Need to clean EGR ports - anyone know how?

Got a check engine light again on the 3.2TL. 'Insufficient EGR flow'. Last time I took it to the dealer and had it cleaned under the emissions warranty. However the car is at 170k miles now, so I'll need to do it myself.

Does anyone here know how. I'm looking for a guide of some sort.

Download the combined 2.5 and 3.2 TL manual. I looked quickly and intake manifold may have to be removed to clean ports to each cylinder. EGR valve and EG supply pipe appear accessible.

good luck

its easy- there is only 1 egr port in the manifold to clean out- same as they did last time, You dont clean the valve or pipe- its the internal port that exhaust gas passes thru into the intake.
Here is the DIY- just omit the part about installing the special spacer or changing the studs
You will need new intake gaskets

also read gen2 thread DIY on Seafoam and do it

What manual and where? I could really use a 3.2 TL one right now.

Thanks

I don't think you have enough posts to use the PM system yet, and it's not hosted anywhere.

Is there a DIY for cleaning the EGR valve on a 98 3.2 TL? My friend got a code for the EGR valve and before replacing we want to try and clean it.

you might want to check with corporate to see if your car entitles for the emission extended warranty. I cleaned and changed the egr valve at the dealership for $0 with free car wash

PM your email address to me and I'll forward the EGR information I have. It is modest and does not provide detailed guidance for the specific job of EGR removal and EGR passage cleaning. It covers intake manifold system which appears necessary to access the EGR and EGR tube into intake manifold.

The referenced link provides detailed guidance on intake manifold removal and you can see the EGR and EGR tube clearly in one of the pics.

good luck

My wife's 3.2TL just popped up with the same code. The dealer wants $450 to clean out the EGR port which isn't going to happen. If I tackle this myself, will the CEL clear itself or do I need to reset the ECU? Thanks!

It will clear itself after the system EGR test is complete. Not sure how long this might take. You can reset ECU by pulling BackUp fuse (7.5A) for 20 secs. You will lose radio pre-sets.

good luck
