On Board Diagnostics 2 Port

I am trying to locate the On Board Diagnostic (OBD II)port for the CLs. I'd like to hook up a laptop to the car so I can get some running numbers off of it.

Anyone know where its located?

Never mind, Chods FAQ had the answer. I don't know why I didn't just look at that in the first place.

I've got a co-worker buddy who bought his software from http://obd-2.com/ for his WRX.

He wrecked his WRX about 2 weeks ago(totaled) and took out his mini linux box, and his 5.6 inch LCD screen. I haven't tried to hook it up yet, but we're going to try tomorrow at lunch and see if it works OK or not. If it does, then I'll probably buy all the stuff from him.

I'll let ya know how it goes.

I must have read it wrong then, I saw $122 for a single gateway. In my case I only need ISO so it should work out well.

Actually, he got his software for even cheaper than that. The folks from the WRX boards he frequents went in on a group buy. He got his stuff for like 85 bucks.

Actually $162 for Triple Combo to cover all cars sounds pretty reasonable?

I have no idea as I really haven't shopped around for this kind of software. It sounds reasonable, but then again I don't know what all is out there. If I can get the hookup from my buddy, then I won't need to look any further. He says this is about the cheapest he could find that would work for his ride. If it works for us also, then I would think this is a pretty good buy. I'll find out in about 3 hours.

My vague 2 cents...:P

It will be a piss poor install just to see if we can get it working. He don't expect it to take more than 15 mins just to see if we can get a reading. He already has the AC/DC conversion thingy (don't know what the hell its called) and says its a cinch to hook up.

I don't know if he brought his digicam or not, and I don't have mine. I'll see if I can muster one up before lunch.

So the Cl actually has a port... and with the correct software one can hook a PC to it and see what sensors are doing what?

Yep, the OBDII port is below and behind the Coin Holder/Ash Tray. You just hook up to it with the provided cable and software and monitor various engine parameters.

How many parameters are available is what I'm interested in?? Also, I didn't see anything about reseting DTCs, just reading them. It is great to be able to reset the codes...

What can we do with thos parameters?

How we can tune, or find out what to be tuned?

We currently have no mods to tune for or with (except for those with V-AFC). But if you are going to wrench on your own vehicle the tool is invaluable.

The ability to see what the engine is doing is also inetresting. But as the aftermarket increases the need for seeing what is occuring is paramount. I can't see how people would ever significantly adjust their fuel pressure without watching fuel trim values but some do.

You can see things from MPH, RPM, System Voltage, etc. But then you can also watch the afore mentioned fuel trim values, add to that the knock counts (detonation), ignition timing and knock retard, MAP, MAT, Calculated Load, etc. There are many values to allow you to see the 'health' of your drivetrain.

It worked... It was a lot easier to use the laptop vs going the inverter / LCD / mini linux box route we initially planned. The laptop we were using had NO juice, it went dead in like 4 mins after we unhooked it from the power supply. As soon as I tried to get a screenshot it went dead. I did however manage to get some numbers off of the car.

True, enough, you can't write to the ECU, but then again, this is a "diagnostics" port, not a "hey I wanna write some shit to my ECU so I can be cool" port. IMO its just something fun to do.

Once the laptop gets a bit more power, we'll go back out there... Screenshots, and pissy digicam pics soon to come...

There is no need to write data, none of the similar tools can. But can it reset trouble codes?? If you can find out that would be great. But regardless, I have email them with the same question.

Yes, it can verify and reset trouble codes. It also does freeze frame data, so that the last second before an engine dies it collects all the data for a freeze frame.

So in short, yes, it can.

It was a rush post so I didn't get to put explainations of what the hell was going on in the pics... but never the less, here are 28 crude digicam shots. Most are of the RPMs and load ratings, and some of fuel pressure. I tried to take a sequence shot of the graphs so you could kinda see how it updates. Roughly 7-9 frames per second depending on how much data you are querying, the more data you ask for, the less often it updates (obvious).

I also took a pic of the LCD, for the final install, I'll have to figure out where I'm going to place it.

Scalbert,

Here are a few links you might want to look into also

http://www.netech.dk/pda/indexe.html

http://www.obd2.com/

http://www.aeswave.com/Palm/CJ2/

http://www.auterraweb.com/scantools.html <- Nice

Their not quite Honda PGM-F1 scanners but they do all the generic OBDII registers and a few 9141-2 and nonuniform honda dtc's...

Its a starting point .. most range from 150-400 .. some get upwards of 1K depending on what apps your looking for (GM/FORD/BMW/Honda/Etc).....

Hope that helps some

I do like those and it would be a choice if I had a Palm/Visor or a WinCE handheld. But I have historically used my laptop for this, and probably will continue since it is basically with me at all times. Oh yea, and free to me...

But thanks for the info...

Cat 5... Nothing fancy, it plugs a serial port on your laptop or whatever. The main thing you have to buy is the OBDII connector (the red peice in the pics)

It uses the ISO-9141-2 rs232 smart client appliance chip. You can find more info at http://www.obd-2.com/chip.htm

Ohh, and the larger pics are fixed on the server. Still running slooooow though.
