I feel like I saw a forum a while back on USB audio vs iPod audio, and it detailed on how to use a USB drive for audio, but I can't find it now.

Does anyone know how to use a USB drive for the TSX?
I loaded my usb drive with like 7000 songs, but I plug it in and its not supported.

Do I need to create a specific "Music" folder?

Here you go. As far as my experience goes, check to make sure the type of music file you have are compatible (like MP3 or AAC). I haven't tried WAV, but I'm pretty sure it would work. Apple lossless doesn't work for sure. I don't know if there's a manual somewhere with this info.

EDIT: The 2011 TSX supports MP3, WMA, and AAC (only?) as stated by the Acura website.

No need to create a special folder. Check the formatting of your drive. Mine is formatted FAT32. Any folder you have in there, even if nested, will appear as a root folder in the Acura. Make sure it's not a U3 drive or anything like that.
The following is from the Acura web site: " The USB Audio Interface is used for direct connection to and control of some current digital audio players and other USB devices that contain MP3, WMA, or AAC music files. Some USB devices with security software and digital rights protected files may not work. Please see your dealer for details on compatibility."

First format your drive in FAT32, Windows only allows formatting until 32GB in Fat32, so if your drive is larger, use Linux or a partition manager to format it Fat32.

Second, when you load the files, the files get sorted in the order its written, so you need to use a program called "foldersort.zip" and use that to resort all the files / folders in alphabetical order. Otherwise you will have this really weird random file ordering. It is due to NTFS and FAT32 in how they record files.

The TSX (even my 2009) will play MP3, AAC and WMA. I prefer AAC or MP3 format.

Any generic .mp3 and .wma would be played ok. As others said, FAT32 as format, not NTFS.
I love this feature most, in fact, I haven't used the CD slot once sine owning the TSX.

Ok, I guess my problem is the formating. it's a 256g flash drive, I'm guessing its not formated as FAT32

Hey guys, my TSX base model doesn't have the USB port, but only the AUX (iPod) jack in there.. is there any way I can still play USB.. and if so.. which cable would I need to convert/adapt?

According to the service manual, the usb port is linked to a module that is somewhere under the center console. I suspect that this module interfaces with the radio. The base model in Canada has a different radio than the canadian premium model (no XM) so I am not sure that a direct retrofit would be easily feasible.

A 256GB flash drive? Wasn't even aware they were available in this capacity. I did a quick search on NewEgg and I did find one for $722. If you have one of these that's pretty awesome.

I think your problem may be one of the following:

1. Your flash drive has some type of security or backup function/software that is incompatible. A format of the drive may or may not be able to fix this issue. I know one Sandisk USB stick I bought had hard coded security I could not remove.

2. Your device is actually a portable hard drive. Ie not a USB flash stick but an actual laptop hard drive in a mini case or SSD drive. I believe these devices can require more power than the TSX can provide. (not 100% sure about this)

Edit: Oh BTW, prepare to be disappointed and fustrated using the TSX's amazing audio interface while trying to navigate 7000 songs. I had such aspirations once to place my entire music collection in my car. I have gone down to about 1000 songs and I am thinking about deleting more. After a while you realize your wasting to much time scrolling...waiting...scrolling..waiting though songs you never listen to anyway.

Etzero, what if you organized your sonhs by folder? Would make it easier to navigate but i agree, the interface is less than perfect!

i think if it says "not supported", the car doesn't support that particular flash drive. out of 3 that i used, only 2 were supported.

The beauty of it is it also takes the SD or microSD card if using along with USB reader.
I usually load up music files into the 2GB SD card, let it play from first to last song, if getting bored then remove them (songs) and reload others.

Oh I do use folders. But since the TSX reads all folders as flat (no sub folders) the list of folders can be huge. The issue is magnified by the lag when scrolling though folders. At least in my car it takes 2-3 seconds to update the folder names if scrolling fast. So it ends up:

Starting at A and needing to get to artist that starts with R.
Scroll Scroll Scroll forever till you guess you have reached R.
Wait for the folders to update to realize you are only at K.
Scroll Scroll Scroll
Wait for folders to update to realize you passed R and at T now.
Scroll...wait..Scroll...wait... to finally find artists that start with R.
and god forbid you go down into the final Audio menu and shut off your car. Once you go back to the folder list, it starts at "A" again.

Don't get me wrong I like my TSX. Just wish they had put more thought into the USB and Ipod interface. I guess I am spoiled after having an aftermarket stereo in my last car.

I actually bought it offf ebay for 25 bucks. It's a knock off from china but it contained 256gs so that's all I wanted!

That's just a charger; it doesn't have any connection between the USB device and the audio system.

Anybody have a copy of that foldersort program that they can send me? I used to have it, but I've been renderred (sp?) homeless between then and now and lost pretty much everything. There's another program on sourceforge now called foldersort, but it's not the same one, it only sorts by size.

(Which seems pretty useless to me, but then, I'm not a hard disk administrator, I'm just a person who has to watch all kinds of programs search or process through an entire disk with no idea of when they will finish, because the disk isn't sorted and the proggy is processing in directory order. )

The reason the file order is messed up is because of the way Windows moves files. Grab an alphabetical list of files and move them to a USB drive, and expand the details to see how it's moving them - it will randomly split the files at some points so it will look something like this (C-Z files followed by A-B).

Now, you've got a choice here... You can do nothing and that way your newest songs are always at the bottom of your list. For some people that's great. For others, we want a completely alphabetical list. How do you accomplish this? Simply put all your MP3s in a folder and move the FOLDER in it's entirety. Every time, you will have a perfect alphabetical list.

So, in essence, I have a folder on my computer called MDX. I put all my songs in there. Sometimes I'm OK throwing one new song on the USB drive, so I'll do just that and it's easy to find at the bottom of the list. When I want to clean things up, I quick format my USB drive and drag the MDX folder from my computer to the USB. Problem solved.

The max quality is 192 I had some songs at 256 and it said unsupported.

All of mine are 320. A limitation of the system is the MP3 codec used - it must be LAME. AAC codec will show as unsupported regardless of the bitrate.

Take the same unsupported file and resave it using LAME encoder and it will play. Took me a few beats to figure this one out myself.

I appreciate you telling me, as I recently bought a 2010 TSX. Most of my music is FLAC/Lossless. It's an easy fix, but a PITA. Perhaps its time to consider changing my system (I currently have the factory). What kind of system do you have K4 Me and msharifi?
