Heads Up Display (HUD Installed!)

Hi. I thought I'd share my experience with the J.Tec International HUD (Heads Up Display) I recently bought on Ebay and installed today in about an hour.

The cost was about $80.00 shipped and purchased from 360infinite-usa (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWNX%3AIT).

The unit arrived quickly and after unboxing it, I was very surprised that it was made much better and less than half the cost of a Defi VSD II which I had a pleasure to own about ten years ago when I had my '99 GSR.

I proceeded to install it. I tapped the 12V positive power and ground and hooked up the white wire off the supplied cable to the ECU connector A, blue with white wire, known as pin 11. I routed all the wiring and did my standard tests. Long story short, I mounted in with double sided velcro and carefully placed the included tinted, yet see through, mylar on the inner side of the windshield (this will reduce the double vision that the unit makes on the windshield when it reflects/projects).

Anyhow, I read the instructions and out of the box I did not have to adjust anything.

I did my standard road test during daylight and am very pleased with the performance and look. At night, it will rock!

This was a mod costing under $100 and less than an hour to install and in all honesty is very well worth it (and it's really cool and provides safety).

Decent mod, but I'm a stickler for OEM look. I would definitely have to mod the dash to hide the projector

Yeah, I hear you. I thought of this myself but liked the position in which it reflects onto the windshield.

However, it can be custom mounted next to the center speaker and reflected under the rear view mirror. This is my next endeavor (for when I have more time).

Thats pretty cool! . It would be cool to be able to make it blue, to match the TL interior lighting. Or to be able to have something else displayed up there (like boost or RPM). What does it do when you hit the speed warning?

If I had that, I would try to integrate it into the dash somehow.

Looks like the 2nd pic IS a night shot. Cool mod. If it adds safety, I'm for it. Red would be a nice color as well for the Type-S guys.

Okay, let me answer some questions, and post more pictures later today.

Due to the ECU of our car, you can only successfully get the SPEED output, and nothing else. I've tried even with third party products from MSD to help, and nothing. So, don't count on anything except MPH!

Firstly, after driving extensively at night yesterday with it, it rocks!

The color is green - and is much better than blue because the Defi VSD II was blue/white and much harder to see during the day. Again, IMO this unit is better than the VSDII and half the cost.

However, you can program the unit to light up in orange to say "SPEED" at a designated MPH and you can also have a buzzer go off for 30 seconds beyond that speed mark as a warning to speeding or whatever.

All last night I was thinking about the position of the HUD and optimal and more stealth looking. So, this morning I moved the unit forward (from where it is towards the front of the car) and butted it up against the windshield and double side velcro'd it on the air vent. Furthermore, I carefully measured and cut another piece of mylar and placed it on the window. It looks so much more unobtrusive and works just as well.

Again, I'll take more pictures today while I'm driving so you can see it in daylight and my original shot yesterday was a night picture, which I'll try to do more again today. My camera doesn't work too well without the flash at night as it tends to make everything blurry.

Anyhow, thanks, and good luck!

For the life of me I could not get dark/night pictures as my camera takes shaky/blurry pictures.

So, here are two new ones (replaces the original file names) of what's what as I mentioned above.

Oh, and a pic of the VSD II in my prior '99 GS-R. Note: Placement doesn't work too well in our TL in the same location due to the curve of the window. Also, take notice how I had to aim the VSDII (not as strong display as the J.Tec).

Nope. It's controlled by the main computer in the car. I tried an MSD product to tap the ignition and nope, no go.

Still happy with the mod though - especially now with the new location.

Did that with the MSD - however tapping "one coil" in insufficient as we have 6!

This might be a good investment for me cause for some reason my gauges read out is wrong. In the E-z pass lane the speed radar show that my car going faster then what on the cluster.

do you have different rim's on you car than the ones from the factory (judging by avatar)? If yes, that's the issue, you probably put the wrong size tires on them and it's screwed up the wheel sensors that gives out the reading (based on revolutions)

Still loving the HUD. I notice that the speedo and HUD, along with my after-market additional GPS are in-sync to around 60MPH, then the HUD, reads about 1-2MPH higher than the other two. Still happy with it though and VERY used to it now.
