I hate those mother fuckers who go the speed limit or under the speed limit in the left lane. I don't speed that much on the highway, 10km/h over the limit maybe and it pisses me off when ppl don't notice that I am approaching fast and they don't move out of the way. Most of the time I have to flash my light at them a couple of time before they realise what's going on and switch lanes.

I disagree, I think this is one of the reasons people don't move over. They say to themselves "I AM going fast, and this is the fast lane, so why should I move over?" Instead they should be saying to themselves "Oh I am not currently passing anyone, so I should not be in this lane."

I wish we had it in MA and then I wish they would enforce it.
We have that here in PA and I often see trucks, usually the ones with oversized loads that can't go to fast do exactly that. I've even seen them get pulled over for not doing it as well.

And you should always move out of the way if you aren't passing and/or someone wants to get by you in the passing lane. I seriously hate when people don't seem to grasp this very simple concept. What speed I'm going is none of your business you don't get to sit in the passing lane and try to enforce/dictate the flow of traffic. Are most people in the passing lane speeding? The answer is yes. The reason usually is that the speed limits are too low, but that is between them and law enforcement, not the driver trying to pass and the IDIOT who thinks they get to sit in the passing lane and slow everyone down.

It's gotten to the point that I flash my lights and even give slight honks at these people every now and then. I even flicked someone off once over it, since after I waited patiently for about a minute and flicked my lights a few times they finally moved over and then tried to flick their lights back as if I were the one in the wrong.

only if the cop pulls you over. If you want to do the same speed as the person next to you, pass him and pull over or slow down and get behind.

you are holding up traffic in the PASSING lane.

I saw this 1293983475 times today while driving this morning. Not to mention the 3 fucking Prius' doing 55 in the fast lane slowing everyone down. I fucking hate that.

No sir, they do not. They may refer to the same lane but they are not the same thing. Fast lane implies that as long as you are driving fast it is the appropriate lane to travel in which it is not. Passing lane implies that the lane is to be used to pass slower moving traffic which it actually is.

What exactly is "fast"? Do you have a solid 100% correct answer that everyone will agree with? Now, what is "passing"? That is fairly easy to define. When people think that the left lane is the fast lane, they feel it is acceptable to drive in if they are going fast. When they think the left lane is the passing lane, they think it is acceptable to use when passing.

Thoughts become things.

^ When you call it a fast lane, people think well...60 in this 75 zone is fast enough. I'm going fast. I have a right to be in the 'fast lane'.

On a three-lane freeway, the rightmost lane is the merging lane, the middle lane is the travel lane, and the left lane is the passing lane. Easy, simple, needs to be taught.

I don't think I've ever seen a Drivers Education book that is use to take the test refer to it as the fast lane. I have always been taught that it is the passing lane.

As for fast, if you driving in it and someone is on your ass then you're not going fast enough.

My point exactly, what is the definition of fast? It's very subjective, fast to my Mom is going the speed limit on the Highway. Fast to me is going 20 mph over the speed limit on the highway. Which one of us is right?

If your not actively passing someone, move to the right.

I HATE these idiots sitting in the leftlane doing 60.

Every time someone in front of me does this, call me a douche but I ALWAYS pass him, cut him, and slow down to 45 then take off.

People driving in the left lane and not yielding when they see a vehicle (me) approaching from behind pisses me off to no end. I use 95 a lot where it's only three lanes and this happens all the time.
Something else I find myself shaking my head about because there's no rational explanation at all is why people cruise at 70 - 80 when the speed limit is 55, but when the speed limit is 65 they putter along at 60. I mean c'mon!

What's even worse is when I do finally get around someone - usually by having to pass them on the right because they refuse to move over - they get right up on my ass after I go by. I love that. Windshield washers on at that speed soak the car behind me It's really fun when it's obvious that the asshole now tailgating me is one of those detail nazis that polish their valve stems. The expression on their faces when they realize window cleaner is soaking their car is priceless

NICE!

If it is raining i will make sure to have the tires on the part of the road where the tires usually don't push away the water and then you see thier wipers on a full speed.

This particular option works well in the winter and if there are a lot of cinders near the jersey wall.
When you pass the car you put your drivers side wheels on the line where these cinders lay. It's amazing how fast they slow down after getting blaasted with road debri

Goddamit just today after working 12hrs straight and trying to hurry home some bitch was sitting right in front of me in the left lane and I flicked my lights at them for close to two miles. She got passed on the right by a semi and a fucking school bus. I'm one of those people who refuse to pass on the right unless I'm extremely fed up, so I waited it out and she finally got the hint, but of course the dumb bitch had to gawk at me like I was in the wrong or some shit.

Hawaii has some of the worse drivers out there. Most of the people don't have a clue what the left lane is for. The worse is having two cars drive side by side on a 2 lane hwy for about 3 miles which happens quite often.

*clap clap* Honestly, if you want to go no faster than 65, stay in the middle or right lane of the freeway. I'm on I-205 every day, and I always see signs posted saying "slower traffic keep right" but that doesn't stop people from jumping to the far left lane so they can go exactly 60 mph.

Talking Passing vs. Driving

It is a passing lane. Use it to pass. If you exceed the speed limit, you do that at your own peril. Nowhere in traffic law does it state you have a right to drive in any lane you desire.

Driving is a privilege granted by the state, not Smith and Wesson.

This blitz won't have any effect over the long term. People use the left lane as a driving lane because rules are never enforced on a consistent, regular basis. They put officers on the look-out for a few weeks or months at a time only, and then no one cares anymore. This is just the 'focus of the month'...next it will be speeding or seatbelts. The past few generations of drivers have always driven in the left lane, and will continue to do so. IMO, the only way they can truly make a difference is to enforce left lane passing-only from the get-go and stay on it, in hopes that the message gets across to new drivers (and hoping older drivers eventually get fed up enough with the tickets). Using it for passing-only, in general, just isn't in our driving culture and I don't see it changing with these stupid blitzes.

I wish they would enforce it like they do seatbelts and speeding. This is every bit as dangerous as speeding. You get people that become enraged and take chances to go around the person, the probability of someone going even faster than they typically would, and more possibilities of road rage. This needs to be a country wide law and ALL enforcement agencies need to observe and enforce it.

I had to explain that lane to my wife as well. Im just dumbfounded on how many people think its ok to sit there or that is what that lane is for. I put i as that lane is like the other lane on a 2 lane hwy, when you pass someone you dont just stay over there, you pass, you pull back over. That is what that extra lane is for but you dont have to worry about traffic coming the other direction.

Agreed, Fast lane is just age-old vernacular for passing lane. If folks want to split hairs on the official DOT definition, be my guest. But don't start implying that people drive differently per their chosen term. That's a major stretch.

Missed this thread. All I have to say is:

I SALUTE YOU, Washington Highway Patrol! I hope that this issue is taken up in Ohio forthwith. The same law is on the books in Ohio but it is unenforced.

I will see if this is actually enforced. I'm not too optimistic...

In the mean time I will just continue to either pass in the HOV lane, or on the right.

It would be a dream come true but, this type of enforcement will NEVER happen in NJ.

And honestly, I haven't noticed any particular car type in which said drivers squat in the left lane. However, New York drivers are NOTORIOUS for doing this, with Vermont drivers a distant second.

i drive 250 miles a week on the highway and i concluded that it's 70mph minimum in the left lane to be realistic, but really that is still too slow at times.

but its a very complicated matter when people can't use common sense while driving...if there is a line of cars behind you, get the hell out of the way! get back to the right! i see it probably once a day when a line of cars [behind a 60mph-left-lane-person] disperse into the right lanes to pass, causing chaos...

so at the end of the day, someone going speed limit is actually the problem if in the left lane [and this is the only case where this fact is true, speeding drivers anywhere else besides the left lane of an expressway or a racetrack are just dumb drivers]

another take on it for the go-green folk: when i see these slow ass drivers in the left lane these days, i think to my self jokingly how these assholes probably think they are saving gas or something; being afraid to ruin their mpg by accelerating. in reality, they are wasting more gas than anyone else: every single car that gets mad and has to pass them is wasting unnecessary gas. i have to downshift into 3rd [sport mode] and floor it past them to prove a point...one dumbass at a time.
