leak. Too loose and they leak also.

I have multiple cars with original axles that are >10 years old

my 94 accord still has it's original axles (sans 1 outer CV Joint at 140K miles) and it is nearing 22 years old and has 210K miles on it

next up we have my 2002 Acura CL-S 13 years old and 138K still on original axles

finally we have a 12 year old Subaru Legacy with 67K and ALL 4 of it's axles are in pristine shape. they are all constant velocity axles

curious to know if age plays apart in breaking axles...

I wonder if youngsters use all 250hp at launch.
or if they're more aggressive in daily driving off a redlight or stop sign .

we know that this is a moderately-high powered front wheel drive vehicle.
we know that the front end takes a beating.

I wonder if aggressive take offs accelerate this wear.

3rd gen TL's are notorious for broken axles as well.

How can you say for certain the shaft won't snap after 10 years? That happened to mine so it is obviously possible. I never said every singe axle will snap the day it turns 10 years old. I thought common sense would explain that. I also said "about 10 years" not exactly 10 years. I daily drove my car for 8-9 years in chicago winters with all the salt. Where you live plays a part in how bad your car corrodes/rusts. Not all axles come with vibration dampers on the shaft that salt can get underneath and corrode the metal. How you drive can also play a part in it. It will weaken from rust then eventually snap usually when taking off from a light. If you never rev past 3k rpms then you are less likely to snap it as soon.

It depends how the axle broke and under what circumstances. Whether it is oem or not also matters.

lol we've heard how you drive and that has everything to do with it. I have NEVER had a FWD car that snapped an axle... not even the CLS and it routinely sees hard acceleration (we have short entrance ramps here with metered traffic entry)

so if you said something like if you ABUSE YOUR CAR then you are more likely to snap an axle, I would agree. 1993 is 21 years already so about 10 years is just BS no matter how you cut it.



obviously if you are snapping axles, you're doing it wrong... and Chicago has NOTHING on what we get for winters and the amount of salt used.

Here is my original axle after roughly 10 years and 110k miles. It snapped from rust, not from abuse.

wash the underside of your car more often? Defective part? just because YOU had an axle snap 10 years, does not mean everyone else will. I have already proven that....

I have to agree with brian6speed as my axle snapped due to corrosion from the road salt. Every spring I washed & sprayed the underside of my vehicle by placing a garden sprinkler in 4 areas for half an hour each.

And yet it broke when it reached 189K miles.
