Running in the A5 mode slowed the SMG by another 0.2 second.
BMW claims that performance, not convenience, is SMG's raison d'être. Our numbers don't prove that out, but we do think there's $2472 worth of convenience here

i also remember reading 2 or 3 more articles claiming DSG and SMG are all slower. more bullshit?

I think DSG and SMG are different enough technologies to not be lumped together?

This may have been said before, but I'm not searching through 25 pages of posts to find it:
I am assuming the 335 will be BMW's first turbo (non-diesel). Those first year buyers are going to be nothing but guinea pigs for the service departments around the country. There was nothing wrong with the NA straight sixes they've used for years, why the heck are they going turbo?!?!
btw.....I am now accepting donations so I can buy an M3 sedan when it arrives

here's another review from the mother of vw forums. but anyways, dsg and smg haven't achieved crap but make you shell out more money for a phancy auto. its really designed to allow guys who can't drive stick feel better about themselves by spending more money.
i think i read somewhere 96% of new bmw's sold are all autos while acura is around 80%, mostly rsx mt buyers i bet. maybe volkswagen sports car also have a high percentage of automatic buyers as well so both brands are trying to cash in performance automatic gimics?

uhm... did engine sounds sweet in the video, those germans were pissed and i think i am sold... it has that M3 presence with the wide stance and lowered ride...
it looks great IMO and everyone who shit on it will be eating their own words when the cameo comes off..
i bet half the body panels arent even the real ones. The rear bumper looks like its right off a 335 with extra wide notches cut out for the exhaust. The front fender does not appear to have the expected M grill on the side. The front bumper is complete cameoflaged other than the center. The hood has plenty of cameo to hide the "power bulge" of the engine. Too much is still hidden...

I've been thinking of doing that. I just hope Infiniti upgrades the next G's interior like they did with the M....can't stand the current interior.

Bottom line the 1/4 mile will be faster in a 3 pedal car as long as the clutch pumper doesn't make a mistake, but he will have to abuse the drive train to do it. From a roll the cars will be very close as long as their are no mistakes. On a road course all the perfect heal toeing in the world (fun none the less) will not help the three pedal car, the equal SMG driver will have lower lap times the vast majority of the time.

Seriously, did you not read anything that was said. DSG and SMG are hard to launch, its not meant for 1/4 times. Put them on a road course or from a roll.. then the outcomes will be different. DSG/SMG can shift faster than a standard manual, its been proven many times. You just cant dump the clutch at launch as aggressively.
From all your posts, i can easily say that you should stay out of car talk areas.

Better gas mileage and more usable torque.

Atleast someone knows what the frig SMG is all about.
2 pedal manual 4 life.
Those who insult SMG have no idea how crisp it really can shift, and how quick and efficient it is. I'm not after Quarter mile, I"m after launch. I'm a municipal driver.
I'll take shots of my carbon black one once it comes in, has navi and all them whistles/

I believe in the DSG box there's no torque interruption between gearshifts. You can definetely feel an unending surge of power, unlike the pause necessitated in 3 pedals cars during the upshift. And I've never felt upshifts as smooth as those in the DSG box. Blows away the auto shifts in my TL.
With that said, I think I'd prefer the 3 pedal car more: something about perfectly rev matching and heel and toeing, and skipping gears at will (DSG can't skip), just does it for me. But I've got nothing but praise for DSG: its a fantastic piece of tech, and undoubtedly one of the reasons why they fitted it to the mother-of-all cars, the Veyron.
And yes, DSG and SMG are two differet technologies. DSG uses twin clutches to execute super smooth, super fast shifts.
EDIT: One "caveat" if you will about DSG. Say you in 6th cruising on the hwy, and call for a quick 2 gear downshift with a couple taps on the left paddle. Since 6th and 4th are on the same shaft, the box has to preload fifth and then go to 4th, there's a slight dealy. The delay isn't irritating or huge, but its there.
The E46 cab looks long also from the side profile.
The wheels on the above car look like 17s, that color is also nasty.
Wait until you see an Alpine white 335 vert with the sport package 18s.
I'm sure it will be nice.
The rear is still a bit questionable without having seen one yet.
Lot of people are saying the coupe looks much better in person.

Whats so different?Standard wheels on the 328i are ugly but thats about it. I sorta like the mesh sport wheels on the 328i better than the sport wheels on the 335i.

Call me a crazy man, but I don't like the coupe's "elongated" rear section. The quarter panel seems too long. Maybe it just needs to be seen in person.
